Cranial Sacral Massage?

I have had horrible migraines for over 25 years, and lately they have been occurring even more often. I'm on twice daily preventive medication (prescription and herbal), but even with that I've only had two days in the last two weeks that have been migraine free. The migraines are usually less severe when I'm on the daily meds too, but lately they've been horrendous - throwing up, can't open my eyes because of light sensitivity, can't function. Tomorrow I'm going to get a cranial sacral massage from Massage Envy, and I wondered if anyone here had tried that before. A friend of mine is also having a rough time with migraines right now (maybe it's the weather), and she is trying acupuncture tonight. We're going to compare notes and see if either of us gets any relief. We're each trying each method for a month. Anyway, have any of you tried cranial sacral massage? I had never even heard of it until last week when I stumbled upon it on the Massage Envy website. Thanks for any input!

What can I do next?

I have never heard of this. Thank you for posting this question... Now I will have to do research! :) I normally end up in the shower on massage running hot water over my head until the headache subsides. *sigh* I have recently removed a lot of things from my diet.... beef is my biggest trigger. I have been migraine free for 4 weeks. Crossing my fingers!!!

Have you also tried chiropractic care? Ours did the cranial Sacral massage on our newborn (VERY rough delivery.) It worked great on him. He would just go limp and fall asleep. You could SEE the relief on his face........

A.,
I am not putting Massage envy down at all but I would make sure that therapist is certified Cranio sacral therapist. If you google Upledger institute and you can see the therapists in the Dallas area and how much they are certified. I can give you the names of 3 who are the highest certified and know exactly what they are doing. One is Doris Weiner .....

Another is Ken Piercy

They are both the absolute best and have MANY years experience. Cranio can help with migraines. Acupuncture too. But you also have to make sure they know their stuff. If you want a name of a Traditional Chinese Medicine doc let me know

My mother in law swears by it. My husband and I tried it and were not impressed. We found acupuncture to be more helpful for headaches!

I feel bad for you having migraines but steer clear of Massage Envy, I had a couple of therapist (only went twice) that do not know what they are doing & I walked out of there in worse pain, I had to go to my chiropractor to adjust me & she cringed when I told her why I was there to see her (after having pain for two days & could hardly move/walk straight) and mentioned I went to Massage Envy, she said she is surprised they were still open, sayng they were horrible. Massage Envy also uses gross lotion and slop it on you like you were a needing a bath in it....this was in Irving, I see you are in Mansfield though...but still I have horrible memories of that place. No matter what you tell them, they do their own routine and although I asked for a medium massage each time, they went deep & it was very uncomfortable and made me worse. My husband had acupuncture and it worked GREAT! Acupuncture I would stick with! I hope you do find one that knows how to help you.

I've had migraines since age 6 and tried everything! Cranial sacral massage is extremely effective when done correctly. I agree that it may benefit you more to see a chiropractor. They can do this and incorporate other therapies to better your overall function. I go twice a week, take 200mg Topamax daily, Baclofen 10mg twice a day, and I rarely need pain meds anymore. Food sensitivity may be something to consider also. For me, it's sugar.
I also have Botox above my eyes to be able to handle the light sensitivity. It makes a world of difference. I had it all over my scalp and neck, hoping for a cure but only had minimal results. I handle the migraine much better when I can't feel it in my forehead.
I wish the best for you!

I agree with many of the other posts. The most effective releif will come from a combination of diet changes, massage, acupuncture, and most importantly chiropractic care. At Spector Chiropractic, located at 121 and Coit, there is a chiropractor, massage therapist and an acupuncturist all in one clinic. Imagine the relief you will get from 3 different professionals working together to maximize your results! You should call ###-###-#### and go in for a consultation with Dr Spector...it's free and there is no obligation! Dr. Spector is trained in a chiropractic version of craniosacral.

I don't know about the massage, but you may want to try the Botox and changing your diet. I was told to keep a food and activity log. I found many triggers when I examined my life. For instance a change in sleep patterns or letting my blood sugar fall.

One think that really helped me was working with my diet. A Mediterranean type diet reduces inflamation and for me, migraines. This type of diet involves more good fats from nuts, unsaturated oils like olive oil, and advocado, whole grains, fruits, veggies and fish. Reduce your processed foods, sugar, and meat, especially red meat. I figure that it can't hurt and might help!
