Cranial Molding Cap Suggestions or Advice

My eight month old son is medically required (per his physician) to wear a cranial molding cap/helmet for plagiocephaly and torticollis beginning next week. He will be required to wear the cap/helmet for an extensive period of time and for a significant portion of the day. If others have had experience with cranial molding caps/helmets, I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, tips, or advice. Thank you in advance.

my nephew had one, it even had a cool design on it. The only problem now is he bangs his head alot, he was so used to having the protection on his head and head butting things. One positive thing about the helmet is it is exactly that a helmet, every toddler should come with one, it would prevent alot of late night wake ups to check if they are okay after a spill. He had it for 6 months, his head isn't perfect but if you didn't know to look you would never notice. Your insurance most likely will not cover the helmet or dr appts. Unless your dr says it is medicaly needed. other wise it is considered purley cosmetic. I also read somewhere you can get them over the counter for around $600 instead of the $1500-1800. You might want to check into that, I wish I rememberd where I saw that, I think in a magazine, maybe someone else read it too???
Good luck.

My nephew had the same thing. They told the parents that he would be in it for 1 years straight.23 hours a day.He could have it off for one hour a day to get a bath or whatever..I know that when they took it off they had to wipe it out with alcohol because they sweat alot under it.But anyhow he has had it for like eight months now and for the last couple months he only has worn it at night to prevent his head from going back to flat in back.So it has not been a bad experience for them at all.His head is not perfect and never will be but it is 100 times better then what it was.It was worth it..

Hello Kathy! My daughter is now 5 years old, but was diagnosed with torticollis at 4 months and started wearing a helmet for plagiocephaly at 7 months. I am here to answer any questions you might have. We used to plan her bath time around the hour she was to have the helmet off. When she was doing physical therapy we made that the hour she had it off. She never seemed to have too many issues and it almost seemed like she wanted it back on when it was off, believe it or not :) It almost becomes kind of a security blanket for them. You can email me directly at ____@____.com for any questions. Best of luck to you. I am the owner of a torticollis group on Yahoo if you're interested to join the group. There are many parents there who share ideas and stories. I look forward to hearing from you soon. I also have pictures I can share with you of Emily during the molding process for the helmet, while she was wearing it, etc.

Take care,

T. Schilling

Hi there,
My daughter is almost 12 months old and has worn a plagio helmet for the past 3 months to correct her flat spot. It is working well and she has tolerated it really well. I can't imagine sleeping with a helmet on my head all night, but she adjusted really quickly and it doesn't seem to bother her. We keep it off for one hour each evening to bathe her and do her neck stretching exercises (she has torticollis as well). I was skeptical that the helmet would do much, but we have been very pleased with the progress up to this point. Best of luck as you start this therapy!

My friend has her daughter in one now... it's pink and cute! Her daughter doesn't mind it at all! As the parent, she's mentioned a couple things. She said she doesn't want to be the "crazy mom" who's in the dr.'s office all the time. However, she noticed an allergic reaction. They think it might have been the alchoal she was using to clean it, she may have to switch to a different cleaner or rinse it after. Also, they will tell you how to reconise if the helmet needs to be "shaved" when as the baby's head is moving back, so that it fits again after the movement. When you notice those signs and it's still 10 days before your next appointment, get in sooner or it can irritate their little heads.

My point in all of this is just to say.. during the hour you have the cap off, pay attention to babies head! :)

So... basically that is the extent of my knowledge. At 8 months old your baby will do well with this and never remember. Your baby will be thankful to you for taking care of this before school age (and harder, more calsified bones at that age). It's harder on you than any of the babies.

I hope all goes well!
