Yes. If they increase in intensity, are so painful that you can't move or talk, or come regularly, it could be early labor. It is most likely the "warm up" that your body is doing getting ready for labor. I had contractions like that for over a month before my son was born. Your doctor probably gave you a list of when to call or come in- water breaking, bleeding, etc etc. Look that over. Cramp-like contractions in late pregnancy are totally normal, but you should always check with your doc or midwife if you are concerned.

It could be you need to drink more water. It could be your ligaments are stretching more (normal). It could be that you are over doing it a bit. It could be either Braxton Hicks starting or even the beginnings of true labor. **I have it be all four but at different times and being my first pregnancy, it was a bit hard to tell the difference especially early on and when it was a combination of things.

At 38 weeks, you are probably now seeing your doctor weekly so please consult him/her about it. In the mean time, sit down and rest with a glass of water. If the cramps continue, call you doctor rather than waiting for your next appointment.

Labor can come on anytime 2 weeks give or take around your due date so your time might come anytime now.
If they were Braxton Hicks contractions, walking usually relieves them instead of bringing them on, while true labor contractions will increase with walking.
Drink plenty of water before and after your walk - sometimes cramps are due to dehydration.
Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about it.

Sure. Cramps and contractions ("real" or Braxton Hicks) can be aggravated by certain activities. In addition, sometimes when you move, the baby is sort of rocked to sleep, so it could also be that the baby's weight is pressing on one area and causing muscle pressure, ligament strain, etc. When you stop, the baby can start moving again, and the pressures are better distributed. Try taking more and shorter walks, or stopping part way and sitting on a bench or a rock wall, whatever you can find. If you have to stop walking, it's not ideal but it's not awful either - you're almost there!
