Cows Milk - Marrero,LA
All moms out there i need the truth! How many of you waited until the age of one to start giving cows milk? My oldest son started drinking cows milk at 9 months!i just cant see keeping my babies on formula until one year old! I've been told that my kids progress very fast, my oldest son was walking a week before he turned 8 months and he had 8 teeth by the time he was six months, my youngest is progressing pretty much the same way! please give advice!

It's the fact that they can't fully digest the milk and could cause intolerance later. It has nothing to do with if they can walk or not.

Yeah, Denise is right. It has nothing to do with milestones or how many teeth they have, some kids can be lactose intolerant or allergic and introducing it too early can trigger it.

Both of my boys really don't drink cow's milk. It's really not necessary like once thought for calcium. Cow milk is for cows not humans. Formula gives them the extra calories and nutrients needed for their first year when they are growing quickly. After that they really slow down with the growing spurts and don't require it anymore since their diet consists of more solid foods.
My first son didn't walk until he was 17 months old and didn't cut his first tooth until 10 months old. I was fine with it since I enjoyed having a baby around. lol
My 2nd was different and began things alot earlier than his brother. In the long run it really doesn't matter they all get there when it's time for them to get there :)

The biggest issue is that cows milk is designed to support the growth of COWS who have VERY different nutritional needs than humans. It really has little to do with allergies - many formulas are milk based and a kid with a strong milk allergy will react to formula too. However, most pediatricians recommend human milk until age 2 due to the nutrients needed for the rapid brain development in the first 2 years. Formula is the next best thing. Both of my children are under 2 and neither will have cows milk until their second birthdays. Formula is expensive and a pain in the rear, but kids are expensive and you have to budget and plan for these things so that your child can have the nutrition he NEEDS.

The most important reason to wait until a year (which I did with both kids) is that if you start too early your children could get severely anemic. They get iron in their formula and don't in cow's milk. Please wait!

I started giving my son cows milk at 11 months if I remember right, but I didn't really have a good reason other then I was tired of paying so much for formula, he did fine. The reason for waiting until they are a year old is because starting them on milk too early can increase their chance of allergies I have heard and also it's hard for them to digest the cows milk protein and it doesn't have the nutrients that formula has. I have a 5 month old and definitely plan on waiting until she's a year old since she has a milk intolerance and has to drink soy formula. They say they usually grow out of these things but I won't know for sure until I try giving her milk. Just because your son is progressing fast, doesn't mean his stomach is ready for the milk yet! I would talk to his doctor to get more info.

I actually waited until 15/16 months before even introducing cow's milk in any form. But I had a preemie and was exclusively breast feeding and allergies run in my family. I myself have a severe milk allergy. It's all about the stomach and gut and how they mature. Some kids can handle it earlier and some not at all. Luckily my daughter had no problems with it and I'm very glad I waited.
