Couple of Drinks, Worried Because I Might Be Pregnant.

I have been off birth control for all most a month now and on Friday I took a prenancy test and it said negative. So on Saturday I went to a Derby party with friends and had a couple of drinks. Then on Sunday I noticed this strange feeling in my stomach area and it hasn't gone away. Other moms told me they knew when they got pregnant because they felt different. Now I'm worried, what if I am and I had those drinks this weekend. Will that hurt my baby if I am pregnant?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your reassurances. They really put my mind at ease. Unforunately, I'm not pregnant, I just started yesterday. I will continue to try this month to get pregnant and I'm cutting way back on drinking. If I have to have a drink it will be limited until I find out I am, then of course it will stop completely.

I do not believe a couple of drinks will harm the baby. Same thing happened with my first and she came out perfect.

I have been told that the mother and fetus do not actually share the same blood supply until like 4 -6 weeks after conception. There is no need to worry at all.

Don't worry over what you have already done. I seriously overindulged one evening and found out I was pregnant like a week later. My OB said not to worry, everything would be fine. My son is now 7 and perfectly healthy and very bright. He started in the gifted and talented program in his school this semester and is doing great.

Honestly, you should find out if you are pregnant first, then take your questions to an expert. The same thing happened to me where I had gone out with some friends for three weekends in a row and had a few drinks each time. I found out later that I was almost a couple months. Really entrust in a expert however to get an answer for that. My baby came out healthy.

If it wasn't too much, I wouldn't worry. I had done the same thing and talked to my OB and he said not to worry since it was only one or two. Although if you are still worried about it, instead of listening to us--Call your OB and ask. That's what they are there for! Good Luck and Congrats if you are!!

You'll be okay. Just think of all the moms out there who did much worse things throughout their pregnacy and knew they were pregnant. Most of those babies still turned out just fine. Take another test, you could just have a bug, but i hope for you that you are pregnant. But if you are trying to get pregnant, know you'll know what to watch out for. Good luck to you!

You can put your mind at ease D. O. I was pretty much in the same situation when I became pregnant with my first son in 1999. I asked my doctor and she said that it was okay, just as long as you don't indulge throughout your pregnancy. My son was born a very healthy, happy baby! So, don't worry. You were just going about living your normal life. Good luck to you on the hopeful pregnancy!

What a good mom (or perhaps, mom-to-be) you are to be so concerned. If you are pregnant, everything will be fine. So many moms out there have done the same thing you have, not realizing they are pregnant. Think about the time before people even knew about fetal alcohol syndrome. When my grandmother was pregnant, doctors used to tell women to drink red wine and beer while pregnant, telling them it would make the baby stronger. A couple of drinks won't hurt the baby. Repeated exposure to alcohol might. If you are pregnant, as long as you stop drinking now, I think everything will be fine.

I wouldn't worry about it. Fetal alcohal syndrome is from long term drinking exposure. If you are preganant the baby probably hasn't even attached to your uterus yet. I would imagine plenty of babies being conceived after a few drinks!!!

no, no! you have not hurt your baby, if there is one. :) keep in mind that in europe, pregnant women drink all through pregnancy and have healthy babies. just don't keep drinking, obviously, if you get a positive test. :)

NO! Don't worry yourself -just don't drink any more or smoke or any "bad" things you usually do. My doctor told me with both pregnancies that if she had a dollar for every woman who came in worried about having had drinks before finding out she was pregnant -she would have retired rich a long time ago! With my first pregnancy I had been on full weekend party mode for two weekends before I found out (and the weekend directly before I didn't just have a few drinks -I DRANK -and smoked a lot of cigarettes). With the second -the night before I took a positive test, my husband and I split 2 1/2 bottles of wine -and everything is fine. Like I said -the minute you find out, make sure you've stopped everything, but if you had a few drinks, it's not going to matter. Like most things this country is a bunch of puritanical freaks about alchohol and pregnancy. NO, it's not ok to drink in quantity while pregnant, but the Europeans have very healthy babies and see nothing wrong with having a few glasses of wine or beer every now and then. Before the 70s, most of our moms did too!

Don't worry about it. Before I found out I was pregnant I would drink a bottle of wine a week (usually) and when my husband and I would go out I would usually order a drink. Just don't drink anymore until you find out for sure if you are pregnant or not. That little bit of alcohol you had will not hurt the baby at all. In fact doctors say that it is ok to have a glass of wine on occassion when pregnant. Although I never did, I just cut it out entirely.

no, a couple of drinks won't hurt the baby. It's excessive drinking frequently throughout the pregnancy.

You will be fine, it doesn't sound like you got trashed or were doing anything harder than alcohol but I'd make sure you know if you are pregnant so you can act differently moving forward. It's good you are concerned but do NOT beat yourself up, I know plenty of people who found out they were pregnant shortly after New Years and their kids are just fine.

You should be fine. You said you only had a few drinks so its not like you got drunk. A lot of women have this happen cuz they just didnt know, same thing with foods and smoking. You didnt know. Dont get yourself too worried. Take another test or go to the doctors. When I found out i was pregnant I didnt know except I had been following an ovulation calander. I couldnt feel that I was pregnant. Everyones different.

No worries. I know many people that did much worse than have a couple of drinks before they knew they were pregnant and have happy, healthy children. I went out bar hopping with the girls on a Friday night myself and found out that Sunday that I was pregnant and I have a beautiful 2 year old daughter.

Dont worry! As long as you become aware that you are pregnant and stop the baby will be fine. I was really unaware I was pregnant with my first and I was a HEAVY drinker! When I found out I was scared too but the doctor even told me that the baby would be fine and she was and is!

No worries! If you were neg. on Friday and had the drinks on Sat, even if you got pregnant right away, the embryo wouldnt have been implanted at that time. Seriously, dont worry about it. I would find out though, the babies spinal cord is formed by 21 days so make sure your taking folic acid if your trying. It is very easy to be past this point and not even know. Best of luck!

You and your lil one will be fine. My sister had a friend who drank and smoked pot while pregnant, and the child is doing great she is 4yr. She had a full term birth. Sad part was she knew she was pregnant and did it anyways.

In the old days we didn't know we werent supposed to have a drink or two once in a while when we were pregnant. My children did NOT have alcohol fetal syndrome. And in fact are grown women with wonderfully healthy children of their own. Nor did it affect their more than normal IQ's. so.. no, i don't think that having a couple of drinks accidentally will affect anything especially right now. I suspect you won't have another until you know for sure that you are not pregnant. And yes AFS is a very bad thing for babies.

Hi D., Congrats if you are preggers, but don't worry. I went through the same thing and when I talked to my doctor she said it was fine, since I didn't drink excessively. Just check with your doctor when you confirm the pregancy and stop worrying, that may do more stress than the alcohol!!
Take Care

I wouldn't worry. That early won't be a problem. Take a pregnancy test to be sure. Then, if you are, mention that you drank before you knew you were pregnant to the OB and the OB will say, "That's fine. Just don't drink anymore" and your mind will be at ease.

P.S. I was the matron of honor at my sister's wedding when I was 8 months pregnant. At the champagne toast, I was fine with a couple of sips. (Turned out that the staff switched out my champagne for Sprite anyway.)

I would say don't worry about it. If you are and you are just a few weeks or so they will be alright. I actually got pretty much drunk the weekend before i found out that i was pregnant(had no idea that i might be) and my twin girls afe just fine. The dr will also tell you that a drink of wine or beer will not hurt you or the baby or in my case babies! Hope this make you feel more at ease and good luck!

Hey Girl,
Last year, in November my hubby and I had a few drink at the marine corps ball. I didn't know it but I was already preggo. I think I was only a few weeks, maybe a month along. I had no sickness just bigger boobs, so I thought I was just gaining weight. But anyways, almost a year later and my baby is healthy as can be. You just might want to go to the dct before having any more cocktails ;0)
Good Luck!!!

No, babies bounce back quite nicely. The night before I found out I was pregnant, I had had a half a bottle of Vodka. The nurse told me not to worry that he would be fine and he was a beautiful, healthy child at birth! The key is to stop drinking once you know. Good luck!

Sincerly,

S.
