I am looking at having new granite countertops put in my kitchen. However, i have heard that granite can let off radiation. I just wanted to seek some additional feedback on this issue. I would also like to find out more information on siltstone countertops. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

see if snopes has anything to say about the granite. I would be hesitant to ask a granite counter salesperson, just because their aim is to sell.

Radon is naturally found in the materials that are used to make granite, concrete, etc. They say that granite does emit some radon, but there are mixed reports about how dangerous it really it. It was suggested that if u have granite counter tops to make sure the area has good air flow. One report said that the amount radon granite emits is no greater than what's in normally in the air.

Hello B.,

I sell Kitchen and Bath's and a lot of granite tops. The "radiation" is so minimal it has never ever been an issue for any of our customers, our supplier purchases their granite from a source that tests for that. Silestone has a marketing ploy that they have antimicrobial in it. Any man made solid surface is non-porous meaning nothing can get in it. Both granite and solid surface material are heat resistant not heat proof so you still want a trivet on them, and if you're going to spend that much money why ruin it by placing a hot pot on it? If you have any more questions just email me.

Thanks

D.

I can't find the link to a great article I read about it. It was written by a Industrial Hygienist doing work with radiation. It pretty much revoked much of the claims regarding the risk of radiation exposure from granite. I have also done some radiation testing of soil, and concluded that bananas give off more!!!! I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Especially if you run an HVAC system and open your windows on occasion so that it doesn't build up (like radon in a poorly-ventilated basement).

Many people tend to use Travertine for flooring and kitchen counters but I prefer other sturdier material like marble or caesarstone as they are non porous and does not stain and are easy to clean as well. You can get more details on kitchen counter tops at http://www.omicrongranite.net online.

B.,
We considered granite, but went with Hanstone (a composite quartz brand) because of the more uniform color and the lack of maintainance (no sealing, risk of staining, etc.) I have heard that the two actually cost close to the same, but the added benefit of a composite I have learned recently is that it can be repaired/reseamed if you chip it or need to change or move a fixture. I am sure you will love either choice. Good luck!
