Could This Be "Walking Pnuemonia"?

I have been congested for weeks. I now have a very dry lingering cough that goes into FITS of coughing. Have you ever had walking pnuemonia? Could I have it? I probably should (and will) go and get checked but I'm curious what the symptoms are. Thanks!

Added: P.S. How do they determine if it IS walking pneumonia?

What can I do next?

I agree that you shoul dgo to the Dr - they'll be able to tell if you have pneumonia by doing a chest x-ray. I had pneumonia about 5 years ago and it was the sickest I have ever been in my life. Like others said, I had extreme fatigue, was sweating at night, I did have a 101 fever (which I didn't realize until I went to the Dr) - I would go to sleep at 8pm at night and get to work at 7am the next day and by 9am I could barely lift my arms up over my head (seroiusly). You should go to the Dr, if you don't you run the risk of it getting worse and with a bad case of pneumonia you could end up in the hospital. I was out of work for 2 weeks!

There's also the possibility it could be pertussis or whooping cough. It's not uncommon for adults to get it even if vaccinated as a child. They've found that the vaccination wears off over time and it's definitely out there. When you said you were having fits of coughing that is what made me think of it but since you said it's a dry cough I'm not so sure if that would still be a symptom. Definitely call your doctor either way. Pertussis is treatable but O. of the dangers is that you could pass it on to children who could get really sick.

If you have fluid/congestion in your lungs, it's pneumonia. Walking pneumonia will not always give you an elevated temperature. How bad can it be if you don't have a temperature, right? So you are tempted to keep trying to go about your daily routine (walking around like it's just a little cold). It can get very bad very quickly. Not that it is what you have, but Whooping Cough is making a come back (they are recommending a booster shot for people who have not had O. in a long while). I had a cough last year that would wake me up from sleep and leave me exhausted (and my ribs hurt) and it went on for almost 3 weeks. It was hard to catch my breath at times. I finally went to the Dr and it turned out it wasn't anything serious, but they gave me a prescription cough medicine with a little codine in it to finally get over it.

O. symptom is extreme fatigue. You might have a bad case of bronchitis or pneumonia. I usually get this once a year and it can take a month or more to get over. I would definitely go to the doctor and get it checked if you have been coughing that bad for several weeks.

You should go get checked. I had it and I coughed and coughed and coughed all the time I was so tired and weak it took several different antibiotics and they had to keep changing cough medicine, it took a while for me to get better it wasn't any fun. Symptoms I had were cough, sweating, I was weak and pale and I also felt like I was going to throw up a lot of the time. Good Luck I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Denise,
Walking pnuemonia can be viral or bacterial. Either O. can become very dangerous to your health if not treated. A simple chest x-ray will determine if you have it . A blood test would confirm if it is bacterial. You may just have bronchitis but you should go to a Dr. have them listen to your chest and if they think it may pnuemonia they will recc.the x-ray. Good luck.L.

I had walking pneumonia about 10 years ago. I coughed a lot and felt pain (not horrible, but noticable) when I exhaled in my chest. I was also VERY tired. I had a chest x ray done to determine it was pneumonia.

If it helps any, I have had a cold for almost 2 weeks, now. I had horrible sinus congestion, cough and headaches. I'm still coughing almost 2 weeks later and when I lay down or exert myself, I have a coughing fit. I'd still go get it checked out, but I've also heard from others that this virus likes to "hang around".........ugh.

Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Denise. Please go to your doctor ASAP!! I had two rounds of pnuemonia this winter and the cough is the worst! They use xrays to determine if you have pnuemonia walking or otherwise. They use antibiotics and inhalers to treat it. Advair was my salvation from the cough and weezing. pnuemonia is nothing to fool around with and can be very dangerous if not treated! Go see your doctor!! Best wishes.
