Could Son, Who Is Almost 5, Have Urinary Tract Infection?
Hi, Moms.
I need your help. For the past week or so, my son, who is almost 5, has been going potty alot. He says something is wrong with his "pee pee", because he feels like he has to go all the time.
This is unusual for him. Normally he holds it for a long time. But now his is going about every 10-15 minutes, mostly just a little coming out.
If it is a urinary tract infection (or even if not), I know he's miserable (I used to get them all the time).
I know it's much less common in boys. Any ideas about what to do (it's the weekend so I can't call the doctor), or what else may be causing this? I'm really worried.
Thanks in advance for your help.
So What Happened?™
Just a big THANK YOU to all the precious moms who responded with such great care and concern.
I did take my son to the pediatrician on Monday. He did not have a UTI. The doctor said this is just a phase that most little boys go through for a couple of reasons. (which corresponds to what some of the other moms said)
1.His bladder is getting bigger, but he wants to stay the same amount of time on the potty. So, I should ask him to sit a few seconds longer to try to push the last little bit out.
2.It may be out of boredom. He was out of summer preschool for 2 weeks, so maybe that was part of it.
He is doing better now. Seems to be holding it longer like he used to, especially when he is busy doing something or in school.
Again, I want to express my gratitude to you for all of your help. I think I will still get some of the chewable cranberry tablets for both he and I to use.

It sounds to me like you are right about the UTI. It is supposedly less common for boys/men. I would probably go to Carenow to get him some antibiotics today. If you can not do that have him drink lots of cranberry juice until you can get him in. I don't know if Tylenol would help the discomfort but you could try that too. Good luck.

Take him to one of those "open all the time" clinics. One or two doses of medicine will make the little guy feel o.k. No reason for him to suffer!!!

Definitely take him somewhere to get it checked. My son was born with urinary tract problems and we were told that UTI's in kids are pretty serious and need to be checked. In boys it is uncommon to have them. Take him to a Primacare if nothing else or a Cook's Minor ER.

My son went thru the same thing right about this same age. Took him to the Dr. and Dr. asked what kind of
food and drink he was having on a daily basis. We said
"Vitamins, Drink Boxes, Oatmeal, etc...". Everything we named off had Vitamin C. The Dr. said that our son was getting an overload on Vitamin C. He suggested we stop the vitamins, Drink Boxes, etc. for a while and see if this was causing the frequent bathroom brakes. We did as directed and it worked. We were able to add some of these things back to his diet after a period of time, but not all of the items.

It sounds like a UTI to me, but I'm not a doctor. My son has had 2 UTI's when he was much younger than your son, and he was miserable. I would say to take him to Acute Kids Urgent Care or another pediatric urgent care place. They get you in and out, and they specialize in kids. They may be able to get him started on an antibiotic (cath him if necessary), etc. I took my son there for one when he had his first one, and I didn't know what it was. They did cultures, etc and were very helpful. Good luck. After going there, I followed up with my family pediatrician to see if there was any other problems.

My 3 year old had similar symptoms and I thought it was a UTI. I took him to his pedi to get him tested and it turned out he didn't have one. She said it was just an irritation (the tip was red) and to use A+D clear ointment on it 3 times a day to alleviate it. She also said to switch to a milder soap, something like Dove for sensitive skin, for use at bath time.
We were lucky it wasn't a UTI. You should try to get him to his pedi first thing Monday morning if you can to rule it out.
By the way, I've been giving him one serving every day of Grape Cranberry juice (100%) every day to ward off an infection just in case. He loves it.
Good luck.

Try to give him lots of liquids, and if you can get him to drink cranberry or cranapple juice, that may help. Lyme disease can be passed to an unborn child, so Monday when you get him to the doctor, have him tested, just to be sure that that is not compromising his immunity leaving him open to an infection that he wouldn't normally get. As I am sure you know, it is better to know what you are fighting. Good luck.

You can get medical care on Saturday. UTI's in adults are not as serious as UTI's in children. I would take him in.
