Coughing at Night - Salt Lake City,UT

For the past couple of weeks, my daughter (2) has been coughing around the same time every night. Cough sounds dry, but she gags when she's done. Everytime I go in there she is asleep, so I gently move her to her back and the cough seems to stop. We've tried a pillow to prop her up, humidifier, and Vicks. It doesn't seem serious, but I'm not sure if I should take her in to see her Dr. Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

Does she have post-nasal drip? That can cause coughing too.... when someone is lying down, it gets stuck in the throat (hence gagging).... and you said she sleeps on her tummy... because you have to have her move to her back???

Or Asthma

Or allergies to dust etc.

Or... when she is sleeping... she is not swallowing her saliva... and it can build up in there (hence gagging), then trickle down the throat and make one cough. Especially a child.
This happened to my Son, when he was younger, like that age.
I actually sat there while he napped, to observe what was happening... and that is what was happening...

All the best,
Susan

I am going through the same thing with my 6yr son. It has been 4weeks of on and off.I took him to the dr on Monday, she thinks post nasal drip and presc, maybe mild asthma. I would have her checked out. After 2 weeks it could be affecting her sleep and 2 yr olds need their sleep. I wish you all the best. Please let me know what you find out.

Sounds like a winter cough to me. I would keep with the humidifier and proped up pillow, but would discontinue the vicks. Vicks has been found to constrict the air ways and make it harder to breath for some people. I would use saline nasal spray instead.

My baby does the exact same thing. They think it is reflux which she has had since birth. Limit food and drink before bed.

I have slight asthma and I seem to have a mile cough at times in the winter. I would get her started on probiotics and check with the doctor.

My daughter was the same when she was that age and she was diagnosed with allergies. We put her on 5mg Singluar chewable tablet and it works wonders for her cough, sneezes and runny nose. It is very expensive though, $130 a month but her insurance covers it. Good luck! I hate coughs!

I'd check with the Dr. My son did this about 2-3 hrs after going to bed... it was post nasal drip - allergies....

It could be asthma as nighttime cough is a symptom. It could also be the dry air in the house due to winder and heat. You may just call your pedi and ask if they want to see her or not.

reflux is what i think of. DS had it severe since birth, sounds just like him.

My daughter since birth would have that dry night time nagging cough. It would seem to linger after every cold she had. I used delsym since nothing else worked for her. If you go to her ped ask for singulair as it is a athsma/allergy med it helped my daughter last year but she seems to have outgrown it finally (at 4)
