Coughing

My 3 year old started a cough 2 days ago. It is very dry and seems only to get worse when laying down. I know that this is due to drainage from allergies, we have given her Zyrtec the passed 2 days. Her cough was so persistent at night that we took her to the ER...yes maybe a little over reacted. The doc. at ER said NOTHING is wrong. She might have a little virus causing the cough, but of course didn't reccommend any OTC for cough and said that the cough is healthy and it is not good to suppress. He prescribed her cough medicine with codene, just 2 doses of 1 teaspoon every 4 hours. She slept fine last night. Went to daycare today and daycare called saying cough is really bad and now she is complaining of stomach and throat hurting. No fever, good appetite, drinking great, playing, not asthmatic, lungs, sinuses, ears, everything good no other symptoms except the COUGH.
Any suggestions to soothe her cough while this virus runs it's course? Cool or warm vaporizer?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

Have you tried Dylsum(?) cough syrup or I use Robatussin(?)
when my daughter gets that kind of cough. She gets this cough at least 4 times a year. The doc says it's allergies and not much you can do but cough syrup or Benadryl for kids allergies. Let me know how she does and what you use in case i need something else. Good luck.

Both of my children suffer from allergies and this up and down weather temp is not helping. When mine get the dry cough the doctor says to give them claritin, mucinex for kids or any allergy meds along with robitussin DM to help break up the mucus and make it a productive cough. Warm tea with honey and lemon can also help with the sore throat from coughing. I think everyone is going through this in one way or another with this crazy weather.

Hello, My son and I are allergy sufferers and always get coughs that keep us up and can sound horrible during the day at school and work. I am a huge belever in Mucinex. If you get allergies you get the nasal drip and then you cough, even when the cough sounds dry if you use an expectorant it may loosen up the mucus and ease the cough. I do not give my son expectorant at night due to he is then up all night coughing more, during the day when the cough isn't so bad you can promote that mucus to come up. This seems to be the case in my house every time we suffer from allergies for a few days or a season...
Good luck.

If the cough syrup w/codeine isn't helping I wouldn't keep giving it to her. It can become addictive. There is also an herbal tea that is for coughs. I make this and add honey. It is soothing.

Hello,
I am a mother of 3 children and have been through almost everything from A to Z with my kids.
If her cough is sounding dry try using a humidifier in her room. Often times when we are medicating our children to get rid of congestion due to allergies the medication can actually cause irritation from overdrying of the airways. The humidifier will actually moisturize her airways which will in turn soothe the cough and irritation and will also help her cough out any congestion. There are good humidifier additives that can be purchased to put in the water to help soothe her airways. Vicks makes a good one and it should be able to be found where humidifiers are sold. Wal-Mart and other places like that carry it.
I'd continue to give her the Zyrtec because it is a good antihistamine, but the humidifier should definitely help.
I truly hope this helps you and your daughter.

OK,this is going to sound VERY VERY WEIRD but it does work. Someone in my house has had this crud since Christmas. Been to the dr. 5 times with various kids with it. The ONLY thing that has worked is this: put Vicks Vapor Rub (or store brand) thick on the bottom of the feet and put on socks. Leave it on overnight and / or all day. When it gets absorbed, re-apply.

I told you it was VERY VERY WEIRD but it does work. All of my kids have done this at one time or another since Christmas and it has worked on each of them. Good luck - we are still fighting the crud but at least we have found that this helps the nasty cough.

When my children have a bad cough, I use a cool mist vaporizer in the room they are in and put some Sol-U-Mel and Melaleuca oil in the water. This is great for disinfecting as well as soothing their breathing passages. I have also put a bit of Melaleuca oil below their noses or rub on their necks and it seems to help wonderfully. If you are interested in any of these products, just let me know and I can send you a link to check these out.
Good Luck!

This happens to me almost every year. I've been to several different doctors over the years and have never been prescribed anything that helps. I pretty much have to suffer. The one thing that always helps somewhat is sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower going. You know, for the steam. Then when I lay down, I try and keep myself propped up a bit. Its the laying down flat that always triggers it for me. So, yes, you may have to ride it out. These "coughing spells", as I call them, usually run the course in a week or two. Like your daughter, there are no other symptoms that that NAGGING COUGH!!!
The bad news is, this started with me at about the age of 12? 13?, I'm 37 now. I fully believe that it is some sort of allergen that makes it flare up.

I would try using some Pediacare for infants and toddlers and using a little Vapor Rub on her chest to soothe her throat at night.I would also recommend you taking her to her Pediatrician also to make sure nothing is really seriously wrong.

Hi Lindsi~
My 3 year old is going through almost the exact same thing. She takes singulair because zyrtec didn't work for her, and right now she has a horrible cough that wakes her and me up in the middle of the night. The doctor also told us it's just allergies. We are trying delsym to help with the coughing. I may try the vicks on the feet thing too - whatever works! The codine in her medicine may be causing your daughter's upset stomach ---I know it helps them sleep well, but I've also heard it can cause an upset tummy. Hope she feels better soon!

Vick's on the feet does infact work. Buy the adult kind and put in all on her feet (very heavy) and then put socks on her. And in about 5 mins it will take effect. My mom was sick in December and was coughing and so congested that she did it and she told me it really helped. I have been doing this for about 1 year on my son since other Mom's on her told me about it (my son is 2 now). The vicks absorbes into the pours of the feet. Also you can put it on her chest and then put a humidifer on all of these combinded helps. Also you can give her Karo Syrup and it coats the throat and helps with coughing. Hope this helps.

My 6 month old sounds almost exactly like your 3 year old. She's absolutely fine except for a REALLY bad cough. We went to the doctor today for shots and our doctor told us she had a sinus infection. You might check with your doc and see what she says. GOOD LUCK!!

We all just had this, bad cough with mucus, then it turned into runny/stopped up nose, my kiddos dr said it was allergies, but to my knowledge allergies are not contagious LOL, no we all ended up with it one at a time, even my sister, we still got it two weeks later (not all of us just the baby and my sister), my sister got the vomiting and fever though (we didnt have that), i think its a virus or something that is going around, everyone in our small town has this. I used zicam on myself, my husband and my oldest son who is 3 1/2, it is a homepathic cold med that you can get at walmart for $9, we use the one with the "qtip" and you put the med in your nose. clears it up fast, the quicker you use it (at the first sign of you getting it) the faster the med works and gets you better. It says to use it once every 4 hours but i did it on me 3x day and my son 2x day. Good Luck, hope your baby gets better soon!!
