My question is... is it safe to do two different kinds of cough medicine? What I mean by that is can I take Delsym at night and then mucinex during the day?

What can I do next?

I don't use cough medicines. I keep a vaporizer in their room when they are sick and I give them a big teaspoon of honey before they go to bed. I don't hear a peep out of them the rest of the night. I also give them Tylenol or Motrin for the aches and pains. I really don't think over the counter medications really help much. Good luck.

Depends on how long they last. Delsym lasts 12 hours so you cannot take anything else for that time.
I used Robitussin DM for night, it has both the Mucinex expectorant (guaifensin) and the dextramothoraphine.
The second is what makes me sleep so I only take it at night.
When I had bronchitis last year, the Dr said if you can, let the cough go without meds during the day, your body is trying to get out junk and that it is better during the day to let it run it's course.
Mucinex is good stuff though to break up the congestion in your chest, it too lasts 12 hours so you have to be careful not to double dose yourself. It actually helps me at night the best. Some Mucinex products have both a suppresent and a expectorant in them too.
Dextramothoraphine helps control the cough while the Mucinex type products help produce productive coughs that clear out your chest.

That is fine. Delsym is to stop the coughing, Mucinex loosens and helps get rid of the mucous. So, at night you don't want to cough and stay up, during the day get rid of the phlem.

There are some cough medicines which contain both active ingredients. Kinda counter-productive, but they are ok together.

Ask your pharmacist, though if you are taking other medicines.

Hi S. - Delsym contains the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. Mucinex contains guaifenesin which is an expectorant or mucus thinner.

It's okay to take them both at the same time, just watch the dosages. Delsym doesnt contain guaifenesin but some of the Robitussin formulas do.

You can get Mucinex in 600mg tablets and take 1-2 of them twice a day. Max adult dosage for guaifenesin is 1200mg twice daily but use only as much as you need to relieve your symptoms.

I don't know for sure because I don't do the cough medicines (don't usually have a problem with coughing), but I do know that this is a question that your pharmacist will easily and quickly be able to answer. If you don't have a pharmacist, just call any pharmacy in the phone book and ask to talk to the pharmacist. You'll probably have your answer within minutes, and you'll be sure that it's right because they are trained to know the answer to those kind of questions. If he doesn't know, he'll tell you that. Good luck!
