Cough?! - Richmond,VA

My 18 month old son woke up yesterday with a little cough. No fever, chest/back sound clear, no runny nose... just this awful little wet-ish cough. It sounds like postnasal drip. Around 7PM I gave him some Benadryl to help dry it up enough so he can sleep. It's the 24 hour kind, so I can't give him anymore until this evening... but he woke up coughing again. I've been keeping him inside since the air quailty is at a severe high pollen level and the air quality is moderate (meaning, keep your elderly and babies inside). I dusted last night while he was sleeping and vacuumed, so I don't think it's indoor allergens. How long does a cough like this go on with no fever before going to the doctor? He's been super fussy, I'm wondering if his throat hurts too. No one else is sick. Suggestions?

What can I do next?

He could have an ear infection and have post nasal drip which can cause and ear infection. I would also get an air purifier for his bedroom. I spent about 35 bucks on one for my son and it does help. When you vacuum and dust it does stir up a lot of dust in the air. If you have a air purifier then it will get rid of the allergens in the air. Have you recently gotten any new pets? I would say more than a day,at his age take him to the doctor.

My girls suffer from severe allergies. Usually during the start of a new season is when we get issues. Never a fever but just this nasty cough. One of my twins was hospitalized with pneumonia so just be careful that it doesn't turn into bronchitis or pneumonia.
I can't remember the age at which you can begin to give your kids honey-is it two? Anyways mine are 8 but I buy "local" honey. Not the kind you buy in the grocery store it has to be "local" honey in order for it to help with the allergies. I give 1 tsp. per day and I can say that it seems like it really does help. They also have these pollen pellets of honey. It doesn't taste to great in my opinion but it supposedly works even better. I will usually add it into a yogurt.
The whole idea about the local honey is that the local bee nursey collects the pollen from the locally grown stuff in your area which is what is giving you the issues with your allergies. It's a counter effect thing and I have seen an improvement with my girls when giving them the honey but its by no means a cure but it does "help". One of the girls I work with said that she does the pollen pellets and can't even remember the last time she had a bought with her allergies. I myself never really had a hard time with it but I also do the pellets as well so maybe in itself they DO work but I'm not religious about it with me as much as my children.

No fever. Likely no infection. My son's been doing the same for a couple weeks now. When I had to take my daughter in to the Dr's for a throat infection, I decided I'd have the Dr just take a quick look at his ears, nose, & throat. Nada. Nothin. He's fine. He's still coughing on occasion. It's just sinus drainage. I know we've had a high pressure system hovering our area that has been making my whole house stuffy.

A llittle ear infection can cause a cough-better have him checked out-in the meantime-1/2 tsp of Delsym will help.

Oh R.!! i'm sorry!!

If Roman didn't start coughing until a little while AFTER you vacuumed and dusted (how great that he can sleep through your cleaning!! YAHOO!!) then it could be allergies...

He's also 18 months and is probably breaking in those 2 year molars....especially if he's been fussy!!

Give him lots of loving!!!

24 hour Benadryl? Guess I always reach for the children's liquid at the store and am oblivious to the rest.

Anyway, if Benadryl doesn't make a difference than it probably is not allergies. Typically when the combination of Claritin and Benadryl fail to improve my daughters (who are older) I take them in because it obviously is not allergies. I know a cough can be indicative of pneumonnia so you don't want to wait too long. Plus if he has been super fussy I wouldn't wait much longer.

I hope he feels better soon.

With the fussiness and drainage, it sounds like teeth. If it gets worse, or doesn't go away after a few days, then take him to the doctor. When my daughter was four, she go pneumonia. Her main symptom was a mild headache, but I chalked that up to too much spinning on the tire swing at preschool. She had an interminant, nasty cough, nothing continuous, and it didn't sound different from her other coughs to me, but it alarmed the nurse when I took her to the Dr. Yup, even I could see the infection on her X-rays.

My allergies get a lot worse when we vacuum and dust because we're raising dust and pollen. Especially when the pollen counts are so ridiculous. I try to wet things down instead of raising dust. Indoor allergens are just as bad, especially if your kids are outside at any point or you dry your clothes outside and then drag all of that gunk back inside.

I've never heard of 24 hour Benedryl, much less for babies. Curious. Is it Rx?
