Cough

Maybe he has post (sp?) nasal drip. I always give my son saline by the nose every time I change his diaper and this helps clear his nasal passages and throat. Maybe you can check an ENT or allergist. Good luck!

Hi K.. My name is S.. I work at the daycare center that my 11 month old daughter attends. She started having a cough starting back in August. I have had her seen by many different doctors and one thought it was reflux, one said it was an upper respiratory infection and she would get rid of it herself and another said it was a cold that she just keeps catching and trying to get rid of but as soon as she tries to get rid of it she catches it again from someone else at daycare. It's definately a stressful issue but she has kind of overcome it. I'm not sure if your son has had any ear infections but my daughter suffers from them alot! I know this response wasn't exactly a help but I just wanted to let you know you're not alone in this struggle. I still don't know why she coughs so much and apparently neither do the doctors. Possibly teething? Ear infections? Not sure but i'll be in touch if they figure anything out for her, maybe it will help you, too. Good luck!

Yes! My 1 1/2yr. old daughter has a cough that comes and goes! What I do so she can have a good night sleep, I put on the vicks vaporizer and I also rub a little vicks on her chest & back. MY daughter sleeps through the night and doesn't cough either. I don't know if you have tried this yet, if you haven't try it and let me know. Take care and I hope your baby gets well soon.

My son, 15 months old, had the SAME thing. Sometimes he'd cough so hard he would throw up. I finally went to Whole Foods & talked to the Whole Body expert, who recommended a homeopathic formula (dispensed in little tablets) that cured his cough in two days!! It was amazing. Also, my pharmacist in Weston dispenses these tablets. If you live near Weston, the place is called Weston Pharmacy, right off 75 N, on Indian Trace.
I swear by them. They are perfectly safe.
These homeopathic tablets also helped with teething, and with swelling when he was recently injured.

My son is going to be 5 and he has had a cough since he is 15 months. The doctors thought it originated in his sinuses since they seem to get infected as well. The problem is that he has absolutely no known allergies. I am going to my fifth ENT with him next week. If I get any answers, I will definitely let you know.

Hi K.. My name is Marian. My son had asthma as a young child. He is 8 now and has outgrown it. He had pneumonia at 6 months etc. The cough always came when he was having difficulty breathing. It wasn't a huge cough - just an annoying thing. It seems to me that your son could be having the same issue or has allergies w/a post nasal drip. That makes you cough as well. My son did REALLY well using Singular (sp). Clariton didn't do much for either of my kids. Maybe a different Pulmanologist... Maybe his adnoids - I can't spell any of this either!!

Probably didn't help much but just know that you are not alone and I'm sure a doctor will figure it out. Just don't give up!

It sounds like allergies. My son has had this cough since he was an infant, and he is now 16 years old. Although he has been tested for allergies, we have never been able to pinpoint what he's allergic to, but it seems to be seasonal. As a toddler we also had him on a nebulizer and albuterol. Now he takes Zyrtec when he's having issues (especially when he gets a cold) and has an albuterol inhaler that he only uses for when he gets 'sports induced' asthma. (He's in high school basketball, and this happens only when they've had a very strenuous workout.) Also, he likes to sleep with the cool air mist humidifier when he has colds. Since your little one is so young, be sure to keep asking questions and get 2nd opinions from other doctors.

Hey Kim, it has to be allergies, my daughter Christin has been doing that " COUGH" all the time, she is on Claritin and all the other medicines. She is 16 years old now and still goes around with the cough , we took her to an eyes nose mouth doctor and he says that the allergy usually goes in the eyes or nose and thats why they cough, so he can have an allergy to anything like dust pollen smoke anything. There is nothing really we can do about it, i got a clean air effects in the house and i wash her sheets and blankets and whatever she has on her beds like stuffed animals they are great for collecting dust and dander from animals and stuff. It drove me crazy because she would cough all night long i don't know how she got any sleep, but the medicines seemed to help alot it took a long time to kick in though, you have always give them the medicine daily I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask

Hi K.. My name is T.. I think this was a blessing that I saw your blog this morning. I was very concerned today when I walked in my daughters classroom and heard all this coughing going around. I would love to talk to you and tell you what works for my family. I plan on speaking to the parents in my daughters class this week. My daughter use to catch all these colds from school. An old country remedy:
Rub his feet with Vick's Vaporub over his entire soles before he goes to sleep.

Also, check with an allergist. maybe he is allergic to something in the house or his room. Even the detergents and/or softeners could cause allergies.

What the Dr. said about his ears, no infection? What about sinus? Sometimes I have a lot of cough and is cause because of frontal sinus.
Anyway, if youlive near the ocean , my grandmother always took us to the sea , because she said it will clera our respiratory sistem, it work with us.I hope it work for you.

My advice....we lived this life for months and months too...get him to an allergist. Let them test him to see if it's food or EA or both.

If you find the answer let me know. I've had that cough for 13 years and I've yet to find a doctor willing to take anymore time than writing a decongestant or cough syrup...which never works.

Could your air conditioning vents or heater vents need cleaning? This seems to be a big issue at our house. Everybody seems to breath easier after it is done at our place. Hope this helps.

I am a 41 year old mom with 4 and 2 year old girls. My 4 year old is in preschool and comes home w/all the germs. She had a cronic cough for so long. She was at at the doctor's office 3x in one month. My ped. suggested a special cover for there bedding and pillow cases for dust mites. I clean there bedding all the time, including all stuffed animals. But, the doctor said they will still get in there bedding. YUCK!! I vacuum a lot too!! This seemed to help a lot. I also bought a "GERMINATOR" device kind of like the expensive "ION" machine. But not at all expensive at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Good luck!! Hope he feels better soon!! A. P.

I had the same situation with my daughter now 24 months. She was constantly sick and getting respiratory medication. I couldn't sleep at night with fear. All day long she was tired and crampy. One day I changed doctor-went to a different pediatrician and this new doctor said her chest was clear, blood tests were OK so he asked me to take out all milk/lactose/ eggs...etc from her diet. From that moment on she has never received respiratory therapy again. I'm not saying yuors have the same problem (intolerance to lactose and animal proteins) but you can check with your doctor and try to change his diet...It worked for me!

Trying putting a couple of pillows under his mattress to bring it up. I do that with my daughter if she has a cold or her allergies are acting up.

My daughter also wasn't able to digest whole milk. Once I took her off of it, her ear infections and coughs disappeared.

My brothers and sisters had a lot of allergies. Maybe you should see a allergist. They can test him to see what he is sensitive to. He may have either a food allergy or may be allergic to the detergent you use on his clothes.

Try removing dairy from the diet.
If that doesn't work, try gluten.
Also; I never found any pediatrician as useful as a Chinese Herbalist for figuring out what is wrong and finding and inexpensice natural way to fix it. We use a delicious tasting, Chinese Herbal cough medicine that costs $8 for a big bottle and our coughs are always gone in days!

Has your son been to an allergist. I know with the colds my son coughs a lot and since this is a bad time of year his cough comes and goes. I usually put vicks baby rub on his chest and back at night and I use the vicks plug ins. Personally sometimes I use a vaporizer but never a humidifer (I find it makes you cough more). Good luck

Have you considered allergies? I am not a doctor but my kids and I suffer from allergies and coughing could be an indication of a reaction to something. We eliminated all the rugs, carpeting, etc. and placed air purifiers in their rooms. It has helped a lot. You may also want to consult with an allergist.

I was like your son at that age. I am 55 now and still have that cough once in a while. The cough that your son has, if everything is alright with his lungs, could be an allergic form of cough like it was for me. Sadly I did not discover it until I was 20, when I went to a farm full of sheeps and I started to cough. I was allergic to wool. Most of the materials that you use on bed in winter is wool.I was allergic to wool. I went to an allergist and I discovered that besides wool, I was allergic to cat's hair, house dust(that includes curtains and rugs)and powder cement. All of those things made me cough at night if I had been on conctact with them. There is no medicine that can cure that, not even allergy medicines, did not worked for me.There is only one thing that my mother did, that would ease the coughing and that was: She took a table lamp, removed the shade and she had this cotton cloth that she would fold in fourhts, she placed them over the light bulb of the lamp,waited for it to get hot, tried with her hand to see it was not to hot to burn me, and placed that cotton cloth hot over my bare chest before going to sleep at bed time. This used to work and I stopped coughing most of the night. You should take your son for an allergy test to determine what's in his room that is giving him the cough. Good luck! A.

Have you considered asthma? My daughter doesn't seem to have asthma normally, but whenever she gets sick, it triggers something and she ends up with a nasty cough for weeks. One time it got so bad I went to the doctor for prescription cough medicine. He gave her asthma medication instead and had her stay on it for 10 days. That worked. So now whenever she gets sick to the point her cough doesn't go away, I put her on asthma medication and it clears up her problems. You may also want to make sure you have a allergen filter for your A/C unit and may want to consider investing in an air purifier unit for his room. Good luck

My son has a productive cough from Aug to May every year, this is his 4th year. He has been tested for all allergens 3 times..everything is negative. He is on singulair, veramyst, zyrtec and pulmicort once a day. His pulmonologist also says his lungs are clear. He has had 4 sinusites in the past 6 months. He has been fine for a month w/ only slight cough. He has been tested for cystic fibrosis as well. It could be reflux in your son's case, not mine b/c he doesn't cough in the summer. I have never been told to give cough suppressant so don't. I have been to 2 ENT's. 2 allergists and 1 pulmonologist. I have asked repeatedly if I should ignore the cough. I've been told no if it interfers with his quality of life and if it gets complicated (ear infections in your case, sinusitus in ours). I hope my experience helps a little but know you may never know why he does that and we just have to hope he outgrows it w/out developing asthma or further complications. Good luck!

My recommendation is to take him to a specialist -- ENT or respiratory. I have suffered from allergies and asthma and find that the general physicians have not been as helpful as a specialist, other than prescribing drugs.

give the child honey when the cough is coming on. You can give honey as often as you need too. Then at night get vicks and rub his feet with vicks and put socks on him. It has helped my Grand daughter.

You might try taking him to an allergist. My daughter had the same thing last year and she was diagnosed with allergies. Many times they can flare at night or while laying down post nasal drip from allergies can cause coughing. My husband and I both have asthma brought on by allergies and out symptoms (coughing) are worst at night. If we see a Dr., our lungs sound clear, but for some reason we both have issues at night (esp. if we haven't taken our medication).

I use to put Vicks on my babies chest and back when they had these coughs. There is a pink medicine which you can put on his chest called neumotizine, I do not know if they still sell it, but it is great!
I suggest you to take him to an allergist, this could help a lot. Wish you luck.
