Hi ladies. I'm actually thinking ahead today, which doesn't happen very often! I am interested in renting a cabin or cottage for a week next summer for a little vacation with some family members. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like it to be near the water, Lake Michigan, or any other smaller lake. I remember when we used to rent a cottage when I was younger my parents would have to reserve it a year to six months in advance, so I wanted to start looking now. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

Hi,

Two web-sites to check out are www.vrbo.com and www.vacationrentals.com. We just rented a cottage this summer in the Traverse City area on a smaller lake called Island Lake. It was quiet and beautiful. There are tons of cottages on these websites. I reserved ours in January sometime and there were plenty of weeks available in summer. Good luck, and hope it's fun!

If you go to craigslist.org (Michigan/Kalamazoo or Michigan/Northern) and then look under housing/rentals, you can find some cottages that are for rent. It will give you a pretty good description and contact info.

J. T,
My in-laws have a cottage north of Holland, MI that they rent for one or two weeks each summer. It's part of the Port Sheldon Beach Association which gives them access to Lake Michigan, Pigeon Lake, 2 playgrounds and tennis courts. The cottage is fully furnished and provides a washer/dryer, TV, garage, and three bedrooms. My in-laws charge around $850 or so per week - they can tell you the exact amount. If you'd like to talk to them, just let me know!
Thanks, L.

We had good luck finding a cottage to rent in norther Michigan using the Vacation Rentals By Owner website http://www.vrbo.com/ You can search by state and then city/area within that state. Most of the listings have pictures and you can view an availability calendar online as well.

Personally we loved the cottage that we rented in Sutton's Bay Michigan. Not on Lake Michigan exactly - Sutton's bay is part of Grand Traverse Bay, but it's super close to Traverse City, Northport, Leeland, and Glen Arbor so it made for a lot of fun day trips and they had a great beach for when we felt like staying nearby.

Good luck to you!

There are some cottages near Mackinac city right on the water called The Beachhouse. I will be honest they are very "authentic" of an old up north cottage. There are about 20 cottages and the owners do a great job of taking care of whatever you need. They have a website you can find by searching for the beachhouse and mackinac. Also if you go farther north past the bridge there is a town called Curtis that I know of a family that has rented for their family reunion for the past 15 years. Good Luck with your search.
