Corporal Punishment? - Downers Grove,IL

Just curious b/c I'm fairly new to this area of the country, and my son is not yet in public school. Do the public schools in IL do spankings, or paddlings, or whatever it's called up here as a form of discipline? Where I was raised, the very deep South, it is still a very common practice, and I wondered if it is done here. I sincerely hope this doesn't spark any sort of debate, and I'm not going to post my opinion about it here. I'm just wondering if it is done. Thanks.

What can I do next?

When my son who is twenty four in Feb. started school they had corporal punishment-seldom but their handbook stated they could do it. We were told to write a letter saying we didn't want them to do it to discipline our children. I have worked in schools for many years and only saw something once when a teacher was escorting a student to the office and pulled him by the ear. You can ask once he starts school. It is seldom practised but may be part of the handbooks. Too many lawsuits if someone was hurt.

Hello Mrs. T.,

No No No!!!!!! There is absolutely no spanking or padding or none of that here in IL. My kids attend a public school and that has never ever happen at there school. We the parents are really not even allowed to hit not unless we do it at home in close doors. Don’t worry about that its not even done in private schools. I think this is an old habit that happened years ago right? I've lived in Chicago all of my life and I have never heard of anything like this ever happening.

My kids go to public school and I did as well. I have noever had any incident where a teacher hit a student. Of course, I would always hear the stories about someone getting the ruler by the nun-and was then very glad to not go to Catholic school. : ) There was a story in the paper the other day about some coach hitting the players but other than that, I don't think so.

I have never heard of that in a public school around here. But every school district should have a written discipline/behavior policy that will tell you what is expected of students, teachers, and administration.

Actually there was just an article in the Chicago Tribune stating that some of the Chicago Public Schools paddled children. It was an investigative report and I only read the first page and then got distracted.

None of the schools do it, that's why it was on the front page. Big no-no out here.

Have you found out how to get help for your 4 year old? I know each state is different for special services, so I thought I would ask. At 4 years old, the school district can do an evaluation and see what services he qualifies for. If you need any private therapy, you might be able to get suggestions here. You can send me a message if you want to as I went through the same thing.
