Help!
My three year old is very constipated. He is a very picky eater. I need something that I can hide in his food to help him. Ive been putting wheat germ in whatever I can but all the healthy foods he needs,he won't have anything to do with. (It's a continuing battle) Any ideas or tips would be great!! Thank you!!!

I'm sorry.
Didn't know it was for a child. Try applejuice, applesauce, or baby prunes.

CHIROPRACTOR!!! I used to work in a chiropractor's and started the position immediately after my maternity leave. My daughter had constipation and gas problems and when I brought her in to see the chiro there was an immediate improvement. Chiropractors can also help with ear aches, allergies, colic, and other numerous things in children (just an FYI). Good luck and hope I helped:)

Will he eat pears at all? I was having a problem with my son being constipated, too. I read that pears were high in fiber, so now he's eating those every night and I've had no more problems. I think there is something on the market that you can shake into any food or even into water. I think its powdered fiber, but I can't think of the brand name. I hope this all works out for you.

Hi K.,
I have this problem with my almost 3yr old too. I have found that if I put a 1/2 teaspoon of Benefiber in her sippy cup 3 times a day it helps her. It isn't immediate acting but if she goes 2-3 days without a BM then I give it to her for one day and usually the next day she goes. So give it a try. I know the bottle says to ask a doc under the age of six, but my doc said to give her what I mentioned above. Does he like grapes or raisens? Try them too but not too many it may have the opposite effect on him. If he is having a hard time having the BM make sure he drinks alot of liquids. My doc told me that if a child doesn't have a BM for a couple of days then their system reabsorbs the water in their poop and makes it even harder to go. hope this helps.

Try prune juice or baby food prunes. You can mix the juice with apple juice or the food with applesauce. I tried it with my son and it worked great.

My grandson has the medication but if we give it to him he has very loose stools and it is hard when he was just recently potty trained so we give him prune juice cut with half of some other juice and we give him oatbran bread (doesn't taste any different than white), he loves baby carrots dipped in ranch dressing, fresh apples, I got these from a website about preschool age constipation: Fiber rich breads, crackers, cereals, fruits (raisins, dates, prunes, pears, cantaloupe) and vegetables (broccoli, beans, corn, peas, popcorn). Add unprocessed wheat bran to favorite foods (peanut butter, pudding, oatmeal). Any of these will help. Good luck.

This one's easy. Call your doc tomorrow and ask for a prescription for Miralax. It's a powder that dissolves without taste, color or other detection in ANY liquid. Trust me on this one--I have had 3 kids with severe constipation due to neuromuscular disease, and it works great! K.

Does your son like bananas? they are the perfect food if they are stopped up it will make them go if they have diarriah it will help to stop it. Also try a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, they have a gazillon falvors out there so surly he will like one. When my son gets really contipated I lay him on his belly and take a rectal themometer with vasaline on it and insert it like I am taking his temp and turn it slowly . It helps to stimulate that area and the vasaline makes it come out easier so it doesn't hurt so bad. I hope it works out well.

Apple juice and plenty of exercise. Be sure to water down the apple juice some as it can cause diaherra. Water is # one if he will drink it. Lay him on the floor on his back and do the bicycle with his legs, gently pushing them back and forth. That helps some to. But exercise is the best thing to keep any of us regular. Good luck.

Hi K.,
I would certainly talk with your doctor about this, and maybe get a rec. for a gastroenterologist. My daughter (5 yrs) had/has the same problem since she was a baby, although it has gotten much better recently. We tried everything we could think of, and that the pediatricain recommended (Diet, laxatives, fiber, mineral oil, etc) but nothing seemed to make much of a difference. She was miserable and often in pain, and not able to potty train because she was hurting so badly that she held it in and then lost the ability to control herself.
Finally, we saw a gastroent. that started her on a prescription of Glycolax and a regular schedule of after dinner potty time. It has worked wonders, although it took quite a while for us to come up with a daily dose that worked but was not too much for her. Glycolax works differently than laxatives and has been the only thing that works for her, we are now in the process of weaning her off of her daily dose, after over a year, but the gastroent. says she may need it occasionally for quite a while. It's just the way she is, she has the same diet, etc. as her 2 older sisters who never have had this problem. I know how heartbreaking this can be. We were dancing in the halls when she was finally able to go without pain! Don't give up until you find something that works for you! Good luck to you.
L.

PS: Glycolax is the generic name for Miralax

my son has the same problem. i always give him apple juice...especially when he has constipating foods. I just give him a sippy cup a day of apple juice unless he has had a lot of milk or cheese then i will give him 2 sippy cups full. he loves apple juice. the medication will only work for a little while...i tried it! when my son first got this problem, he didnt like apple juice so i tried him on EVERYTHING there is to try...EVERYTHING!!! and NOTHING worked. i finally tried him on apple juice again and he liked it and it works...prune juice will work the same. probably even grape juice. good luck and i hope it works :D

Hello have you tried Karo Syrup, sorry bad speller. I have had to do that and it seemed to work and it is sweet. You can put it in water or milk, I used to put it in my daughters formula, it seemed to help. If that does not work I would call the doctor, my daughter is 2 almost 3 in march and she is on a powder, not sure of the name and it is working great, it goes in her drink and she dosen't mind it a bit.

Give him juice instead of milk with meals. Add in an extra sports drink every day to keep his hydration. After a warm bath massage his tummy, up the right side across his ribs and down the left applying slight pressure when off the ribs. Add in a daily walk around the block and he should be regular in no time.

My doctor always said push alot of juice like white grape. I have also used the over the counter Little Tummies laxative if he is in alot of pain it really seemed to help my little girl. The doctor had told me not to use the Karo Syrup, but that was when she was really young like 5 months, so that might also be ok. Good luck

I agree with the lady with the first response. My 3 year old son has been on Miralax for about a year. There are no side effects and they wont become dependant on it. He wa sso badly constipated that he had to have four enemas in the hospital (he was backed up for a month and his normal doc thought it was a diarhea problem since that's all that would come out). Miralax has really worked for him...and they make a generic form of it so it's a bit cheaper.

I tried giving my son lots of fruit juices, none of them worked for him. He could drink juice all day long and still be constipated. But if you call your doctor he/she should be able to help you out. I'm sure it's a pretty common thing with kids, especially when potty training!

My daugther has been constipated off and on for a while. I have tried all the things people have suggested. My pedetration said to give her half of a tea spoon of milk of magnesia with milk if it has been a couple of days. Try adding as much fresh fruits and veggies you can get him to eat. Pruns are great!! Try dried apricots too. Lots of water and fluids. Give him lots of 100% juice. I mix 1/3 juice with water for my daugther. She loves it that way. Also, she loves yogurt with high fiber cereal mixed in. We also give her whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Good luck with!!

Hi! You've received a lot of good advice but I don't think I saw the one thing that worked for my 3 year old - which is one teaspoon of cherry flavored milk of magnesia. Works well with no cramping. Also, after he had held his bm so long I knew it would be painful to get out - we used a baby suppository (which is similar to a tiny enema). It was not as invasive as I first thought. They are small and can be administered quickly. My little guy was scared of course at first but said it didn't hurt once it was over and the bm definently came out quickly so be near the potty. This may get you over the initial "stop up". Good Luck - I know its frustrating :)

Have you tried giving him prune juice? If he will drink it, try giving it to him without watering it down. At least that worked for my son. We tried changing his diet by adding a lot of fiber filled foods but that just didn't work well enough. But I'm sure you have noticed that what works, or doesn't work, for one child will be the exact opposite for another, so these are at least some thoughts. Also, when my daughter had it when she was younger her doctor said to just get some Metamucil or Citrucel. I hope you find what works for your son!!! God Bless!

Since constipation is your problem, put light corn syrup in whatever he is drinking. It is like a laxative. Try it.

Will he eat spaghetti sauce? If he does try very very finely pureeing prunes and put it in the sauce. You only need a small amount and you can't taste it at all.

Other than that juice is always a good constipation choice. But you also may want to make sure his constipation is due to a food issue and not just due to him not wanting to go. Sometimes kids this age don't want to go simply because of a power issue (remember this is one of the few things a kid his age has control over) or it may be he feels self conscious going when he needs to and holds it.
