Constipation - Burleson,TX

My son is 22 months old and has been constipated since last Friday the 28th. I have taken him to his peditrician and she took him off all dairy and told me to just give him apple and prunce juice. I tried this for a while and it is still not working. They then told me to give him Miralax and give it to him in juice. He cries everytime he makes a bowel movement and they are all hard. He is hardly eating and his stomach feels really bloated. I am just not sure if I can do anything else. His doctor's office doesn't think this is too serious, but I just feel so bad for him. Has anyone else had experience with this and has anything else worked? It just doesn't seem like anything is working for him.

What can I do next?

Also pear juice and anything with lots of fiber-fruit is great! But if his stomach is bloating and you are concerned, I'd also be concerned and try another dr. for a second opinion or at least get in contact with his dr. again and tell him/her that the situation is not getting any better!

How many times did you give him the Miralax? Miralax is extremely gently, but usually needs to be given a few times to really start working. You may even need to give it to him for up to a month - one dose per day.

My neighbor's daughter went through something very similar. She was constipated and then when she finally did go, it hurt so bad that she started holding it in. Then it was a vicious cycle. Her pedi actually prescribed suppositories that she gave to her daily that got her regular again and after a while because it stopped hurting when she went she was able to control it all on her own. I will say this...if you aren't comfortable with your pedi's advice, then I would find a new pedi. A mother knows her child better than anyone. Perhaps a second opinion would help you find your son some much needed relief. I know this is probably not the help you were seeking, but sometimes mother's just need help listening to their own "little inner voice". Good luck! We will say a prayer for you both!

You might ask the doctor to screen for celiac disease. While most docs think you have to the "big D" when you have that disease, my youngest son was also always constipated, despite a good diet. We didn't learn he had celiac until he was 8 and he was amazed the first time he had a BM and it didn't hurt. Also, the abdominal bloating can be a sign of intestinal inflammation, which goes along with celiac. My son lost inches in his waist after going on the gluten-free diet. Celiac is still highly underdiagnosed, as it's one of the most common genetic disorders (yes, if your child has this, then both parents and siblings should also be screened). Here's a good overview: http://gluten.net/celiac.html
Our pediatrician also couldn't really figure out our sons' GI issues for years - the older one did have the big "D" often and the younger one was always constipated despite a diet high in fruit, veggies, low dairy and non-processed foods.

My daughter used to get constipated a lot. For a little while, we were having to use a glycerin suppository about once a month (she was constipated much more than this, but we didn't want her to become dependent on something to be able to "go"). You can get them at the drugstore and they usually soften things up some to be able to be passed easier. We tried changing around her diet too help with the constipation as much as possible. Watch out for certain foods that can cause constipation like: dairy(which I see you already noted), bananas, one site I've seen says cooked carrots too but I've never noticed a problem with those.

Increase his fiber. Some good sources of fiber(copying and pasting some things here): Raw, unpeeled fruits and vegetables (especially beans, sweet potatoes, peas, turnip greens, raw tomatoes and corn) have the most fiber. Give enough grams of fiber to equal their age in years plus 5 each day (check the nutritional label for high fiber foods and snacks with at least 3-4g of fiber per serving). Vegetable soups are especially high in fiber and also add more fluid to your child's diet. Increase bran in your child's diet by offering bran cereals, bran muffins, shredded wheat, graham crackers, or whole wheat bread.

Poor thing, I can sympathize with you my baby had all sorts of problems when he started solids and I did the prune thing which helped a little, but the one thing that has been consistent is Baby Jarro-Dophilus which you can get at Whole Foods it helps support good intestinal health you keep it in the refrigerator and it has helped maintain his BM to be consistent and regular. Also another thing that I have done is I use Natural Vitality Baby Calm, it is a Magnesium supplement and it helps them sleep better and go regularly. Magnesium is something that your body does not get enough of in your regular diet. I hope something helps you, just know the first couple of times he goes is probably going to rough until you can maintain his regularity.

My son has had issues since he was 10 months when I had to start supplementing with formula. If they have really painful bowl movements, they start to hold it in and if that continues for a long time, their colon can stretch and it causes the bowel movements to stay large, because the colon is larger than it should be. I ended up in the ER with my son one night because he had stool lodged so high and not even an enema would help (they ended of doing a more invasive milk of molasses enema). The pedi GI (who it took our regular pedi forever to refer us to because he thought it wasn't a big deal) made us cleanse him out after he saw his xrays. 2 capfuls of miralax 1 time a day for two days. We could tell when the 'plug' came out. Now he does half a capful of miralax once a day. He has been on it for 1 year and will probably continue for the next 6 months. It takes time for the colon to go back to its normal size. Miralax takes time to take effect. He has had no other side effects except that he is a lot happier not being constipated.
Another thing...the GI did a ton of allergy tests/celiac test/among others. We found out my son had allergies to soy, beef, chocolate and eggs. The soy and chocolate allergies are not very strong anymore, but we did discover that when we didn't feed him any of those 4 things, he was less bloated and not constipated as often. Hope this helps. I wish we had gone to the GI a lot sooner.

OH poor thing!! We went through this with my daughter. You need to give him a Fleet enima. That will get it all out and relieve him. I know its heartbreaking to see him like that. Thats will get you the quickest solution. Myralax takes a couple of days to kick in. You need to just give him the enima and relieve him. Especially when its been that long. We also when she started to poop and push, we would lay her down take off the diaper and bend her leggs and push them into her stomach, to help her get it out. She got impackted alot!! I know this sound gross but we would get some gloves on and try and help her get it out that way also. Sorry!!! I know how you feel!!

We have problems with constipation too. Miralax is OK but long term was not good-caused some behaviour issues. We added Benefibre powder to my sons diet. It is tasteless and can be mixed in with food or drink. When my son is having a painful BM we wipe some vaseline around the anus to help it pass through. That really works well.

Good luck

A. if my children haven't produced a bowel movement within two days this is what I would do. I take a half of a glycerin suppositiories and insert it up the rectum (I didn't say this would be peaches and cream) and the boys have been known to produce a soft bowel movement within 15 minutes. I've never waited over 15 minutes for a bowel movement even though the bottle says, "15 mins to an hour." This has not failed me yet I have three boys ages 2,4 and 7 and they are relieved once this is taken. I also put benefiber in there drinks regularly.

I know this is awful...my daughter had this same problem and didn't go for 10 DAYS!!!!! It was horrible! Keep giving him the Miralax...it has been a Godsend for us. This will make the stool much softer and easier to pass. Keep giving it to him until he gets more regular for a while and then taper back. I also rubbed my daughter's tummy a lot!!

My oldest now 7 still has issues like that. I started giving her half a fiber cracker in the morning and still do that. It works and they think its a graham cracker. They have apple and cinnamon. Just a suggestion. :)
