Constipated Toddler

My little one has been having this problem for the past year, but now it's getting worse. He goes 3-6 days without a bowel movement, then has these horribly painful trips to the potty. He eats fruit and veggies, and gets prune juice regularly. There must be something else wrong with what I'm feeding him. I tried to give him Miralax and Metamucil but he won't drink a whole glass of dissolved medicine. I've read that limiting cow's milk or switching to soy milk helps. Anyone with suggestions, medical or dietary? Maybe you can recommend some fruit shake or something I can make for him. I hate to see him suffer.

What can I do next?

My daughter was extremely constipated for months she would scream and cry every time she had to poo. Her doctor said she justed needed more water and to give her glycerin suppositories when it got really bad. But her diapers were always very wet and I didn't want to give her drugs. So we took her completely off dairy. Soy milk, cheese, yogurt nothing with dairy. The results were amazing! We have not had a problem in over a year (she is now 2.5). She is back now on regular cheese and yogurt but regular milk binds her right back up. Also we have found blueberries to be a natural laxative.
Good Luck

Hi,

My son dealt with constipation for a LONG LONG time. He used to scream everytime he had a bowel movement and I understand how hard it is for you to watch. That said, cow's milk was definitely an issue for him. All his problems started after he switched from formula to whole milk. We had to switch him to 2% milk which helped a lot initially. But for almost a year, we used mirilax. How do you give him Mirilax? I used to mix it in juice and he would usually drink it. We also did the prune juice which helped him significantly. I know you have tried all these, but continue with it. Its a very hard thing to watch. Hang in there. My son is now 3 and half and he hasn't had constipation issues for almost a year now. He somehow just outgrew it. Do give your son lots of water to drink, apple jucie works really well too. And pears!!

Good luck.

I've found that a little Dark Karo syrup in the milk helps. My daughter usually has a dirty diaper with in the day if not with in and hour of drinking her milk.

Good luck.

For my 15 months old toddler who used to get constipated randomly, I started mixing toddler magic tea in his bottles and got him relieved from that constipation.

Hello,

My daughter used to pass hard little balls and she would cry. My doctor recommended me to give her 1 to 2 tsp of karo syrup in a glass of water each day. We eneded up with the full 2 tsp we used this for about 2 months and then off and on with or second child. It worked for us. The reason it worked is because "Corn (karo) syrup is sweet like sugar, and when it gets into the intestine it stimulates it to move the stool along. It also draws a little more fluid into the intestine, thus making the stools less hard.

As my girls have gotten bigger we drink water more the juice. Not only because of the loaded sugar but because it keeps them regular. Now with the flavor packs to add to a bottled water it is easy.

Also here is an artical that I found very useful and you might to..

My daughter had this smae issue. We were told to cut back on the dairy and to give her Kondremel. We were only able to find it at CVS but it's a mild laxative and will help soften the stool so when they do go it doesn't hurt as much. Her recommended dosage by the doc was 1 tbs but we were able to give her only 1 tsp for it to work. We gave it to her once a day for about 6 weeks and then went to every other day for 2 weeks and then stopped. she still doesn't go every day but not everyone does. She's much better and if she goes 3 days without a BM I give her the kondremel and all is well. good Luck!

My 5 year old son has been having some constipation lately, we have started giving him a little Benefiber in his juice in the morning. It is tasteless, dissolves completely, and does not thicken the drink you put it in. I would ask your doctor about recommendations or approval/dosing of Benefiber. Just make sure that as you add this type of fiber to a diet you must also make sure the person is getting enough fluids, water is best. It softens the stool by adding bulk from water pulled into the intestines, so plenty of water needs to be available. Good luck.
