Has anyone enrolled their child in community college? I was just looking at the local community college catalog and was surprised that they offer enrollment for young children. I'm thinking that at this level it's really only for gifted children, but is it?
The classes for younger kids are enrichment classes, not college level, and not gifted level either. Well, juniors and seniors can begin to earn college credits though, I wish I knew that when I was in high school, I would have done it!
Our community college offers classes to kids that are for fun and enrichment not necessarily grades.
The community college here offers kid's classes in the summer. It's not a gifted program- it's a summer thing. The kid has to be 6 years old to attend here so we're thinking of enrolling our daughter this summer. It will give her something to do and be educational. Kinda keep up learning over the summer.
kids on campus classes are great and i highly recommend them, but you have to be aware that they are not credit classes. your child will be exposed to college atmosphere, which is a cool thing, but the work (and expense) of college level still lie ahead.
our local college has the ESSENCE program for gifted kids, in which they can enroll early AND get half-priced credits for up to 12 credit classes. it's awesome and i'm glad my kids got to do that.
i teach at a community college in their enrichment program (homeschoolers and adults). again, great stuff, and not restricted to TAG kids at all, but not credit.

There are 2 types:
Enrichment classes (just like you'd find at a community center) & Dual Enrollment. Dual Enrollment allows highschool kids to take college courses (usually for free). Dual Enrollment are credit classes, enrichment are not.
My 8yo has taken MANY classes at the University of Washington... but they aren't university level classes. They're kid's classes put ON by the university (astronomy, biology, etc.). They're usually multiage classes that are designed for normal kids.
In the back of the catalog, there are probably phone numbers
for the various departments.
Why not call and ask the college what the criteria are
for enrolling young children.
The community colleges by me offer kids classes such as Art, movies, reading etc to expand their knowledge while having fun. It is more of something to do with the weekend or school breaks than earning education credits. My d wants to take a photography class but can't until next year when she turns 12.
