So my hubby is having his first colonoscopy tomorrow. He wasn't supposed to have anything but clear liquids today and then drink his stuff starting at 6 pm. He ate a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and fried okra at 1:30 today because he forgot! Well, since his procedure isn't until 4pm tomorrow, we both thought it'd be okay to just go ahead and do it. So he started drinking that mixture at 7 (instead of 6 bc he was late getting home!), and now he is on the toilet & can't get up! Lol 8)
We were afraid if he tells them that he ate then they would reschedule, and with it being the end of the year & us going to Colorado after Christmas, they might reschedule for next year & then we'd have to meet our deductible and it's already met right now :/ Soooooo....anyone know if everythings going to be okay with getting the colonoscopy tomorrow, even though he ate lunch today?? (it will be more than 24 hrs from eating until he gets the procedure)and, Is he going to be on the toilet ALL NIGHT??
Thanks for your input, advice,....and prayers! :D

So What Happened?

Ok I feel better! I guess it does make sense that if he is pooping clear then it's all out! :D No he isn't working tomorrow, thank goodness! Thank you for making sure; he will be pretty tired in the morning from all of this ;p
Thanks for the tips to drink extra water too! He usually doesn't drink very much, so I will really push him to drink more! Thanks so much Mamas!! It's good to know this is the worst part! :)
ETA: LOL @ Riley J; THANK YOU! I have read that before but COMPLETELY forgot about it!! I don't know how I forgot, but I did! Showing to Hubby ASAP! :D

Those were my instructions too, but my test was in the morning. I am no doctor, but that prep should clean him out pretty good by tomorrow afternoon. If he is pooping clear liquids by then, or nothing at all, then should be ok. If they get in there and he is not cleared out enough, they will have to reschedule. Good luck!

And here's an excerpt... on exactly that topic.

After mixing the jug of 'nucleaer laxitive' and starting to drink it

..."This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes -- and here I am being kind -- like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.

The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, ''a loose watery bowel movement may result.'' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but: Have you ever seen a space shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet."...

He should be fine.
I'm no doctor, but I've had numerous surgical procedures.
For the colonoscopy, they want you cleared out as they will introduce a probe into your tush. They don't want the you-know-what hitting the fan.
Plus, they won't be able to see well with a bunch of stuff in your tract.
The other reason for limiting the diet or making you fast is that often medication to sedate you can make a person nauseous and they don't want the danger of you aspirating any solids or choking on them.

I literally had one very uptight admissions nurse reschedule a surgery because I had forgotten and chewed a piece of gum. My doctor wasn't very happy. Chewing gum did increase my actual stomach juices, but it's not like I'd drank even 8 ounces of water in over 12 hours. There was nothing for me to throw up or choke on and that was general anesthesia.

I think he'll be okay.
And, unfortunately, an all-nighter in the bathroom is just part of the colonoscopy procedure.

Best wishes.

He'll be fine...personal experience here. Make sure after his procedure that he goes on probiotics. The stuff he's drinking is not only stripping out the yuck stuff but the good bacteria as well and he'll feel it for a while if he doesn't. And yes, he'll be on the toilet all night.

God bless,
M.

Loving:

He should be fine for today's procedure.

it's not fun going without solids for that long. broth will be his best friend today. funny. My doctors told me no solids 12 hours prior to colonoscopy not 24. I guess every doctor is different?

Hope all is well and that they find nothing!! :)

I think he is fine to do the procedure since the appointment isn't until 4pm. For this round, he should get off the toilet soon if he started at 7. Meanwhile, I would have him drink a lot of liquid tonight up until the point they told him to quit drinking his fluids. Having lots of fluid helps flush everything out. I assume he needs to do another dose of the medicine in the morning? 2 doses are normal. so assuming that he drinks a lot of fluid between now and 2nd dose, I think he will be fine.

Also you didn't ask but if he is worried at all, he will be fine. He should get an iv of fluids only, then talk to DR, then he will wake up in the recovery room....super easy. Good luck!

I had colonoscopy done couple months ago and the first question I got was if I was clear there (meaning if #2 was liquid/yellowish watery water LOL). As long as he clears out his colon and only "water" starts coming out then it means he is good to go. If it's not cleared his dr may want him to come back because dr couldn't see anything. It's important to be emptied there LOL And I hear colon is really long - lots of gunk there ;-)

Because he ate today- he might spend long time tonight in the bathroom. No fun!
Make sure tomorrow your dh is not eating at all. Good luck tomorrow.
The procedure was fine, the preparation was a hardest part for me.

Drinking that stuff and being in the bathroom non-stop is sort of the worst part....Just let him know to "check his dignaty at the door"....still better to be checked every couple of year then getting a bad surprise.

Blessings.....

Umm, yeah. He'd better at least sleep close to the toilet. Like, not across the house from it.

My guess is that if he does the prep as directed, he'll be fine. Esp. if his procedure isn't until four. From my experience, the prep tends to overdo it and then some. You also want to make sure he stays hydrated with clear sports drinks. I got pretty dehydrated when I did my procedure. It's probably a good thing he ate something, too, because the 24 hours plus without food is really rough. Is he working tomorrow? He might want to call in. I was pretty spent and I had my procedure in the morning.

LOL! Mine husband is having his done tomorrow too. This isn't our first rodeo...I can tell you that with his proceedure being so late in the day...your worries shouldn't be that he might not be ready. I believe he will. But, be certain to tape his MOUTH SHUT!!! You don't want him inadvertantly snacking tomorrow or it is FOR SURE cancilled!!! :) We'll be thinking about ya!

He'll be fine. The liquid diet is more for the ease of clearing the colon than the actual clearing of the colon. It will just be a little rough on the way out.

He should be fine since it is not until 4PM. If it was 8AM it would be a
different story. So it will be 26 hours since he ate. My husband had his
done late and he ate a bit earlier than your husband and was fine.
