Hi, Does anyone out there know if I can take ANY cold medicine during pregnancy. I don't have a fever but I have a sore throat and cough with runny nose. Are cough drops ok??
Thanks for your advice,
S.

When I had a bad cold with my twins - my OB let me take Tylenol and cough drops. (Nothing for the running nose, though.)

My cough stayed REALLY bad, so my OB actually gave me a prescription for cough syrup with codeine because he was concerned the coughing would trigger pre-term labor. (I was 35 weeks at that point.)

Hi S.,
always check with your provider before trying anything. I had ricola drops and I also used an essential oil called "wellness" I'm sure it's similar to the eucalyptus oil. You can put drops on a cotton swab and put it between your pillow case and pillow. I also like to drink hot ginger tea. I grate fresh ginger (as much as you can handle) and steep it in the hot water. You can add some honey to soften it, but the ginger will really sooth your throat. feel better soon! L

S.,

I'd talk to the Doc first, but I was told that Robitussin was acceptable. I got a handy workbook with both of my kids (that I ignored, mostly) that had a page with the okay meds to take while pregnant, and nursing.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

eucalyptus is right! It will drain alot of stuff. Hot honey and lemon juice will sooth your throut. Pepermint tea will settle your stomach, help your nose and help you sleep. Vitamin C drops may be better than cough drops.

Hi~

This sounds really dumb, but when I was pregnant(right before I had my boy)I got a terrible cold.I took Tylenol as needed, and(you are going to laugh)I bought a bottle of eucalyptus essential oil,and would put a drop or two in the bath tub.And if the stuffiness was really bad I would take a quick sniff of the bottle of oil.It seemed to help a little bit.

The things you will do to get relief while you are prego....lol!!:)

Before you do anything, though talk to your Dr.

Good Luck!

Tylenol is always okay . . . but call a pharmacy! They can tell you for sure what you can take and what you should stay away from . . . sometimes they even recommend home remedies!

Cough drops are fine. If I remember correctly, some Benadryl is okay too. Tylenol is on the okay list too, and that should help with any headache and the sore throat. You could also drink some hot tea (optional honey and lemon) and that should help with the throat and cough. Also, don't forget the value of VapoRub - rub it on your chest and it will help to loosed up all of that stuff in your chest.
My mom swears on gargling hot salt water to cure lots of cold symtoms.Definitely offers some relief of symptoms, so you might try it! Take water as hot as you can take it without burning yourself (about half of a coffee cup full), mix in a tablespooon or so of salt. Stir well. Take a mouthful and swish it around, then gargle as long as you can. Repeat as many times as you can and do it as often as you can/as often as you feel you need to.
Good luck! Being pregnant and sick is the worst thing ever!!!
