My son is 18 months and when he gets a cold it literally lasts for a month. I asked my pediatrician last year about it and his answer made a lot of sense. Essentially, all of the things that adults do to ward-off or treat a cold are "off limits" to babies. His "rule of thumb" is that it will take a baby twice as long to recover from a cold.
I asked about allergies for the same reason at about the same age- essentially the doctor told me that he was too young to determine whether or not he had them, but that we should treat his environment as though he did-
1. Nothing "perfumed"- including us!
2. Humidifier in the room
3. Dust/vaccuum daily
4. Warm baths with the Johnson's vapor bath
Good luck!

does he cough? did the doctor check his chest and breathing? I am surprised for such a young baby he says there is nothing he can do. Did he rule out bronchilitis (sp?). My girls were two months old when they had to start using a nebulizer that had albuterol in it. I would assume you go for a 2nd opinion.

I agree with all of the suggestions previously posted. Especially the one about getting a second opinion or better yet, a new doctor. Im sure its just the dry air and allergens but they should be more helpful to a new mom and stuffy noses at 2 weeks old is something a pediatrician should be on top of.

Hi Alyssa,
Have you ever thought of changing household products?
Alot of product like laundry, shampoos, bath soaps etc. have harmful ingredients in them. Johnson's vapor bath has quaternium 15 which is a known fomaldehyde releaser which is toxic. Alot of companies change the name of the ingredient so we really don't know what's in them. I shop from a great company that has over 300 products which have safer ingredients for the whole family and for the environment as well. The great thing is they are economically priced and delivered right to your front door! They have things like cleaning and laundry, bath and body, over the counter pharmaceuticals, make-up and vitamins. You do have to be referred by someone and it's only $1 to join for whole year! Everything has a 60 day empty bottle money back guarantee! If you would like to hear more information, please feel free to contact me.

We have also gone through our share of congestion. We have elevated the mattress, sit with him in a steamy bathroom to loosen up the mucus and help suck out the nose, we use a cold mist humidifier most nights, especially now that the heat is on. Of course, the doctor should have given you some guidance on this as well. good luck

Do you have a warm air humidifier? If not, get one and maybe even a small air filter for the room.

Please do the following:
1. Ask your doctor if you can use Little Noses Saline Spray along with a suction bulb to take away the boogies/ mucus from his nose.
2. Do rub Baby Vicks on his chest, back and feet at night (followed by socks).
3. You could add Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath to his bath water (use separate water for washing his face, so it doesn't irritate his eyes).
4. Get a cool mist humidifier in his room.
Finally, do trust your instinct. Get a second opinion from another pediatrician quickly to rule out pneumonia or bronchitis.

see an allergist. He might be allergic to something (like Dairy) and causes constant congestion.
