Hi, I spent years in medical accounting and am a certified dermatological coder. I left the field, and my friend started her own business doing coding so she can work from home most days.
She loves it and wouldn't do anything else.
I got to the point of hating working in healthcare. Getting money out of the insurance companies is difficult and frustrating. You have to file and refile and refile again. If they find 3 errors on the claim, they deny for one, let you refile and they deny for the nest and repeat. (I know people who worked for insurance companies.) You send in the documentation and they request it again and again. So your follow up is frustrating.
Also when you call, you are usually dealing with a call center in another country who may or may not know what they are talking about. I called to ask a question about something on the EOB (Explanation of Benefits) and they just read to me what the EOB said. I could read it myself, I wanted to know what it meant, but the person had no idea.
Before I worked in healthcare, I had worked in accounting in other fields and that is what I went back to.
I don't want to totally discourage you, and while I would never go back, that is me. Someone else suggested you talk to the school. That's a good idea, you may love it.
Best of luck in your search
