Clothes to Donate

I have been working on cleaning out my closet the last few weeks. I know I can donate them to Goodwill or something, but I am hoping to find a women's shelter or mission that accepts clothes, many of these clothes are semi-professional in style. If anyone knows of a such a place here in Portland, please let me know.
Thanks, R.

Hey R.! I think it's great that you are looking for a shelter to donate your clothes too! A great women's shelter that I have worked with in the past who I think would love your donation is called "Shepherd's Door" it is in Northeast Portland. They take in women in abusive or needy situations with or without children and help them get back on their feet, finding jobs etc. So I think your clothing would be of great value. Here is their info:

Dress for success is the first one that comes to mind
www.dressforsuccess.org

They give away their clothes to women who have been out of the work force for some time, & don't have what they need to go to interviews, etc. Reason doesn't matter, they help the homeless, or newly divorces, or even those, who just are at the poverty level.

Another one is Shepards Door. It is the womens branch of Portland rescue Mission. They have a thrift store, & all proceeds go to help homeless women.

Welcome to Portland, I hope you find it "warm" in spirit, & make some new friends.

We send boxes to the philippines. My husband is from a small village and we pack boxes as full as we can for 65$ and his mom distributes the clothing to the people. One year we someone gave us $400 and we were able to serve christmas dinner to each person in the village! it was so much fun. They are always so appreciative of our efforts to help. We are no a non-profit yet. we are working on it.

I was making a comment that our boxes have consited of girls clothing a lot lately and my mother in-law informed me that colors do not matter. clothing is clothing and they will dress a boy or girl in anything they can get. It really put things into perspective for me. I am always amazed at the stories I hear.

Anyhow,
If anyone is interested we send Men's coats for the fishermen (they go out to sea three weeks at a time and it gets cold at night). Woman's clothing, Men's Clothing, Children's Clothing, SHOES... Stained Not Stained... it doesn't matter to them. clothes are clothes. I don't worry about size either because the bigger clothing can be turned into bags or sewn to be made smaller. These people are very resorceful.

We don't mind picking up bags/boxes of clothing either. Anything helps!
If you have old back packs drawn on or not.. those are always helpful for the students.

You must remember most of these people only eat one meal a day that consists of rice and dried fish.

Just throwing it out there in case anyone needs to get those old clothes, sheets, shoes, coats etc. out of their garage!

Hello R.,
My name is H., and I work for a place called The Good Neighbor Center in Tigard. It is a homeless shelter for families with children, and it is a non-proft orginazation. We would love to have your charitable items, and will even provide you with a tax reciept. The items donated go straight to the families that need them the most. Some of the families here come in with only the clothes on thier back. The address here is 11130 S.W. Greenburg rd. Tigard Or. 97223, we are located by Washington square mall. Our shelter is run mainly by donations and help from the community, so your things would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any children's clothing, we can take it off of your hands. We are having a children's clothing closet for the families in need we work with. ____@____.com

For your clothing, I would contact your local community college. They will often have clothes closets for women who are entering the workforce and need clothing for this. I know for a fact the Clark College in Vancouver does this.
