Clothes in the Dryer Smell "Burnt"

My jeans smell like smoke or burnt material. Do I need to have our dryer inspected or cleaned or both? My husband wants to clean it but I'm nervous that if it isn't done thoroughly we could have a hazard waiting to happen. So what would you do? Clean it yourself or hire someone? Inspection or not?
Thanks in advance!

Actually yes, the jeans that smell are brand new and this is the first time I washed and dried them! I set it on med heat to avoid shrinkage. Not all the clothes smell like the jeans that were in the same load.

What can I do next?

Clean myself. Cleaning the dryer is very easy. All you have to do is take off the back--or front if that is how yours is made. Then clean any dust and lint. Also check the belts. Those are also very easy to replace. A burnt smell could be a belt rubbing. If it has to do with the motor, then I would call someone in. There are also a lot of videos and how-tos online. Just google "how to clean my dryer". I think ehow has a good one if I remember correctly. Also be sure to use a long brush to clean out the vent systems and hoses.

You can buy a cleaning kit from Lowes or Home Depot. It has some long bottle-brush looking things. Take off your dryer vent and clean it thoroughly, and use the brush to push out anything from where the screen goes in. Be sure to clean the screen every time you use the dryer.

brand new jeans? Some new jeans/clothes will do that.

everyday clothes? If they're in there too long, they can smell burnt... especially if it's a combo load (lightweight mixed with those jeans).

My vote: try another load. See what happens. Use a cleaning kit.

& then get a repairman if the issue is not resolved.

You may have left the clothing in the dryer too long?

I have the lint lizard (attaches to vacuum-works well)

Clean out the lint traps, back of the dryer, hose that leads out of the house, and access to outside.

I also clean the lint catcher with soap and water.

It's a pretty easy thing to clean out the vent.
Lint builds up and it is a fire hazard.
Clothes can scorch in the dryer if the auto off when dry feature fails.
If the jeans are the only thing that smells, and nothing else in that load smells the same, I'd tend to think is a residual effect of the dye they used on the jeans.
Some of them can smell pretty bad when washed.
Google 'remove dye smell new jeans' and you'll find lot's of info.

Clean it out... My cousins dryer just caught fire for this reason (below). Let your husband take it apart and clean it out. My cousin had to go through all that AFTER having a scary fire. Better do it before.

Mom:

When was the last time the dryer vent was cleaned out? If it has been a long time and the smokey smell is still lingering in the laundry room - then the lint that is in the venting system needs to be cleaned out.

Check the vent that leads out of the house...it's most likely chock full of lint and no air is circulating....it can and will cause a house fire.

Good luck!
