Cloth Diapers for Boys

We recently ordered a trial pack of cloth diapers, but are seeing quite a bit of leakage and are not 100% convinced we want to go that way. I'm seeking advice on what cloth diapers have worked on your sons, specifically in the 6 month + age group. Persons I know that use cloth diapers all have girls, and I know that there are big differences. Specific information on types of cloth diapers for our son would be great. Thanks!

Are you using rubber pants? Cloth diapers are not like disposable diapers, they require rubber pants. You just have to be diligent in changing so that the baby will not get a rash.

My son is 10 months - I have absolutely no issues at all with leaks (unless its been 5 hours LOL)

what are you using now? I dont fold mine any different - I use chinese DSQ prefold 4 x 8 x 4 - the infant size (green edged) are still working and at night I use a brown edged... eventually I will put the green edged in the brown at night as a doubler and use the brown in the day!

I am in Birmingham and would be happy to chat with you or show you what I use... feel free to message me :)

I get mine at green mountain - oh the more you wash the more quilted and absorbent they are! but you still shouldnt be having a problem.... :)

What kind of diapers are they? I have found *very* few AIOs that didn't leak, but I have great luck with pockets and my best non-leak solution is prefolds or fitteds with covers.

Changing more often may be the key -- you use more diapers, but it does keep them from leaking. We are so spoiled by disposables, I know when I use them occasionally I am always a little surprised at how often I have to change when we switch back. I have a girl, but I don't know that it's a girl/boy thing. Some kids, boy or girl, are just bigger wetters also, you might need to try a stuffer or soaker inside. When we're at home, I use a prefold with a stuffer and can even get away without a cover if I'm paying close attention and change her as soon as she wets (even in 'sposies, you are *supposed* to change as soon as they wet -- who does that?!). It really helps us avoid diaper rash, that's for sure!

Someone else just posted about cloth diapers today so check out there, but also check at www.luvingmammasdiapers.com Brandy is very knowledgable and can walk you through the choices.

I have a 1 1/2 year old son and we've always used cloth. We've never really had a problem with leakage.. are you using prefolds? I tend to think they're tighter than all in one's.

I raised four boys with cloth diapers. Just get a diaper liner and use the cloth inside. Tremendous savings and no chemicals touch their precious skin. An old time mom, Gladys

Also need to wash these clothes so need a bucket with a top to store in with water - till you wash a load of clothes. I do not use a commercial detergent as everything that touches your skin absorbs into your system. Much slower than eating but causes rashes, etc. There are excellent natural cleaners on the market or check my website www.myavalla.com/us/pwp/gyonker for the one I use.

We use Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers and we love them. They do not require rubber pants. We tried a few different brands before we found them and also had problems with leaks.

With the Fuzzi Bunz we use 2 microfiber inserts instead of one and we make sure to change him every 2 hours. They work great and I would never use another brand since we have had such a great experience with them.

We have been using the same set for almost 1 1/2 years and they still look like new. I plan to use them for our next child too. Make sure you are using only the approved laundry detergents. We use Shaklee since it is non-toxic.

We have saved so much money using these diapers and my son is much healthier because of it. Let me know if you have any questions!

Gerber brand worked for me with 3 boys. I lived overseas when the 2 older ones were born and cloth was unheard of. You wouldn't believe what they use!! But I scrounged around and ultimately found something resembling cloth diapers. But I also had family sending or bringing along a pkg of Gerber brand diapers. Great burp cloths and later dusting cloths too.
Most places should carry it. If not, go online and ask where you could get some.

Hello A., I used the pre-folded type, but fold down the front into the diaper so that you have a double layer where it counts most. It worked good for me. Good luck.

I used cloth on my son for the first 18 months, mostly pocket diapers and some prefolds with covers (PUL and wool). I have rarely had problems with leaks. You didn't mention what type of diapers you tried but I found that after my DS got a little older and bigger, I usually needed to use an extra pad or soaker overnight, to make sure there was no leakage during the long nighttime stretch. I also make sure to have some extra layers in the front. For example, when using a prefold I would fold it the long way and then fold it down in the front before putting it on the baby and fastening the cover. This gave more absorption in the front area. Also make sure the gussetting around the leg holes is completely covering the diaper (just tuck the diaper in if there is any part sticking out after you've put the diaper and cover on.) Make sure you have a cover that is a good fit for your baby's body type . . . some covers work better than others depending on if your baby has skinny legs or a wide waist. Also, if you have cotton prefolds or hemp soakers, make sure you wash them at least 3 times in hot water before using them. This fluffs them up and makes them more absorbent.

Most everyone I know who has committed to cloth diapering has had to experiment with some different types before finding the type that works best for them. I really loved the Bum Genius pocket diapers and my husband liked them too and I didn't have any problems with leaks with those. It's nice to have the prefolds as back up and have something like an all-in-one or pocket diapers for times when you just can't put that much effort into changing your little one! Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers are also a really good option for a quick and easy change. I think they are a bit more durable than the Bum Genius, too. The cotton soakers that go inside the pocket diapers can be folded or doubled to provide more absorption in the area that you need it most.

If you are new to the diapering scene, your best bet is to start with something that is more user-friendly, like a pocket diaper or an all-in-one (AIO). YOu can always experiment with the prefolds/covers when you have the time and inclination.

If you need anymore help, let me know.

p.s. my very favorite cover that I have NEVER had a leakage problem with was the imse vimse. I put that on over a prefold around 4pm and my son was accidentally not changed before bed and so slept all night with that thing on. He was completely soaked, but not one drop came out of that imse vimse - I was amazed.

What type of diapers are they, did you follow the pre-wash instructions for the diapers, and the washing instructions (very very little detergent no fabric softner or dryer sheets)

How is the fit? The waistband of the dipe should be pretty close to the belly button, and the legs should be snug but not tight.

When you take the leaky diaper off is it soaked? You may need to change more often (I had to change our 2nd son every 2hours during the day sometimes sooner) or add more absorbancy, or get a larger size dipe.

We used prefolds and fitteds with bummies super whisper wrap covers for our 2nd son who was a super soaker (seriously all that boy did was nurse and cry the first year of his life!) Sometimes how I folded the prefold made a difference in how long I could get by before changing (like when we were out and about)

A.,
Have you an experienced cloth diaper user to ask how to fold, pin, etc? Your plastic pants may be too large for his little leggies. (?)
you may email me and I could help further. Cloth diapering is so great!

I never cloth diapered myself, but I know a number of ladies who do and are knowledgable. I'd suggest asking them. They have a Meetup.com group called the N.Oakland/Lapeer Attachment Parenting Meetup Group. you can try searching for it on the meetup site (its ok if you don't live super close - I'm in Port Huron) or try www.attachementparenting.meetup.com/
