Hello, I was wondering if any of you out there use cloth diapers?? I am going to start and am haveing a bit of trouble deciding. I am thinking I am going to go with an ORGANIC prefold in a cover. I can not decided which type of covers to get. I am very interested in the wool or fleece because they have not plastic in or on them. That also makes me wonder if they leak. Has anyone used wool or fleece covers for their cloth diapers?? I would also appreciate info on who has had good luck with certain brands---especially ones made of Organic materials. I was also wondering if any of you have used the All-in-One cloth diapers, speciufically the BumGenius brand. Thank you ahead of time.

What can I do next?

I have used the Bum all in ones, and loved them!! We did cloth for my daughter then my son. For my soon however seemed to pee so much more that he overflowed out of everything. Now we didn't try the wool but a close friend did and she said that it was soooo much more absorbent. Good luck too you,

Hi C.. I'm using exactly what you're describing (although I have to admit that I'm not sure if the diapers or wool covers I'm using are organic). Good job for trying to go organic.

I got all my diapers from www.nickisdiapers.com and I use the Chinese Prefolds. I use Snappi fasteners to keep the diaper on, but I've seen another mom not use any fasteners because she used Bummmi wraps. The Bummis are plastic though (with a vent in back), so I've decided to go with wool.

I've been lucky to have a couple friends who are handy with knitting. I'm currently using about 3 hand made woolies (one is a pair of longies). Other than that, I have one wool diaper cover by Imse Vimse (which I found at Nicki's Diapers).

Wool is interesting. It can "leak", but more often you'll just be able to feel a little dampness. I consider that a good thing because then you can tell when your LO needs to be changed. Wool can tend to have a smell, but it's not all that bad. In fact, I think wool is antibacterial or antimicrobial......anti something. If you do have problems with leaks, it's probably because your wool needs to be lanolized again. You can hand wash them with Eucalan which is a nice product that combines a lavender, eucalyptus or unscented soap with some lanolin. OR (this is what I do), you continue to use that tube of Lansinoh that you got for breastfeeding and you drop a pea sized amount into some hot water along with a drop of liquid soap, swirl it around till it's emulsified (water looks milky) and soak your woolie for about 20 min. Squeeze out excess water by hand and then roll in a towel to get remaining water out and then hang to dry. Once you get used to it, the whole process is a breeze.

By the way, if I didn't have those talented friends, I'd probably try the Aristocrat wool soaker, especially the longie for winter. They're expensive, but I bet they're worth it.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. :)

We use cloth but not organic. We loved the Thirsties covers and now mainly use Bum Genius 2.0.
It takes some time to get that wash routine down but once you do it's so great. I have a recent post in my blog about cding if you want to read more. nestchatter.blogspot.com
Good luck!

Welcome to cloth diapering! You will LOVE it! It will save you a TON of money and is EASY to do. It isn't as gross as one might imagine. In fact, our diaper pail doesn't barely smell, unlike our trash can did with the disposables! YUCK!

Try Amy with TwigandVine.com. She is a stay at home mom that makes cloth diapers with organic and regular cotton fabrics. She is also cheaper than most commercial brands and I think better. I just used a Fuzzy Bunz diaper on my daughter and it leaked much sooner than any of the diapers did from Amy.

Also, look at getting cloth wipes and making your own wipe solution. It is super cheap and there isn't any harsh chemicals in your wipe solution.

Send me a post if you have any additional questions. I'd love to help!

We are cloth diapering my 9 week old son. :) Congrats on making the decision to switch!
I personally didn't really like prefolds for my infant. I thought they were time-consuming and I needed to change them ALL THE TIME (he hated being wet at all).
We really like the Fuzzi Buns pockets. They work well, wash well, and I got a lot used.
If you are on LiveJournal there is a cloth diapering community that's been a huge resource for me. People sell a lot of used diapers there, too. Also, there's a website www.diaperswappers.com -- more information and more used diapers for sale there!
Feel free to send me a message if you have more questions. I've been SO pleased with our decision to switch.

I have been cloth diapering my sons for exactly a year now. I lvoe it! I loved it so much that I started making my own about 7 months ago. Fleece is my favorite thing to use as a cover. I also make wool covers but I haven't personally used them. If you want, you could check out my store at http://cheekybum.etsy.com and FYI my bamboo prefolds are organic (not the embellishment fabric, obviously, but the bamboo and hemp I use is).

Good morning C..
I started c'ding my 18 month daughter about 2 months ago. I amazingly love it! I took a lot of trial and error to see what will work for us.
For this reason, I'd try a variety of styles- perhaps used. In my experience I hated prefolds but now they are my favorite and only effective night time solution (w/ a hemp doubler). I really like pocket diapers. I use FuzziBunz and BumGenius (all used) and love them.
Ideally I would buy/make pocket diapers with a good-quality fleece outer. I think they would be leak-resistent. I have a heavy night wetter. We have one pair of Malden Mills fleece pants and she can be soaking inside and dry outside. It's incredible!
Their's a local org that will loan you used cloth diapers. That's a great way to try a variety.I think it's teeniegreenies.org.
Hope this helpful info. Don't get discouraged if you hit bumps in the road. It is so rewarding when you get down a good routine.

I cloth diaper- my baby is allergic to paper. I love Disana wool covers- I also love their knitted nappis. You can find their wool covers at green mountain diapers.com. I have also enjoyed using a prefold in a fleece snap on cover.

I use prefolds with wool wraps at night. I use prefolds and fitteds with crocheted wool shorts or pants during the day. The rule of thumb is that if your properly lanolized wool leaks, it's because either the diaper underneath is not absorbent enough for your child, or you need to be changing the diaper more often. I have used fleece too, and if that starts leaking, a wash with the use of fabric softener will usually cure it.

I started using wool with my oldest because she had a rash that we couldn't get a handle on. Since wool is more breathable than the nylon or PUL covers, it really helped get that rash cleared up. I've been hooked ever since.

Here is my list of favorite covers and why. Check some of these out.
My Five Favorite Covers
I often get asked by my customers what is the best diaper cover for their baby. This isn’t that hard for me. I have tried them all and the following are my five favorites. What are yours?
Thirsties Cover

Thirsties Duo Wrap in Mango
The Thirsties cover is a modern day classic. Simple, economical, sturdy and reliable. It comes it dozens of wonderful colors and just doesn’t fail. They are very easy to care for and just go on forever. They work with all the different types of diapers in my stash…flats, prefolds, fitteds. Now, with the new Duo-Wrap by Thirsties they are an even better deal. The adjustable rise allows the diapers to stay in rotation twice as long. Your baby will not grow out of these for a ages.
Aristocrats

Aristocrat Wool Cover
What can you say about the Aristocrat Wool Cover other than it is the gold standard of wool covers. I is the perfect natural fiber for diaper covers. It is anti-microbial, breathable and absorbs up to 1/3 of its weight in liquid before it begins to feel wet. Properly lanolized, this cover just does not leak. Wonderful for overnights, an Aristocrat is also terrific for daytime. Want to a add a bit of whimsy to your cover? Dye it. Kool-Aid is my preferred type of dye but any will do. The Aristo must be part of every cloth diapering parent’s stash. A tad more expensive, certainly, but well worth every penny.
The Imse Vimse Wool Cover

Imse Vimse Wool Cover
I love the entire Imse Vimse line. Premium diapers materials coupled with excellent craftsmanship make this Swedish line one of my all time favorites. The Imse Vimse wool cover gives all the protection of wool but in a wrap format. A hybrid of the Aristo and Thirsties in many ways. Wonderful leak proof protection, breathable, simple to get on and off. A perfect cover.
The Mother-ease Cover

Mother-ease Air Flow Cover
The Air-Flow Snap Cover is a wonderful product by Mother-ease, a name we already associate with high-quality cloth diapers. The Air-Flow has a marvelous system of snaps that allows for air ventilation keeping the temperature down and reducing the risk of bacteria build up in the cover. When coupled with a Mother-ease one size or Sandy diaper, this provides a leak-proof diapering system. I especially love the new Eco-themed prints.
The Kozy Wool Soaker

Kozy Designs Wool Soaker
I love my Kozy Wool Soakers. They are fun, vibrantly colored wool covers that do not sacrifice absorbency despite their cute styles. They come in a range of sizes from soakers, to shorties to longies. Hand knit out of 100% Merino wool, these are wonderful day time wool covers for your baby.

I just wanted to throw in some more support for cloth diapering! My older sister swore I would give it up within a month, but my little one is now 13 months old, and I still love cloth diapers. My baby is sensitive to wool and fleece (and a million other things, including elastic and many disposable diapers), so I don't have good suggestions for those covers.

We started with pre-folds and a Bummis Whisper Wrap cover, then KissaLuvs (from Peapods in St. Paul) and the same cover, then Thirsties Fab Fitted and a Thirsties cover, and now Thirsties AIOs, BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers for overnight, and a few Twig and Vine AIOs (made in Mpls). Have loved different ones at different times. We thought the Twig and Vine ones leaked, but they haven't leaked since they've been through the dryer more.

Hooray for cloth diapers! Good luck.

i know you'll end up getting a million responses, but i'll add mine anyway! you'll find with covers that different size and shape babies fit differently into the covers. so some reviews either love or hate the cover, but you'll really just need to find the one that works for your baby...i'm also finding as my son is growing different covers work better than others at different times! wool covers will not leak. wool is a total barrier...but be warned...they're a pain to wash and VERY expensive. i have a few fleece ones for night time but have recently switched to a new cover that I LOVE! its called "wonder wrap". a bit pricier, but they expand to a bigger size as baby grows. these have been working great for us. but again you'll probably want to try out a few different covers before you really invest.
plus they grow so fast! my son is just 3months and hes almost in a medium cover!
the other thing i'd tell u is to look for a diaper service. if a simple prefold is all you plan to use they're perfect for it. we call it the diaper fairy...for $17 a week we put all the dirty diapers into a bag (don't even rinse!) and put it on the porch on tuesday night, by 9pm we have fresh ones for the week! its so awesome, totally cheaper than disposables, and i'm a working mom so gives me less work in the end...but all the benefits for my son! and cotton is a natural fiber so as far as making that organic in my life,(which i do a lot of) i've found its as close as i need to get for him. it beats the garbage in a disposable. if you're in the milwaukee area i can let you know of 2 companies that service here.
other covers that i like are the bummies and wonderwraps are my new favorite!
whatever you end up doing, best of luck. good job for committing to giving your baby the best and don't get frustrated if your first few tries spring leaks. like i said u need to find what fits your baby best. if you have any other questions i'd love to help so just let me know! good luck!
