Cleaning up That DOG-GONE MESS!?!?

We use Resolve Dual Power carpet spot cleaner and have a lot of success with that. I've used it on animal messes and kid messes. Seems to work great. Good luck!

I use Petzyme. I've also used it on kid messes and spilled food - it even worked on tomato paste! You've got to scrub up as much of the solids as you can and blot it as dry as possible, then really soak it with the Petzyme. Let it dry completely, then vacuum or brush the carpet so it looks nice. I get mine at Petco, but I'm sure it's sold a lot of other places, too.

I found the best stuff and Its worked ons ome of the worst "messes" at target either in the cleaning isle or the pet isle is this spray called "complete with oxyclean, orange" it works wonders, I did have to rent ($30) a cleaner from kingssoopers to help with the worst mess and I can't even tell it was ever there, I just added a little of that stuff to the clean water on the machine and it was amazing,pretreat first

Two words: Nature's Miracle. You can get it at Pet Stores. It's a bit pricey but worth every penny. For old stains, you may need to get a pro carpet cleaner to come in - again pricey, but worth the money if nothing else works. Some companies have a special product for pet problem areas. But for most instances, I find that Nature's Miracle takes stains and smells away. We have dogs and cats so we keep the company in business!

I think the baking soda is really mostly to get the smell out. I usually clean up my dog messes by wiping up as much as I can, pouring water on it and blotting it, then after getting most of the water out, I sprinkle baking soda all over the spot and let it sit for a couple hours, then just vacuum it up. Sometimes I've had to repeat this a few times to get the smell out.

Hi M., we have two dogs as well. I know EXACTLY what you mean! We went YEARS without having a really good cleaner. We finally found something that works wonderfully!!! It's called the BISSELL LITTLE GREEN MACHINE. It comes with it's own special cleaner and it's fantastic! We have got our money's worth out of it. We have had it for over a year and it has been a lifsaver. We also have a two-year-old boy, so it's nice to have around for his little (or big) messes also. Good luck! Oh, we bought ours at Wal*Mart for about $50. It sounds like a lot, but if you want something that REALLY works then it is very, very worth it.

The BEST thing to use on any pet stain (or even a human 'bodily fluid" stain) is the enzyme solutions sold at pet supply stores or in the pet sections of Target and Walmart. Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover is the one I use and it works wonders. Removes the stain and the smell. Saturate the spots well. Might not get out old stains that have been treated with other things already, but should get the smell out at least. Definitely get some and have it on hand for the future. Good luck!

Try Nature's Miracle. You may need to let it sit for a while but it should work on both the stain and smell.

Try Folex. It's the ONLY thing I've found that really seems to get tough stains up. I have an 11 month old puppy (eats EVERYTHING) and an 18 year old cat (major hairballs) so I am constantly cleaning up messes. It works best if you just clean the stain with cold water and blot a bunch, then follow the directions on the bottle. It even works wonders on old stains. I've used it on spots that have been around for years and it lifted the grime out. Not very expensive either. I've found it at Safeway, Lowe's and Home Depot. Good luck!

I recently tried, and loved, a cleaner from a company called Advanage. It's pricey, but works wonders, it even got ooooolllldd kool-aid stains out of my carpet. I don't know how it handles smells, but for stains, it's great.

This is the only thing that has worked for me to get out the smell and stuff, Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover. You can find it at Petco and/or Petsmart and it's safe around kids and pets. I actually use it more often to trow into the washer with the laundry soap to get out the OOPS potty smell out of the kid's clothes and bedding. Good luck.

I had the exact same problem. I went to a carpet store and asked for a professional stain remover. I got the Premium Capture Carpet Cleaning System. It has a spray you apply first then a powder that goes over the spray. You let it sit for 30 minutes then vacuum it up. It works like a charm and is gentle on carpets, can even be used on wool. You do need to vacuum for a long time to get all of the powder up. I freaked out the first time because all the powder didn't come up and it looked like it bleached the carpet. However after it dried completely I was able to vacuum it all up and the carpet looked good as new.

It worked on a dried stain (I think pee) as well.

I completely agree with Janie on the Bissle Little Green Machine, it's wonderful! We have four dogs and this thing has become my best friend recently. It' seems every couple of days I'm cleaning up an accident or throw up (they love to eat grass!) Like she said, it can be a little costly when you first get it, but it's soo user friendly and just nice to have around for all those little messes.

So, I wasn't going to answer, but it seems no one answered your direct question about baking soda.
We just got a 10-mo old dog from the shelter - been doing LOTS of clean up while house training.
After blotting everything you can, sprinkle w/baking soda (I use a large salt shaker). Many times I let it sit for a few minutes. Then apply straight vinegar - I use a watering can to direct while minimizing how much goes down. It'll foam up (remember making volcanoes this way?). Then blot up again. For old stains or smells, I'll let the baking soda sit for up to a few hours before applying the vinegar.
This has gotten almost all pet messes up for me (including the old lady (12 year old dog) that pukes every couple months). Personally, I think baking soda and vinegar works better than Nature's Miracle (used to be my favorite for pets). and you can't beat the price - 80 cents for a box of soda and 2 bucks for a gallon of vinegar!
But, I'll second many of the answers below - sometimes you just can't beat a professional. I had a friend that couldn't get rid of cat smell - hired a professional and not only does it smell good - the cat hasn't hit that spot again!

We have two large German Shepherds and I won't even get into the horror stories of messes we have had to clean up after them. Luckily they are now well trained, but boy did we have some issues...So here is what I have found. We used First Impressions for our carpet cleaning. For the life of me I can't find their number right now, but if you can find them I totally recommend them.

Other than that I have tried a little bit of laundry detergent mixed with some water when I ran out of carpet cleaner. I've tried a steam cleaner along with the scrubbing and a foam cleaner. I also make sure that I "pat" the area clean as much as possible before I try scrubbing as scrubbing can push the stain further into the carpet. I even stand on the towel, or whatever I'm using, to try to absorb as much as possible first. We've also tried the rug doctor from the grocery store, but it didn't do as good of a job as the professional cleaner.

Something I just recently tried that worked very well on getting cat puke out of beige berber carpet was hydrogen peroxide! A nurse at our local clinic told me to try this on a blood stain on clothing and that worked too! Its super cheap and worked great!

yes you first blot up as much urine as possible and then rinse the area with warm water and blot again. Then for a vinegar safe rug, mix 1/2 Cup of distilled white vinegar with a 1/2 cup of water and sponge it into the fibers after a few minutes blot up and pour on a thick layer of table salt the more the better. let it dry over night and vacuum over the area next day no more spells.

I made a concoction that works, my friends call it Doggie WMD. My female shephard mix pees like no other dog on the world apparently because it still smells months later if I don't clean it ALL up. I've tried the UrineBGone, Nature's Miracle & a few other things... no luck.
STAND OVER THE SINK FOR THIS!
I used a 16 oz pour lid bottle (not spray), put about 2TBSP baking soda in the bottom of it, maybe 2 oz of Oxyclean gel (the trigger bottle in the laundry treating aisle-just poured from the bottle top), 6 oz vinegar (it'll foam like a science experiment at this point), & the rest hot tap water til the bottle's full. I poured it over the stain to cover it all, swished it around w/my hand (wear rubber gloves if that bothers you), let it set about 30 mins & got the steam cleaner out. I kept pouring hot tap water on it w/a pitcher (pours faster than the steam cleaner spray) & sucking it up til I wasn't pulling soap up anymore. It got rid of her smelly stains & we even passed the sniff test in a military housing inspection (they sniff on hands & knees & then bring in a black light)
In the future, try just using straight hot water in your steam cleaner instead of any kind of cleaner. I have a carpet cleaner friend who suggested that-makes it easier for professional cleaners to lift stains you just can't get too, if it's just treated w/water. Hot hot water & suck ssssssllllllooooowwwwwlllllyyy (you could take a nap in the amout of time it takes to clean a decent sized living room if you're sucking at the right speed-a friend's cleaner has a "speedometer" on it). I've been using vinegar on the really bad stains, but most come up w/straight water, even old pink lemonade in apt tan carpet.

We used a professional carpet cleaner in the area and he can spot treat. Name is All Clean Idaho, you can find them in the phone book. Their minimum is 80$ for a call, but he can spot treat and has gotten out all of our dog and kid messes, even black regurgitated charcoal, it was worth the money.

Have you heard of Melaleuca? They make a product called Sol-U-Mel. It removes everything!! You don't have to be a "member" to order it. Go to http://www.melaleuca.com/.

I use a Bella bar to get carpet stains up in my home. My husband has a problem with overfilling his drinks! It works GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone. Good luck!
