Cleaning Sunscreen from Our Mattress

Hello Ladies! Yesterday my daughter was in our room quietly playing while I washed dishes. She came running into the kitchen, asking me to open a bottle of lotion because she couldn't get it open. Her hair was slick and all you could smell was lotion. I went back into our room and in the middle of our bed was 3 bottles of lotion that she had gotten from her shelf, and a bottle of sunscreen. All were open and there was a huge, sticky smear of white all over the middle of our bed. Turns out it was mostly the sunscreen. After giving her a bath, I removed the sheets and had to wash them three times to get them clean. The mattress was also wet. I blotted up as much as I could, then saturated a dish towel with Dawn and hot water and went to scrubbing. After it dried it is still slick feeling and leaves a residue of sunscreen on your hand.

How do I get the sunscreen out of our mattress? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

You might try a paste of baking soda and water. the grit in baking soda is a great cleaner. Oxyclean is another good one. Walmart carries it. I use that in everything from carpets to laundry. Works great. Spot shot is a good spot cleaner. I have used that on carpets and clothes. It comes in a orange and blue spray can by the rug cleaners. Walmart carries. it. Good luck.

Try using the upholstery attachment to a carpet cleaner. I used this once to get Vaseline out of our mattress. It worked pretty good, ( I had to clean it 3 times I think).

Erk, I bet Johnson & Johnson would Loove to hear from you. You could make a commercial outta that. Aren't kids so cute! :} They would also be able to tell you what the best type of cleaner would be to break up those oils...

K., Try some baby powder....It may help soak up some of the oils that are in sunscreen. I have heard that powder helps remove alot of stains....Good luck...

Also, what type of consulting are you going to be doing?? I am looking for extra income, and I am always looking at different resources...... Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks, J.

When we bought our new mattress, we bought the cleaning kit that the store sold. We haven't used it yet, but I'm sure we'll have to at some point! You might try seeing if any local mattress stores have any cleaners. We got ours at Denver Mattress.

Have you tried corn starch? I don't know if it will work or not, but it might!

What kind of consultant are you thinking of becoming? I know a great kind!
