Cleaning Hands After Dying Easter Eggs

Hi Moms,

Last year my girls stuck their hands in the Easter egg dye while attempting to dye their eggs, resulting in black and blue dyed hands for a few days. My mom, who lives out of town, really wants us to dye eggs with her, but it will have to be done the night before Easter. I am a little nervous that my girls hands will end up looking like monster hands the next day for pictures. Does anyone have a good solution of getting the dye off of hands? (We do try to use the gadgets to put the eggs in and out of the containers, but in the fun and excitement my three year old can't get the hang of it and just puts her whole hand into the dye!) Thanks so much for your time! Have a great weekend! A.

What can I do next?

I work with toner and ink all the time. To clean my hands from black ink or toner I use a waterless hand sanitizer. It doesn't say it takes off ink; but it works great. I bought my small bottle from Dillons. Good luck. Oh a trick on the eggs is if you use a crayola to draw on the egg the wax stops the dye from covering that area. So you can write their names, draw a cross, or bunny and it will show up when you dye the egg. Didn't know if you knew this; but my kids used to love doing this.

You've had a lot of good suggestions, was just going to make an addition to the rubber gloves, to make it maybe a little more fun you can always find the barbie gardening gloves that are mostly rubber on the fingers and some cloth up around the wrists. They might like wearing those more than regular rubber gloves and they are something you can keep around. Might be a bulk factor though... so getting in and out of cups might be hard.

Best of luck!!

Good Morning A., I have know idea, I was thinking maybe some lotion on the hands first or something. But then it would get on the eggs and maybe not color on those spots.
Wet wipes do pretty good taking off markers on skin, and the orange color from Cheetos. I don't remember the boys or gr kids getting dye on their hands though. So I am lost here. Maybe a little Simple Green on a paper towel would help?

Use a reg serving spoon in the egg dye cups or bowls. It's a lot easy to manage the egg's. OR just get some Easter stickers to put on the eggs, they can still be pretty and festive.

God Bless all of you and Have a Wonderful Easter SONday

Hi! If you think about it, try putting hand lotion or vaseline on their hands before dying the eggs. It keeps the water/dye from soaking in. I've also discovered that baby wipes take stains off lots of things, so they may be helpful, too. Good luck!

GOOP cleaner is good (automotive dept but very mild) and a brush!, but I'd get rubber gloves from the painting dept of walmart, lowes, etc. and make them wear those!

Haven't tried it yet, but supposedly rubbing baking soda on and rinsing helps get it off.

Good Luck!

Have you thought about using latex gloves on their hands? As long as they aren't irritated by latex, that could work to keep the dye off the hands in the first place.

As far as getting it off the hands...I have never found anything that works. If you do, or someone else does...please let me know too!

Good luck and have a wonderful Easter!

rubbing alcohol got it off for my daughter but you may need acetone for their nails. Be sure to be care with both, don't let them rub their eyes until they've washed their hands well and removed the alcohol/acetone. Good luck, sounds fun!

Maybe you can have your girls where surgical type gloves (if they will keep them on).

I've never tried it, but maybe try putting some hair conditioner or the "thick lotion type" of baby sunscreen on their hands about 15 minutes before dying eggs...rub it in like lotion, and then just towel it off (so their hands aren't slimy)...thinking that maybe if the conditioner (or sunscreen?) absorbs in a bit, it will be less "porous" for the dye to set in the skin?
Just a thought! Let us know! I'm curious!

I didn't get this post until Easter Day so it may not help for this year; however, it may help in the future! Have you kids wear latex gloves while they dye the eggs (You can make them fit securely by placing a rubber band or ponytail holder aroung the wrist (make sure it is not too tight though). Good luck and happy future egg dyeing!

How about trying to do it with rubber gloves on? Walmart sells them.

One thing that I might suggest too is have them wear some old shirts over their clothes. That way there nice clothes won't get ruined. Also, put down newspapers or wax paper when dying eggs. This will protect any spills. Have fun decorating eggs. The fun part is hunting them. My little two year old Gracie Carol is having a great Easter!
