Cleaning Dry Pee Out of a Mattress

My husband discovered my son peed his bed early the other morning. Instead of telling me, or cleaning it himself (He was running late to work) he flipped the mattress over and put a sheet on the other side for my son to sleep on.

So, now he tells me almost 2 days later, (the whole times I was trying to find the source of the pee smell but couldn't since the beds were dry!), but the pee is all dry and seeped inside the mattress now. Anyway to get it actually clean?

I've read you can put it out in the sun and that will help, anything else aside from soaking it with cleaner?

What can I do next?

Nature's Miracle. You get it at the pet store but you don't have to tell your baby that. It works for pet mistakes and it works for people mistakes, too.

That's funny you ask this... I just took my son's mattress off yesterday and cleaned it. Our pee wasn't dry yet, but here's what I did... I mixed a solution of vinegar water in a spray bottle, probably about 3 parts water, 1 part vinegar. I doused the pee area, then used some bath towels to soak up as much as I could get out. I have read that vinegar will neutralize the smell of pee. I just kept walking on the towels on the mattress, and it did seem that I soaked a lot of the liquid out. I know you'll never really get all of the pee out, but we do the best we can... If you have one, you might try pulling the liquid out with a chamois, or the faux chamois yellow cloth things. That might work well to pull out some of the pee/liquid. After that, I sprayed it again with an Oxyclean spray, and soaked up as much as I could again. Then I let it bask in the hot sun all day, and took it back in when the sun went down. I have to say, by the time it dried, I could not detect any pee/vinegar smell at all.

I've read other posts where people were dealing with pee stuff, and there is apparently some pet pee cleaner, called Miracle something or other, that you can buy at pet stores, and it apparently works wonders too, on neutralizing/removing pee stains/odors.

Sol U Mel. It is a stain and odor remover.

Lee's response is probably the most likely to remove the urine completely with a few modifications.

We have both a cat and dog who are getting older, and we're constantly having to clean-up something from the carpet, etc. Or, we'll find a sippy cup of milk upside down that's leaked for a few days on the sofa.

We swear by this method. Use whatever cleaner you think is best (vinegar, Nature's Miracle, etc), and put several layers of clean towels on top. Put a heavy object on top of the stain and leave it there for up to 24 hours. The towels act like a wick and pull the urine and cleaner out of the fabric.

However, the MOST important step is to let the mattress dry fully before remaking it with a sheet. If not, the heat and humidity in your local area will make it a breeding ground for mold/mildew. Take a fan, put it in the room, and when the spot is fully dry, go back to life as normal.

Good luck!

Vinegar.......if you can soak it in vinegar and water, maybe rinse it with the hose.....that should work and then put it out side to dry........If you use Melaleuca products, sol-u-mel is the best.....and it takes care of about anything.....

Bad hubby, I'd make him clean it!!!

Good Luck and take care.
