Cleaning Bottles - Galesburg,IL
We use Dr. Brown's bottles and clean them each evening in the dishwasher. My biggest complaint about using bottles (and I remember having this problem 3 yrs ago with my first-born) is that the nipples always look cloudy and spotty after cleaning them. And after using them for a few months are discolored and no longer clear and shiny. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a special rinse-aid, clean them by hand or replace them frequently or does that just happen with silicone nipples?

I've been hand washing my Dr. Brown bottles for 10 months now and they look brand new - I bet it has something to do with the dishwasher. I ran mine through the dishwasher once and they looked just as bad as when I put them in...I do know that if you're not satisfied with them, email Dr. Brown site and tell them that. They'll replace them free of charge.

I second the vinegar! We did this with our bottles and it helped a lot. You can either boil them with a little vinegar, or put some in the dishwasher. Good luck!

I don't know if this will help you but we found out with our first one 3 1/2 years ago that we need to alternate. One time we put the bottles in the dishwasher on the really hot setting to sterilize them and the next time we wash them by hand to get them really clean. Our nipples don't turn yellow that way. However, if you are using the same nipples that you used with your first...that could be why. The nipples from our bottles from the first were all yellow from sitting over time so we got new ones.

I usually just hand-wash the nipples. I think if you hand wash them for a while they will probably go back to clear.

I always had that problem with my playtex nipples as well. I just ended up putting the bottles in the dishwasher (we used the ones with the liners) and hand washing all the nipples.

I don't know how to fix it, but the same thing happens to my nipples (I use Medela) after they've been used about 3 or 4 times, and I wash them by hand!

Could be that it is just time to replace them. I read that you are supposed to replace nipples every 3 months or so....We used ours for almost a year and they were still okay but I did notice they were becoming cloudy after 9 months or so. I tried different cleaners and we don't have a dishwasher so they were always washed by hand. I'm pretty sure it was just that the silicone was too worn. I even boiled them and steamed them in the microwave and nothing changed
