Tomato juice.
It's an old household remedy and I've never had to use it, but I've been told it works.
When I was in Middle School one of my best friends' little brother got sprayed by a skunk and they had to soak him in tomato juice to get the smell off.
It worked!

As a loyal Heloise reader, I would recommend washing her hair and then rinsing it with vinegar. Vinegar will take away bad odors from other things very well. It won't hurt her hair, but will make it squeaky clean. I hope that does it.

Maybe try tomato juice??? I know that it works well for skunk smell--So maybe it will work for vomit.

This may sound weird but I would put a bit of ketchup in her hair--watch the eyes of course when washing out. I worked at a restaurant and that is how we solved almost all smell issues.

Vinegar is really good to neutralize the smell. Works on people and materials also.

Baking soda does the trick. Wet the hair, sprinkle in baking soda, thouroghly massage the hair so that the baking soda gets coated on all the hair. Wash out with regular shampoo and the smell should be gone. Good luck.

try rinsing it with white vinegar. It is actually very good for your hair and leaves it very shiny.

I use some great products that would get the smell out. THey would also get the stains/smell out of carpet, sheets, etc. They don't have any toxins/chemicals in them so they are safe too!!

I have 3 suggestions all of which are "old hints" but not sure if they work...but worth a try. I heard years ago that if you were ever out camping or lived in the country and accidently got sprayed by a skunk or if your dog/cat did, to wash them in Tomato Juice. Supposedly, the acidity from the tomatoes does a nice job deoderizing the hair/skin. And, I've also heard similar things about Buttermilk and separately about Lemon Juice. So, again, in feeling empathy for your situation, I thought I'd share these old rumors to be helpful and I truly HOPE they do help you. I know what it is like when your child is vomiting over and over and you only have a few minutes between each bout to clean them up and the area up and prepare again. Bless you. Love & Prayers - L.

How to Get Vomit Smell out of Hair
If someone has thrown up in your hair or if you have thrown up on your own hair yourself, you may have realized that the stench is hard to get out. Here's advice from experience.

Wash very thoroughly with shampoo. Scrub hard and leave the shampoo in for a few minutes, then rinse and repeat if the smell is still there. This may be all you have to do.
Mix some baking soda in with your shampoo if #1 by itself is not effective. Just pour your normal amount of shampoo into your palm and pour some baking soda in and rub your hands together. The amount of baking soda is not exact, maybe around half the portion of shampoo used. Wash your hair with this mixture, leave it in for a few minutes, and rinse.
Make a paste of water and baking soda to put in your hair. Pour a liberal amount of baking soda in a bowl and add water very slowly while mixing the substance until the texture is like a thick paste. Apply this to your hair and put a shower cap over it, then leave it in for at least a few minutes or even overnight. Depending on the extremity of your case, leaving it in longer might be a good idea, but just a few minutes can work too.
Rinse the paste out after the desired amount of time, then wash one last time with the shampoo and baking soda mixture from step #2.
If you normally use conditioner, go ahead and use it after the process. It might even make your hair smell better. Hopefully your hair no longer reeks of vomit!

TipsWash your hair as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the harder it is to get the vomit out as it gets very crusty.
If the above procedures do not prove effective for you, you can also try using tomato juice/puree or vinegar. Just put either substance in your hair, leave in for a while, and rinse.
Since the smell of vomit could simply be stuck in your nose, or because your hair may smell in the back where you cannot smell it yourself, ask someone else to smell your hair for you.

go online to naturalgroomer.com, yes it is a dog shampoo but all natural and completely safe for humans. The royal chrysanthemum shampoo is great for getting out any bad smells in the hair, and is herbal and will make her hair shine!

FYI -
My doctor recommended vinegar for my son because he had a dry/scaly scalp and he said that would help with that. Well, I don't know if my son didn't like the smell of the vinegar or if he didn't like it because it was cold. But, he FREAKED OUT about it. I had trouble giving him a bath for a year after using vinegar on him. So, be wary of that.

I know would try a little white vinegar and water rinse. It's great for getting rid of odors. leave it and let it air dry.

Maybe tomato juice? That is what you bathe a dog in when they get sprayed by a skunk. (NOT saying that your daughter is equivalent to a skunk... just that it works!) :)

Hi J., I've been a hairdresser for 36 yrs & come from a huge family with lots of girls. Put white vinegar or beer in her dry hair,towel dry it then let it dry naturally or blow it dry then shampoo it like you always do, the smell of the vinegar or beer will evaporate. It will also make her hair shine like cornsilk.

I don't know if it will work, but you might try putting a little bit of baking soda with her shampoo when you wash her hair. I use it sometimes when my hair seems to be oily and it helps with that. Baking soda is supposed to take odors away, so it might help. Good luck!

Comb in vinegar. TRY TO LEAVE IN AWHILE. DO THIS ON A DAY YOU ARE HOME FOR THE DAY. WASH OUT LATER.

Try adding baking soda to her bath and also when you shampoo, add a generous amount to her hair while the shampoo is still on there. It is perfectly safe and won't even dry her skin or hair. It is a very good deodorant and also very soothing if a child has a rash.(added to bath water) Hairdressers add baking soda to shampoo to remove excess hairspray, styling stuff etc. If the soda doesn't work try rinsing with clear water with a little vinegar added. If it doesn't work, at least it will leave a pretty shine on her hair. Good luck. J. C.

Try using a chelating, or clarifying shampoo. They remove mineral deposits and build up so it might work for your daughters hair. They are also great for removing chlorine if your kids do a lot of swimming over the summer. Hope this helps.

So glad the age your children are you are staying home with them, the time goes so quickly and you would miss so much. Now for the hair-- I'm not sure, but try after shampoo to rince with baking soda, if that doesn't work, try deluted vinigar water. I have heard that tomato juice gets skunk smell out, and although this is WAY different, if the other two remedys don't work you could try it. Then of course your child may get tired of having to shampoo again. Good luck.

I went to the web to see if anything could make sense about what might get the smell out and I really think baking soda might do the trick. I would make a paste with a little water and work it into the area. The only other thing that looks promising, but smelly is vinegar and then rewash with shampoo then a great smelling conditioner. I really hope you get some great advise.

tomato juice! I say this because I've heard that if your dog
gets sprayed by a skunk the best thing to do is to wash the dog's hair in tomato juice, & just figured if tomato juice
is recommended for that, it might just work on your child's

Dilute some viegar in water - 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. That should take care of it for you.

Baking soda is also a good odor eater.

Yes - use a mixture of vinegar and water. Maybe 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. (1/4 vinegar). Rinse her hair with this a couple of times.
Rinse out with plain water and use conditioner as it will be harder to get the tangles out due to the acidity of the vinegar. (It is not harmful at all to her skin or scalp, so don't worry.)
