Classroom Valentine's Day Activities

My neighbor called and said she has the flu. Since our children are in the same class at school, she was wondering if I would be willing to take over the Valentine's Day party. I couldn't say no. She had planned to do a cake walk, but hadn't made the circles yet so I will make those tomorrow. She was planning on letting the children decorate paper bags to put their Valetines in. There are 26 children in the class. I need 3 or 4 groups of children each doing an activity. So i have two, any ideas for two more? I don't get paid until the day after Valentines so they need to be inexpensive and easy for 5th graders to do in 5-7 minutes.
I've looked on Pinterest but really didn't see anything that I thought would be interesting for 5th graders. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Do a classroom game (boys hate crafts!).

1.Cut out hearts from construction paper.
Zig zag cut each heart in half.
On each half of the pairs, write O. of famous "pairs" ( peanut butter & jelly, Bonnie & Clyde, salt & pepper, etc.) the hand out the halves & have them find their mate!

2. Make half page "forms" on the computer.
Start the poem for them:
Roses are _______,
Violets are__________,
____________________
And _________________!

Have each student (or team) do a poem.
(If they do individually, they can be for someone at home.)

3. Find a Valentines word search online & print out 26 copies.

4. Do you have a magnetic dartboard? Tape a heart in the bullseye!

All cheap (or free) and easy & fun.

Good luck!

Play conversation hearts BINGO. In place of numbers, pop open a bag of hearts and start filling in a table in Word or Excel with all the things the hearts say. Then randomize it so each card is different. From there, you pull out a heart of each saying and then they get a small package of hearts of their own and play bingo to win maybe a box of conversation hearts. Or don't give them hearts, use square cutouts. Since they will be in groups of 3 or 4, you don't need many of the cards and it's just a quick Bingo game to see who wins the candy.

Another option besides paper bags which may be cheaper is to use white paper plates (cheap kind) and fold two and place them over each other and that makes a heart. Decorate and fill to their heart's content.

Maybe 1 group could work on a compliment book about their fellow classmates. Have each person in the class listed, and the group comes up with 1-2 compliments about each person in the class. It would be a nice thing for the teacher to be able to keep later, too.

ETA: Another thing that all the kids could do: Have each kid write 1 or 2 things about themselves that they dont think the other kids know. Put them all in a hat, draw them out and guess who they are about. Kinda a cool way to get all the kids to open up, which is oftentimes very difficult for introverted kids.

Maybe get some old magazines and have them make collages with words about their classmates like the other poster said, or nice pictures that remind them of their friends? You can paste the cut outs in the book the other poster mentioned? I dont know just a thought!

Heart-and-Lollipop Flowers
With just a little TLC, colorful hearts flourish as the petals of a new flower variety --one with a lollipop center and stem.

1. Use card stock to make a half-heart template about 3 inches high and 1 1/4 inches wide. Fold a 12-by-3 1/2-inch piece of construction paper in half vertically, and trace four half-hearts along the fold.

2. Cut out hearts; unfold.

3. Stack hearts; punch a hole 1/4 inch up from bottom. Position petals to form a flower, making sure holes line up. Secure by applying glue around holes; let dry. Write name on a petal. Insert lollipop.

There were a couple of cute ideas in this article (I thought bending the paper clip into a heart was cute and could make a good bookmark):

Have a contest to see who can make the most real words using the letters from "happy valentines day".

Do your version of minute to win it. How many hearts can a team cut in one minute. How many candies can you stack in one minute. How many times can you recite roses are red poem in one minute. The more active and fun the idea, the more they will enjoy it.

A three legged race perhaps.

A mad libs valentine edition ( could probably find one online or make your own).

Hope this helps and you have fun at the party!
