Previously I'd asked for what you ladies thought about giving a 12 year old cash. I've found out he wanted a XBox 360. I purchased the XBox, but now looking for fun scavenger hunt ideas to have him locate it. There were some ideas in my last request, but if any of you ladies have any other ideas on how to hide, where to hide, and WHAT to hide, I'd really appreciate some input. On my short list of things to purchase for the hunt so far are: "coal" bubble gum, some gold dollar coins, and some "cookie jars". He loves to cook!

What can I do next?

That sounds like so much fun! Every year my sister does a scavenger hunt for the kids. She puts clues on 3x5 cards and each clue takes them to the next. The kids (and adults too) LOVE IT!

She also has a craft for kids (and adults who are interested). It is usually something simple but that can be personalized (i.e. ornament, graham cracker house, sugar cube house).

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

placing clues is cool. my mom did this one year when we got a trampoline. She waited until all the gifts were done and placed a clue in each of our stockings. I had to go find a clue, mine was a spring. My sister went and got her clue and it was another spring. My brother got his and it was a note in a Spice Girls CD case that led us to the garage where the Tramp was waiting for us-- minus two springs of course. It was fun and we were so excited!

Make the clues and places VERY questionable....in other words....NOT obvious at all (like in the computer room or near the computer). Clothes hamper, drawers, pantry, shoes, coat sleeve, under a rug, in a book, etc. This will increase the suspense. You could even FINISH in the shoe box with a big X in it but he HAS TO TURN AROUND 360 degrees before he opens it. See if he can "solve the puzzle".

you can make it fun by placing notes in a empty box first like here is the first clue to you surprise if you really want to find your gift , it makes the home go from cold and warm.... and let him think it out and the first clue would be near the theromstat . and then the next clue could be like here is your second clue >. now your warmmer you see hint two ,I will be place in a drawer to keep things cold and that would be ..placed in a drawer in the frig, and just keep going till he can find the gift where ever you hide it . it is kind of fun and they kids really like it . and have his gift hidden somewhere beside the christmas tree, maybe under a table or a bed . good luck

We actually did the same thing last year for my brother (who is 30+ years old!) when we gave him a PS3. He has ALWAYS gone way out of his way to make the holidays special for everyone and we wanted to do something special for him. We had clues in many various places. Indoor, outdoor, you name it. I made up little rhymes for the clues to lead him to the next until he finally found his PS3. He was so surprised. I must admit we were quite surprised too when at the opening of the very first clue my big, tough brother began to cry because he could tell we went to a lot of trouble to make his special gift extra special. I hope all goes well as you reveal your special gift. :)

Maybe you could do somthing like this.....
open up the xbox and take things out of it like the cords, directions etc...put those around for him to find with clues on what the "present" could be. for the second to last clue you can put either a game you bought or a controller so he gets real excited in anticipation of getting the actual xbox.
fyi-we love xbox in my family, a great game suggestion for fun family time is rock band. YOu can purchase a guitar, drum set and microphone together or separte and you actually play in a rock band. They have other music available other than "rock," such as pop and disney. It's so fun, on thanksgiving we played it for 6 hours!! Good family time.

I'd start with small stuff like you said then as he gets closer to the Xbox get some accessiories- a controller, a game, an xbox t-shirt- that would really get him excited- as for hiding places, kitchen cabinets, the bath tub, his underware drawer, you could leave clues with each gift or take a picture of the next location to lead him through the house- you could even keep the xbox hidden and while he's on his hunt sneak it under the tree and have the hunt end there- it will be alot of fun- my mom did it for me once and my sister and I got new bikes hidden in the basement- Merry Christmas!!
