Choking/CPR....

Did you ever choke on something, as an adult or child? Do you know the heimlich manuver on children, babies, and adults? Do you know infant/child/adult CPR? Share your stories...

I remember choking on a penny as a toddler, and ironically enough, choked on a lifesaver candy. Both times my dad (ex helicopter paramedic) had to give me the heimlich.

My middle child, when she was about 2, choked on a mentos candy. Had to pull over in the middle of a divided highway (shoulder was closed), ripped her out and flipped her upside down and do the heimlich with traffic passing on both sides. WHOA. This was in the car, on my birthday too.

Do you know how to do the heimlich on yourself as well?

I know the heimlich and CPR... I was an EMT for quite some time. After asking the grape question, I was just wondering how many people would honestly know what to do in case they were ever in the situation that their child was choking or not breathing. Keep in mind, CPR is very different for all age groups, same with the heimlich...

What can I do next?

I try to take a refresh class every year. I wish that everyone would. Most local hospitals offer the class for cheap.

I am certified annually -- part of first responder team at my employer. I have been certified since I worked in an ECU at 18. I made my hubby take infant/child CPR and they cover the Heimlich or thrusts or whatever they call it now that the Heimlich family tried to sue for royalties on use of the family name :P I plan to have him repeat it when our new au pair arrives in August -- with her. We have practiced on a cabbage patch at home in the interim to make him feel more comfortable.

I have choked as an adult and I did the Heimlich over the back of a chair to dislodge the food myself. Luckily (*knock on wood*) haven't yet had to use any of the other things I know -- at work or home.

Yes! Certified too! You are right, it is different for all ages and that is VERY important for people to understand. You and NOT put an infant on the ground and do chest compressions with your palm, etc, etc, etc. The other thing is the CPR way keeps changing. From breaths and compression numbers to no breaths and compression. They keep finding different ways to do it that will continue to save peoples lives!

Everyone should just take the time to learn!

I have had first aid classes and learned CPR/ Heimlich in the past. The childbirth class at our hospital offer infant CPR/ first aid as part of the course. I choked on a slice (sliced the round way- like a coin) of raw carrot in a salad when I was 19. I managed to do the Heimlich on myself to the point where the carrot turned sideways so I could breathe. I still had to go to the hospital to get it removed (it was very painful).
Many hospitals and Red Cross chapters offer the classes for free or at a very low cost.

It's been a long time since I've been officially certified in CPR or the Heimlich. But I've had some near scares with my kids, been able to keep my head enough to figure out what needed doing (thankfully, nothing too dramatic), and I do keep up on learning ... just nothing official.

As a teacher, I had to be CPR and First Aid certified. So, yes, I am prepared if I have to be. I have had to do the heimlich twice on my oldest and once with my youngest. 2 of the 3 times were at a family gathering where they were eating food they don't normally eat. The other time was a hard mint with my oldest, I think he was sucking on it and it slid down his throat.
All scary, but I was right there and jumped into action.

Yes I know the various CPR & heimlich manuvers. I use to be a life guard when younger which I am thankful for because it trained me well to be a mom as well as work with young kids and at a venue that has hundred of people going through it everyday.

I am no longer certified but have been looking into the classes offered in my area for one that works with my schedule. I think it is very important for all parents and really anyone to at least learn it at some point in their life, maybe in not fully certified, but educated in these important life saving techniques.

I also think that know how to use a difibrillator is very important if your work has one. I have saved two people using one, even the EMT said that if we had not used them morethenlikely the person would not have madeit, and very glad I took classes so I felt completely comfrotable using them. They are "dummy" proof, very easy to use just good to fimilar with them if you have them at work.

Everyone should know this! It's beyond valuable. Also, Molly B. mentioned getting a refresher course each year, which is essential because the guidelines are ever changing.

I had to do infant heimlich on my son after he decided that rocks were yummy. We were in the garden, I saw him choking, flipped him over and got the rock out. Since I have had extensive training, it didn't even faze me.

Does anyone know how to use the defibrillators that are hanging in public places such as shopping malls? It's pretty easy but it's nice to have some practice in the event of a real emergency!

Great question, R.! I hope that you inspired people to take CPR/ first aid classes!
