I am wondering what might be some good remedies for a child with a cough...other than medications? My son is 7 and coughing at night a ton. I had him to the dr. today, but wasn't given much for advice.

What can I do next?

C., I use a cool mist humidifier, Vick's vapor rub on chest, back and feet (with socks on), and Hyland's Honey Cough Syrup. There are also some homeopathic tablets you can ask for at Whole Foods or Sprouts that help with coughing. Good Luck!

before bed put Vicks Vapor rub on his feet and then put socks on. I know that it sounds weird but it works.

My family's always used a teaspoon of honey and jemon juice together. I use it with my son. So as long as he's not allergic to honey, you might want to try that. I'm not really sure why it works. But it really does. Hope it works for you!

My kdis pediatrician had an aritcle pinned up in his office about using honey as a cough remedy. The article said it worked better than tradition cough suppressants. I tried it my my kids and myself and I did think it worked better. Just use a few teaspoons of straight honey or mix it into some warm water. The darker the honey the better it works.

I'd look into honey and see what you can find out. I've read quite a bit in the last couple of years about honey being as effective or more effective as a cough suppresent than any medications you can buy over the counter. Since your son is older, you wouldn't have to worry about some of the risk associated with giving honey to very young children. I've tried this with my daughter, who was about 8 at the time, and while she complained about the honey (she doesn't like it) I did find that it cut down on the coughing without any weird side effects (unless you count the complaining :)

Make sure you change your ac filters in the house every 2 or 3 months, I really like the finest "Filtrete" filters, they cost about 15 dollars but their worth it. Dust often, every couple of days. Dust right after you vacuum in his bedroom, thoroughly. If there's stuffed animals where he sleeps, get rid of them. Do you have animals in the house? If so, you might think of getting rid of them for medical purposes for your son, it may be allergies to them. Keep windows closed in the house because open windows let in pollen and cause cough. Do you have air fresheners around the house? Get rid of those too. We've gone through the same thing you are describing and I took all of those steps in our home and almost completely diminished the coughing in our house. If you take these measures and still have coughing, I would take him to a Pulmonologist, because it may be asthma (which my daughter and Mom have). I hope this works, I know it sounds like a lot, but it's really not hard.

I have found that rubbing vick's vaporub on the bottom of their feet and putting cotton socks on right before bed really helps with the night time coughing.

I hace not found much, non-medication, that works either. The most effective things we have used are those plug-in vaporizers by vicks or sudacare. Also, the cool-mist vaporizer seemed to calm things...good luck!

I use the Vapor plug-ins as well as a humidifier. My 3 year old has asthma and tends to get congested with allergies and such. I use a humidifier every night. She does very well with these. Also, see if he will drink warm tea with honey before bed.

I had the same question a few months ago and I got a ton of responses for the the vicks vapo rub on the feet. It worked really well. I put a generous amount on his feet, covered them with socks right before bed. He slept great all night. He did cough a couple of times but nothing like the hacking the the nights before. He slept much better.

Hope it works for you too!

Hi there C.

I have found there is a ivy based cough medicine that is good for dealing with coughs and headcolds. The spanish name is Jarabe Helix - I don't know what it would be where you are from.

Hope it helps!

Just more of the same advice here. Get him checked for asthma. Use a humidifier. Spoonful of honey is just as good as "medications". And I use Melaleuca oil on my son's feet/toes when he is congested, it helps open the airways similar to vicks, but it is a more natural remedy. Let me know if you would like to know how to get the oil. Good luck with helping your son!

at night, I'd try chamomile tea with honey...it's the honey that actually helps the cough...
have you also tried a humidifier? since his cough is at night maybe looking around his room to see if there's anything he could potentially be allergic to? carpet is a major concern due to the chemicals used...

Try Vick's rub on the bottom of his feet with socks at night. I was recently very sick and the second I would lay down, I couldn't stop coughing. That is, until I put the Vick's on. Put a good amount on and a pair of socks that you don't care too much about in case it stains. We do the same think with my 2 year old daugher when she's sick only with infant Vick's. We did it from the time she was just a baby and I swear by it.

Maybe you try some Vicks Vapor Rub. It always worked when I was a kid.

The over the counter cough suppressant that works best for my kids is Delsym. I keep a cool mist vaporizer on in their room every night and switch to a warm mist one when coughing flares up. Honey soothes their throat.

Does he have asthma?

When I was little my grandma used to give me honey. For the longest time I hated honey because it was used medicinally for me. I love it now. Anyway it worked.

Hi C.,
Somethings you can try depending on what's causing the cough.
1 table spoon of LOCAL honey a day to build up his immune system to the local allergens. Propping up 2 pillows for him to sleep on. Putting a humidifier in his room and having a glass of water near bedside for him to drink. All to break up the mucous that may be dripping down the back of his throat while he's laying down. Goodluck.
