Children with Atopic Dermatitis/eczema: Looking for a Specialist, Tips, Etc.

Our children (ages 2 and 4) have always had sensitive skin. It seems though as if the problem grows with them. They have been treated off and on with prescription creams, ointments, etc. that also work on and off; however their skin rashes seem to continue spite our efforts (daily bath, daily cream/lotion, etc.) We only use Aveeno products and we've been following peds' advise regarding soap types to use, etc. So far, we are not aware of them having any allergies.

Because we seem to get nowhere, we are hoping for a referral to either, a skin doctor for kids, or an allergist in the area. Do you know a specialist you can recommend within 30 or so miles of Providence?

Also, perhaps it's just coincidence, but I think that as soon as they get on antibiotics, their skin reacts even more. We would appreciate any tips, links, information etc. on AD (atopic dermatitis/eczema). The list of causes/triggers is endless, so how to prevent it or heal it, is not easy. Thanks so much for your advise.

What can I do next?

ask your doctor to rule out the skin form of Celiac Disease. It's caused by a reaction to gluten manifests itself in just the way you are describing. You can do a blood test for celiac or you can do a trial of a gluten free diet to see if their skin gets better. You do not need to go through the full screening for Celiac if they have a positive response to the diet. It is a dietary change for life, but is a miracle for those who experience this. good luck.

My kids also have AD/eczema and this is the season for big flair ups unfortunately. Although atopic dermatitis and eczema are not curable children can grow out of them. For treatment my kids see Paul Mallari at RI Dermatology. Since going to him their outbreaks have become almost non-existent! His office is located across the street from the Lincoln mall. He is excellent with kids! The number there is ###-###-####.

It seems as though you have seen a number of Physicians with your concerns. Have you thought of trying natural alternatives for their condition. They are often more helpful and have no side effects(short term or long term). If you are interested in specific suggestions, Just let me know.

Has anyone told you about Reliv nutritional supplements yet? Reliv has a product for children that has helped kids get relief from all sorts of allergy symptoms, including food allergies. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.
