Hello, Our son was just diagnosed with severe milk allergy after a scary trip to the hospital in an ambulance. His current day care said that they "can't guarantee he won't get someone else's bottle" and we have been trying to find a day care center or in-home option who is very careful and aware of how severe food allergies can be. I am contemplating going to 3 days/wk and trying to find another family who is maybe in the same boat who might want to share care for our children OR finding a place we feel confident about. Unfortunately we have not felt confident with any of the centers we have talked to yet. Does anyone have any advice on child care options or is anyone in the same boat? We are new to the food allergy world and are very concerned about our son's safety.

What can I do next?

Ok, first let me say that the daycare not guaranteeing that he won't get someone else's bottle is a very scary thought in the first place. I run an in-home daycare and let me tell you how fast I would get shut down if there was even a thought of another child getting someone else's cup or bottle. #1 can we say GERMS. #2 GROSS. #3 GERMS. That statement would be my first clue that my child does not belong there. There are many home daycares out there that will be able to accomodate a milk allergy, you also need to make sure that you get 2 epi-pens for your child, one set to keep at daycare and one set to keep with you.

2 of my kids have severe milk allergy and I do not have any problems keeping the milk stuff separate. If you need to bring your child's meals and snacks & drinks, that way there is no question.

Good luck to you and God Bless.

I work at a daycare center and we have several children with severe allergies. Any responsible daycare is going to do everything they can to prevent. It is your childs health and they should be proactive on it. Keep looking around, you will find a daycare who will work with you to make sure your child is safe. Good luck

I'm looking at this a different way. Honestly, nobody can guarentee anything. Accidents happen. As hard as we try to protect our kids, they get bumps and bruises. It's a part of growing up. Did she really say it the way all us moms are taking it or was she sincere and would do her best??? Perhaps she just didn't want to make a promise that could be broken......

If she did seem careless about it, I would suggest switching to another daycare. I did daycare for 5 years and I never had a problem with children drinking from another childs' cup/ bottle. We are required to HOLD them when they bottle feed until they can hold their own bottle. Still, the provider should be RIGHT THERE supervising even if the child is on the floor feeding themselves. If you are the least bit uncomfortable leaving your baby with her, I suggest pulling him out immediately. You do NOT need to give a 2-week notice if you feel that your child is in danger. AND if you do feel that sh eis being careless I HIGHLY suggest reporting her to your local county daycare licensor. There are TOO many bad daycares out there and it's not fair for our kids to be put into those situations!

Good luck.

I don't know if my daycare has any openings for infants at this time (she is supposed to be starting one next month but last I heard she hadn't heard anything from the parents). She normally only has 1 infant (under 12 months) at a time. She is a home daycare, very reasonable for rates and is very much so attention to detail. She has had both of our kids in her care since our oldest was 6 months old and they both had/have special needs and she is amazing with them. Please give her a call, Kris - ###-###-####. She is amazing, and there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to work and know that your son is being cared for the way he needs to be! Good luck!

Are you kidding me, they can't guarantee he won't get someone else's bottle??? If they can't guarantee that, even if he didn't have an allergy, I would not want him at that daycare. I have a home daycare and have worked in child care for over 20 yrs. I CAN guarantee the babies in my care will not get someone else's bottle, because I am HOLDING them and the bottle when I feed them!

Anyways, I am sorry about the allergy. I would look for new daycare and I am sure you will find someone who will work with the allergy and you will comfortable with. I have had several children in my care with allergies, food sensitivities, special diets due to religious or cultural beliefs, etc. It really is not a difficult thing for a provider to deal with. When you start calling providers, that would be the first thing I would talk about, that your child has a severe milk allergy and are they able to safely deal with that (and then let them know what that would entail for them).

Good luck! They are lots of great providers out there that will be willing to help.

I dont know where you live or where your son goes now, but no daycare should every say they cant guarante your son wont get someone elses bottle. I would look into inhome daycare. My son goes to a great one and i have never heard of such a thing. I would actually report that daycare and pull your son out right away. There a lot of good people out there who do daycare who will be very careful with your sons allergys. My son goes to one in blaine, and if your around that area let me know. Good luck.
