Child with Type 1 Latex Allergy

I was just wondering if there is anyone else with a child with a latex allergy that causes systemic reactions (like hives or shock). My 4 year old has been diagnosed with this and it is really overwhelming. We have all the other allergies too, food and pollen and well everything, and I could deal with it. But this latex allergy is so hard and it really makes me feel like I'm out there all alone. Just looking for someone to talk to.

What can I do next?

Hi D.,

You're not alone, believe me! When latex was first developed it was made from rubber. Rubber comes from trees! Now they are manufacturing synthetic latex. Synthetic latex is made from chemicals. And to make matters worse, most of it is coming from China where they are not regulated to our standards.

Allergies to pollens, dust, dog hair and such can be remedied easily because those things are natural and we are supposed to be exposed to them. When our immune system is working at it's best, allergies to natural things don't exist. That's how you know you're healthy. Reactions to unnatural things will always occur. Of course if your immune system is working well, the synthetic things won't bother you AS much but the problem here is that what breaks down our immune system are the chemicals. Can you follow that? Whew!

Build your little one's immune system by keeping the chemicals away and using natural products ( not just cleaning supplies, but bath and body products also). A good absorbable multivitamin will help as well. We detoxed everything in our house and our allergies are gone and nobody EVER gets sick.

Detoxing can be simple, you don't have to make it hard. It can be inexpensive too. It's just a matter of change. (Another hard one, lol) Let me know if you'd like to know more. It took me a while and a lot of effort to come to these conclusions. I wish I had had someone tell me what I just told you!

Knock on wood my son does not have this allergy. I have had problems with this allergy and I have an uncle who has severe asthma attacks. My uncle work as a nurse in a surgical unit before there were any none latex avialable and that is why his allergy is so severe.
Basically no rubberbands, no balloons(this is the hard one), no latex gloves. It is harder if his allergy is more airborne then direct touch. If it is airborne you will have to do more research to find out the stores and resturants that are latex free. Also if you have a couple of local haunts that you just love. Talk to the owner. They maybe willing to switch to using latex free gloves and latex free balloons. Also try accupresser. It only works for a time. But it helps.

My mother is allergic to latex. It's really no big deal. You just make sure you tell doctors and nurses and they put it in your chart, so when they examine you or put you in the hospital, etc., that they don't use latex gloves or IV attachments, etc. Also let the dentist know because they'll use the same precaution. You'll of course give him different bandages.

My doctors/dentist don't use latex on me due to a reaction I had with my 3rd child while in the hospital. I think it was mainly the glue from the bandage on my back. It looked like a burn! Anyway, they just use the latex precaution to just make sure since my mother is allergic to latex.

I don't have a child with this but mom has developed this. She had surgery on her arm and broke out in hives around the latex band-aid. She no longer can be around any latex. She also has to be careful about the bras she buys or she will break out where the band is. I don't know if it is a type 1 allergy but if she does have contact with it on her skin she starts to break out. She has not been formally diagnosed with it but she also has the indoor/outdoor alllergies which were not diagnosed until she was 50. She has been receiving shots now for over 10 years.

I don't have a child with latex allergys, but I have a latex allergy.

It is overwhelming at first (trying to learn what all has latex that you need to avoid) but once you get that figured out it's not so bad. I also have allergies to pollen and some plants. I do not have food allergies.

For the 4 year old there probably isn't going to be much that has latex in it. Some underwear bands and hair bands are latex so you might want to find the ones that have the bands covered with fabric or are just fabric. Always make sure you tell doctors and nurses before any procedures are done).

Again, I know it seems like a lot now, but it does get easier to deal with :)
