Child's Age

I know this might sound weird, but what do I go by to tell my sons age. Do I go by weeks-every 4 weeks is a month, or by the day he was born. If I go by weeks he's 3 days short of 5 months. If I go by the day he was born he is almost 5 1/2 months. I know it sounds weird but I just want to know how old my son actually is. I have heard people tell me both ways and I'm really confused.

So What Happened?

WELL....thanks everyone so much for your input, very helpful. I am going to go by the date he was born so today the 23rd he is 5 months old, b/c he was born August 23, 2006. I asked the doc once but he said weeks but then he goes by months for all our check ups, my friend asked her doc and he said go by date. Thanks so much now I won't worry about it so much, there is more important things to worry about then that...

Hello, I'm B. and I have two children ages 5 and 3. I always went by the day they were born. Like my daughter who is 5, her birthday is April 10th. SO lets say May 10 is one month old, and so on. Anyone I have talked to usually goes by the day, not by the weeks. However you can say he is so many weeks old. Like if he was born on the 1st day of the month and its the 14th day of the next month, then he would be 6 weeks old. 4 weeks for the month and an extra 2 weeks into the next month. I hope that helps. B.

I counted my daughter in weeks till she was about 2 months. Then I went to months then at about 18 months she was 1 then two. The only reason I went that long on months was I kept geting asked how many months. Now she is over two and two seems to work for people. I guess if I get asked for months again I will let them do the math and say she is two and born in September.

Hi A. W. I know children in general can get very confusing but this is an easy one. Be proud of your son's age. He was born on a specific day. Not a specific week right? So go by the day. My son was born on July 18th and I go by that day. He is One Year Six months and five days old. You could round if you want. Like I would say he is a year and a half. I don't count that week now. But you also have to remember that not all months have only four weeks. Some have three and a half and some have five. How ever you feel comfortable about saying his age is how you should do it. Good Luck!!!

After 6 weeks of age, I always go by months, counting by the date of birth. Say your child was born May 26, as of the 26th of every month I'd say "my son is just shy of 8 months old" etc.

I would just go by how many months he is. When my baby turned 1 I would just tell people she's one becuse I think it's silly when people say that there child is 27 months or 36 months. Who wants to do the math, we're not at the doctor's. For you, it will just be easier to tell people months or say he's 5 months alomost 6 months. Nobody really cares how many weeks.

I am not sure...depends on who you talk to. I would always go by weeks until mine were about 3 months old then I would say months "5 months or 5 1/2 months depending on date of month" C.

A.,
I have always gone by the babies birthdate. I.E. If your son was born on January 1 and its now Jan. 22 then I would say he is 3 weeks old. Once it hits Feb 1st I would say he is 1 month old then go by his birthdate from then on out. Like on April 1 he would be 3 months old. Does that make sense? I have heard of some people saying "well my child is 27 weeks old" and I think that gets kind of confusing after about 8 weeks because then people have to compute the weeks into months in their head. Hope this answers your question!

What I did with my kids is I took it from their birthdate and went from there. Then when the day would roll around I would say that they were a month old It all depends on what the parent feels like doing. please feel free to contact me at ____@____.com.

I always just went by the date they were born and then considered that date the next month as a month (Jan 3-Feb 3= 1 month). You are right, every child is different. They don't all progress at the same pace in the same things, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are slow. My son started cutting teeth at 4 mos and my dd was 9 mos before she got the 1st one! My dd turned over once at 5 weeks and I thought she was way ahead of the game, but she never did it again for 3 months! lol. My son started crawling at 6 mos, pulling up at 7 mos, but didn't walk until 11 mos. My dd didn't crawl at all, just rolled across the floor to get where she was going, lol, and then she got up and walked at 10 mos. They are all different. Babycenter.com is another very helpful website for any questions you might have about your baby. Enjoy him, they grow up so fast.:)

First I have to say that four weeks equals 28 days, and as we all know there is only one month in a year hat is that short, so your calculation seem off. Secondly, you do know how old your child is, you know the day he was born, as far as tracking his development, as a CNA you should know that these are the guidelines are flexible, especially with a premature baby. Development varies so much in the first year, I know babies that have walked at eight months (me for one), and some that don't walk until they're over a year old (my brother), and both of us walk fine now. Developmental milestones generally happen in a specific order, not at a specific time. As long as he is progressing there's no need to stress out. He's only 5 months old!

I always went from the day they were born. So I would say your son is almost 5 1/2 months old. They are so cute at that age. God bless you, S.

You can go by weeks from the day he was born, or go by months from the day of the month. Either way is appropriate. A baby born 10/15/06 would be 14 weeks (if you go by weeks) or a little over 3 months (if you go by months). It is all in how you want to count it. I go by weeks from the DAY he was born. It is more accurate for me.

I just go by the day born:

Example... My daughter was born on April 5, 2006 - so on May 5, 2006 she turned one month old... 1/2 way through the month we called her 1 1/2 months old - and then on June 5th she turned 2 months old. It is kind of confusing... like my daughter Meadow started walking a week before she "turned" 9 months old and I was like... so was she still 8 months old when she started walking?? I guess so...

That's actually are REALLY GOOD question! Considering that most developmental charts go by months, you would think it would be standardized and explained. There could be a big difference developmentally between almost 5 months and 5 1/2 months.

I never thought about asking but the next time you're at your pediatrician, I would ask them what the standard medical practice is in determining age in months.

The reason people differentiate between weeks and months is because there are four and half weeks in a month. If your baby is four weeks old, he is not one month old.
