Child Services for Special Needs
Hello everyone. I don't know quite how to word this. I have a four year old boy that is behind. He is attending the early childhood program through the school district to help him get caught up and ready for school. It is an awsome program and he has shown a lot of progress, but the school year is at the half way mark and he scheduled to start kindergarten next year, but is not ready. His birthday falls in late November so we have the choice to hold him back a year, or put him in special needs kindergarten, unfortunatly he'll be five and won't qualify for the program he's in now. i would like to find a preschool -not daycare, for him. I am a preschool teacher and have taught at a daycare, wow is all I can say about that. Will never do that again!
As far as his "problems", we discovered he wasn't hearing very well, and have had tubes put in his ears, which so far seem to have worked. But it wasn't caught until he was three! Then the doctors say he is showing all the signs of ADD, which I didn't think too much about until I started doing a lot of research and watching my son and listening to the doctor. It's hard to understand my son so he's in speech therapy -one hour a week. Also he has a hard time with fine motor skills. He can't trace shapes or lines, which lead to writing.
I was hoping maybe to find someone else who has been here or going through anything like this. Or if anyone knows of any schools or other programs that might be able to help.

I personally have not been through your exact situation. I have found that sign language has improved my daughter's fine motor skills. Signing Time is on PBS every Sunday at 7:00 am. They use music and repetition for teaching. My daughter loves it, and her fine motor skills have improved MUCH since she started. It is (I think) 30 minutes long and it may also help since he had problems hearing at first. It will also help him learn new words and a new way to communicate his feeling. I hipe this helps.

I know someone who runs a programs for special needs children in Arizona and it is all funded by the government. My inlaws will be here over the weekend, so please email me at ____@____.com and I will be sure to ask them to get more info. Maybe there is a similar program here.

Hi C.,
My daughter has ADHD and Bi-polar. She was our foster child and then we adopted her. My daughter went to Kids campus for private Kindergarten on MLK and Alexander. Her teacher Mr and Mrs Larson are awesome teachers. She is now getting ready to go into 2nd grade at public school and is a staight A student. The foundation she got at Kids campus was well worth every penney and continues to pay for itself.

When my son started kindergarten he also had a hearing problem that gave him speech issues. His birthday is also off so we had the option of holding him back. We hadn't realized that at the time, and I really wish we had because we had to hold him back in the 2nd grade. I think you will be happier starting him in kindergarten next year. And maybe trying out a Montessori daycare there are few here in Las Vegas. I've heard a lot of good things about these types of schools. You can do a search for the closest one to you with the online telphone book.
