Hi My son is 5 and has a regulation disorder with sensory needs. His central nervous system is immature and he has trouble processing information. His sences are very sensitive. He has recently over the summer develped a problem with chewing on his finger. (like a nervous habit) or his shirt collar. Where i and his pedatrician have labled this pretty normal, at the time of discussing it we felt this too shall pass. However, We (parents and teachers) are very concerened about the santitary part of the matter. I am looking for suggestions on what to try. Here is what we have tryed so far...gum chewing, a sensory chew stick, and bandaids. Any suggestion is a good one. Thanks in advance for all your help.

you might try idoine on hsi finger and tell him about GERMS. Many times when you show them what a germ is.....they will understand if you make it as grotesque as you can. they will stop. I did. lol I was shown what a germ looked like and my mother painted my fingers with iodine so I could get some stimuli by the red coloring and it reminded me of the germs and I stopped putting my fingers in my mouth. kids can see the color red from the iodine and it also taste not so good, as another taste, which will remind him or her of the GERMS. so try painting his fingers with the iodine. It works on most kids as a detriment to biting or sucking fingers.

have you tried using a hot pepper sauce? if you just rub a little on his fingers, that might get him to stop and it won't hurt him. this worked for someone i know.

how about letting him chew on something like a straw? get some of theose mini coffe stirrers possibly? as long as the teachers can be understanding and allow something like that? When I read this request it brought me back to my kindergarden days, thinking about how we used to put fruitroll-ups around our fingers and eat them off. However, he can't eat fruit roll-ups 24/7! or he will be bouncing off the walls! good- luck hope this suggestion helps, its worth a shot

Wow, I see you have tried a lot of things...things I was going to suggest. However, have you tried the rubbing technique. I think that is what it is called...ask the Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist about it. Don't try it on your own until you have talked with the OT/PT and they show you how to do it and give you reading material on it. It is basically this...a surgical scrubbing brush is used, you know those ones you see the doctors on tv shows washing their hands with before surgery...then it is gently rubbed on the childs arms/back and this gives them something they are missing. It can be done at anytime.
Ask you PT/PT about it. My son had the same kind of issue, not as bad I don't think...but this helped some.

i am not sure if this would work but maybe if you make his finger taste bad he wont chew on it. nothing to drastic like hot sauce. but maybe lemon juice or the stuff that makes you stop biting your nails. i can tell you personally the nail biting stuff is gross. i used it to try to stop biting my nails. hope it helps.
