Chicken Pox at 14 Months?? Is This Normal??

My daughter is 14 months old. Yesterday she woke up with these small zit type looking things on her face, about 3 or 4 of them. They were very noticeable in the morning but faded away almost completely by last night. Now this morning she woke up with about 7 of them on one side of her face & 2 on her legs, they look like small zits. She is no medication, just some ear drops. I called the dr. that prescribed the drops & he said it should have nothing to do with that. So my question to all you very experienced moms, have you seen or heard of babies getting the chicken pox this young? Also, she did get the chicken pox shot about 2-3 months ago, I thought once they got the shot if they still got the chicken pox it was only like one or two. Thanks for the advice!

So What Happened?

Something didn't seem right about how she was acting, so I did take her to the doctor yesterday. It was not the chicken pox, the dr. didn't think. Her throat was all red, and she had an infection in her nose. Not to mention her ear was still infected even though she is on the drops by a different dr. So the Dr. put her on an antibiotic which will also clear up the zit type things. She had tubes put in her ears 2 wks ago, but that doesn't seem to have done anything about the chronic ear infections.

Anyway, the Dr. said the red zit type of things are from a virus or infection. And sometimes people get them when they are sick, she had some big long name but I honestly cannot remember.

Thanks for all the advice. Oh, I took her to the new clinic that just opened in Big Lake. In case any of you are thinking of going there. They have one Dr., Dr. Sutherland- she is very nice, and she has been practicing medicine for a long time. My grandma used to see her & she passed away over 15 yrs ago. Thanks again!

Regarding the chronic ear infections, my kids both had tubes and it took a couple of months after the tubes were put in before things "settled down" and their ears weren't draining/infected. I just stuck with the drops like the Dr. said and eventually they stopped getting infected so frequently. The only time they really had an ear infection after the first couple of months was if they had a really bad cold and had been very congested.

Are you sure these are chicken pox? My son had a staph infection at around 3 months that sounds very similar to this. It kept getting worse until we took him to the doctor and they gave him antibiotics. It got rather scary. As it got worse, the areas started to seep a honey-like liquid. It was rather gross and somewhat scary. Yours may not be this, but I'd have the doctor check her out just to be safe. Good luck!

M., this sounds like what happened to my daughter. For the first few months of her life we were had several doctors appointments to find out what it was. Turns out it was chronic hives and there wasn't anything that was causing them. We were told to give her a bath and before she was completely dry, put Eucerin lotion all over her and let it soak in. The hives never seamed to itch her. She has kind of grown out of them now, but occasionally she will get a few "zit" looking patching on her cheeks.

Again, I don't know if this is your answer, but that's how hers started. I hope it helps, good luck!

Sounds more like heat rash to me. Did the doctor have any ideas when you called?

My baby was 3 weeks old when she got the chicken pox. I noticed the spots during her baptism ceremony!! Her older sister (2 1/2 at the time) also broke out with hundreds of spots, in her mouth, ears, scalp, everywhere. The baby faired better with only about 25 spots.( I think breastfeeding her helped with extra antibodies.
What really gets me is that I took my baby in to the dr's office prior to baptism when I noticed one lone spot in her diaper area. I had him check it and he said it was hard to know and sent me home. This was after my younger daughter had already broken out and had run a temp for 3 days. I was told that if I caught the pox early enough, I could have gotten my child(ren) medicine that would have prevented a major breakout. Which is exactly what happened to my 2 year old daughter who still has many scars from it on her body and some on her face. I still feel guilty for not following my gut on this because I had the strong feeling it was the pox. Anyway, even after the shot you can break out. It is said that the shot will help contain the breakout. Calmine lotion and oatmeal baths helped with the itchyness. This was my experience with the pox.

Has she been eating grapes? My son got hives from eating grapes a few months ago, and I've found a few other people who have had similar reactions to grapes. It's not exactly the grapes themselves but something on the grapes (I wash all fruit thoroughly--didn't help). The hives didn't bother him and went away overnight but came back the next day and then went away again. Just a thought . . .

To be honest, those don't sound like chicken pox - they usually don't disappear in a day. They start off like a red bump (like a forming pimp), form a clear center, then crust over. The spots themselves last for several days to a week or so.

As far as the shot. All of my kids have been vaccinated. My eldest was vaccinated near around when the shot was originally released to the public. She came down with a moderate case of chicken pox. My feeling was hopefully it prevented her from having a severe case. She has been exposed several times since then, and hasn't had them again, so she's not one of those kids who never gets immunity *thank goodness*! She was 1 when she had the vaccination - around 3 when she had chicken pox.

My younger daughter looked like she might have one pock mark *maybe* around the same time that her sister had chicken pox. That was a few months after she'd been vaccinated (twice by accident).

My son was vaccinated at 12 months. Challenged since, and no problems.

I know of *little* babies who have had chicken pox as well as adults who get it. There's really no age range. The idea behind the vaccination isn't necessarily 100% immunity, but to prevent the complications associated with chicken pox and hopefully to prevent shingles down the road.

I don't think it's chicken pox, they don't dissapear and your daughter would show discomfort. Have you recently used a new laundry soap?? or anythink like that...My daughter broke out during the night because we had washed her pillow case in Gain detergent. As soon as she was out of contact with the pillow case the rash started to fade. It was pretty scary until I figured out what was causing it. I ran everything I washed in the detergent through just a rinse cycle (no soap) a couple of times until I could't smell it anymore and thought It was out. Good Luck!

My daughter sometimes gets these when she gets really hot or if she is sweating in a particular area. This might be why she wakes up with them (sleeping on one side of face maybe) and then they go away throughout the day. I've never done anything about them (except watch) and they've never been an issue and always gone away.

My son got one rather large pox at about 14 mo too. It was right at the sight where he got his chicken pox shot at 12 mo. The doctors say that the child may actually contract the virus after getting the shot because the shot is what they call a "live virus" but usually they see it in 2-3 weeks. My son didn't get his pox until 2 months later. I had the doctor look at it on two different occasions and they didn't know for sure what it was although they admitted it looked like a chicken pox spot. There was no oozing and it didn't grow bigger so I wasn't too concerned. It hung around for a good while before it disappeared but eventually it did. I would have the doc check out the pox to be sure especially if your child is in daycare and may potentially expose other children (infants under 12 mo) who haven't had the shot.

I think it is normal at almost any age. My daughter's daycare children had it under age 2. My daughter wasn't exposed for long enough to contract it. I actually hoped my daughter would get them so we could be done with it. The symptoms are often a little more tolerable at younger ages. Even though there is a vaccination for it, it still doesn't guarantee immunity. The only 100% immunity is contracting it.

Not that your pedetrician would agree but the way my son got through his chronic ear infections was through chiropractic adjustments. We have seen a chiropractor once a month as a family for the past 11 years. I know that it has done wonders for all three of my children's sleep patterns!
