Chicken Pox - Acworth, GA

HELP!!! My son has broken out with a severe case of chicken pox. This is the second time he has gotten them. The first time was when he was 3 or 4. He is now 11 and having a really bad time. We have tried everything that I can think of. He is taking benedryl for the itching and tylenol for the pain and fever. We are giving him cool oatmeal bathes with baking soda. We are also rubbing him down with calamine and/or benedryl cream. Nothing seems to be working. I have never seen chicken pox this bad. He is covered from head to foot. Please if you know of something else we can try I would greatly appreciate it!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, we did take him to the doctor and it is definately chicken pox. They said that the first time he had it may not have given him immunity. We are existing in oatmeal, baking soda, epsom salt and aloe vera juice bathes. The doctor also gave him three prescriptions to treat some of the symptoms. He is still pretty much miserable, but hopefully its almost over and the other two children will not get it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for all the advise!!

Have no fear!! Both of my children had them 3 times and they have them bad as in you couldn't tell where one blister started and the other. The worst was when they ahd they in the mouth. Please be careful that he doesn't scratch and then touch his eyes. If he were to get them in the eyes, it could cause blindness. The oatmeal bath is the best!!Try making oatmeal paste and rubbing that on him like cream and just let it set.You might try "itch" cream that is used for bites.

Hi!
Are you sure is chicken Pox?? I was sure that a person could only get this once.
In any case, my son just got over a BAD case of poison ivy (by the way I know this is sometimes mistakely dignosed as chicken pox),it was really bad and nothing was helping, calamine, aveeno baths, etc. I called the doctor and she prescribed a stronger medicine to control the itching, the name is Loratadine (is like a prescription benadryl). It really helped him with the itching and the sores. There is another wonderful lotion or oitment much better than Calamine, it is ZANFEL, they sell it in some walgreens and Publix, it is more expensive but this really helped driyng up the sores and stoping the itchin so much faster. Here is their web site www.zanfel.com

I hope it gets better!

I have to agree, take him to the pediatrician. I have worked in pediatrics for a while and they can prescribe medications and maybe give him something in the office to give him immediate relief. I hope son feels better soon!

HI, your poor son! By any chance did he have the chicken pox vaccine? it became stadard about the time your guy was little and many people will get reaccuring outbreaks even though they had the vaccine. I was just curious.
I wouldn't put calamine on it- that can irritate the skin more.
Benadryl- good!
And oatmeal and barely- both skin rejenutives!

Boil a big pot of water and add in a cup or two each of real oatmeal (no packets/fast cooking) and barely. After you add it cover and simmer on low for 20 minutes.
Then plug your empty bath and put a stariner in it and dump the pot of stuff into the tub. then take out the strainer which has caught all the oat and barley- ou can toss it or eat it! it is very good for you and oatmeal taste super yummy with barely in it!

Next fill water into the oatmeal/barely tea that you have in the tub and let him bathe. The tea will help with itching and promote quicker healing!

Please bring him to his pediatrician. It is very rare that a child get chicken pox more than once in their life. It may not be chicken pox. In addition, most kids are immunized against chicken pox.

Your pediatrician can help your son with his discomfort.

I see that several other moms have given great advice but something nobody has thought of is STREP my son had it 3 weeks ago we thought it was poison oak and kept him at home the first day after break out per the schools rules but nothing we were using was drying it up and beleave me I felt like a super idiot when he told me it was strep I had been treating the dang rash for a week. It looks like really bad chicken pox with a dash of poison oak thats been really scratched. He had this rash from his head to his feet. He never ran a fever nothing I had no clue mt son was sooo sick. So this past week when he broke out again we went straight back to the doctor and its poison sumac that hot rod poison oak. It spreads like wild fire all over there body theres not a spot ob him not covered. He got a shot this time of cortizone and it was really cleared up alot within hours we are still using benedryl creme to stop the right nows but its drying up. Take him to the doctor I bet its STREP !

Have you tried calling the doctor to see if he could prescribe him something stronger?

Hey T.,

I read about your battle with your son and his chicken pox, my son both had them neither case was as bad as what your going through, but the severe itchiness I did deal with and pure aloe worked better than anything else I tried. I hope it helps.
