Well I have had an IUD for about 16 months. It works great, but my periods have become almost unbareable. Does anyone know if this is normal, or if it will ever calm down?

What can I do next?

I also had a Mirena. I loved it at first. I had no periods at all. I had it for about three years and then I developed breast cancer and they made me take it out because of the hormones in it. They believed that it helped my tumors grow faster so I got rid of it quick!

I had an IUD for about 2 1/2 years (the copper one) and I had the same problem. My periods were extremely heavy. Finally I had enough of it and went to get it taken out. It was a good thing because when I went to have it removed I found out I was pregnant. I guess I am the .01% that it doesn't work on.

I had one for about 4 months, and it caused some serious pain, and eventually gave me pelvic inflamitory desiese. The pain was so bad I had to get it removed. I don't think it is likely to get better.

R., I had a copper IUD for about a year, on new years eve I took a pregnancy test and it was positive, went to the the doctor, the ultra sound could not find baby, but all other test were positive, after weeks of going back and forth to the OBGYN , getting shots to abort baby because it was not in my uterus, still all blood work said there was still a baby inside of me somewhere. All of this was very emotionally and physically painful. after missing six weeks of work I finally went back, two days after I returned, I stood up, then passed out, when I came to I was at the hospital, only to find out they had to perform emergency surgey, my tube was about to explode, I could have died from internal bleeding had that happened. My best advice is be careful!!!

I have had an IUD put in after each child. One was for 4 years and one was for 2 1/2. The doctor told me with both of them that it may make your period longer and may give you worse cramps than usual. I never had cramps to begin with so it didn't really affect me. They do reccommend that you keep it in for atleast 2 years though. If it's causing you alot of trouble, go to the doc and see if there is another option. I loved both of mine and I would recommend it to any one. Some people's body just reacts different. I know quite a few people who have had theirs in for 6-8 years now and love them and then again ones who had trouble from the beginning. I wouldn't trade comfort for having an easy method of birth control. Call your doctor.

I know that in the beginning it can make your periods worse, but it should even out and start making them less painful, less blood loss, and even stop all together. If it has been that long and you are still having trouble, I would definitely talk to your doctor. Everyone is different and your body may just not be responding to this very well. I have been on the depo-provera shot for 2 years and love it, I do have some periods, spotting, not even enough to wear a tampon, and if I need one I can use the regular whereas before I was using plus every hour. There is a off brand of this now which makes it very affordable. There is also a new birth control called Implanon, it is recent to the US and doctors are still being trained on how to insert it. but it is a rod about the size of a matchstick, inserted into the underside of your upper arm, it is not visible, and it provides over 99% effectiveness for up to 3 years. My doctor will start me on this in about 6-9 months when he has been trained and I am very excited. I hope that things work out for you.

I have had my IUD for about 2 yrs and for the first 10 mons maybe, it seemed like my period was worse. It did get better though and I barely even have a period anymore. Although your body my be different I would still go to the doctor and let them know about your pain. Maybe its nothing but rather be safe, don't you think. Good luck

I had my IUD put in when my twins were 3 months old. I never had a regular period until I had it taken out. My periods lasted 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. They were light but I ruined many pair of my good underwear because I never knew when it was going to start.

When I got it taken out 2 1/2 years later I bled for the first 2 weeks and I mean heavy. I went throgh 40 super plus tampons in 4 days. My Dr. put me on the pill to even things out and now I am not on anything and an fine. My face hasn't broken out and I believe that I am actaully loosing weight.

In my opinion I don't think they should be used. You are not suppose to have things like that put in you and I wish that I would have had some one to talk to when I fist got it.

I had the Merina and it was brand new in the states when I got it. All I can say is that I am glad that it is gone and it is much better for hubby to put on a comdom than deal with that pain anymore.

Hope this helps,
B.

Hi, R.
About your question it really depends on what IUD you have. There are metal ones like copper that make your periods longer and more painful. The one I have is a plastic one called the Mirena and it's great, it lasts for 5 yrs and Ive had it for two yrs and my periods are lighter and with no cramps. Lately Ive had no period at all for two or three months at a time. Hope this helps if you keep having problems I would go back to the doctor.

What type of IUD do you have? I have one, called the Mirena. It has hormones in it, which is supposed to lighten your periods, or stop your periods. Most IUDs do not have hormones in them, and I've heard that those can go either way--it can make your periods worse, with cramping, or won't affect them at all. I would call your dr and see what she thinks. After 16 mos, it seems your periods would have gotten better, or at least stayed about the same.

I have had my IUD for the past four months and I've been getting my period twice a month the whole time. I can't stand it and I think the constant PMS is starting to affect my marriage. This wasn't in any of the brochures I read.

I agree w/most everyone else. Call your doc. That doesn't sound right. I had some pretty awful cramping for the first several weeks, but that resolved after a few months. You shouldn't be having that problem now.

Hi R.,
I have had the Mirena IUD since 5 months after my daughter was born.. That was about a year & 1/2 ago now.. So hard to believe.. I have not had a true period in almost 3 years now(Pregnancy to breastfeeding & IUD).. I use to have horrible periods... I would definately call your doctor on this issue.. The Mirena is one of the best decisions I have ever made.. Sometimes a dull ache vs. cramping, but NO period!! It is great!!
Good luck!!!!

hello R.,

I have had my IUD now for over 4 almost 5 years and I barely have a period. If you are bleeding heavily check with your doctor, your body may be rejecting the iud. Good Luck.

R.,

I personally do not have an IUD so I can't offer first hand experience. However, a very close friend of mine does have one and has had bad periods with hers. In fact last month while at the beach she had to go to the emergency room her cramps were so bad. They checked her IUD and it had turned so that it wasn't in the right place. You may want to consider having your GYN check it just to be sure that its still where its supposed to be. I hope this helps.

It depends on the kind of IUD you have. I had a copper one and I had a period from Christmas to Valentines. I had had it about a year and a half when all that started. My periods became unbareable. I ended up having that one taken out, and the Merina put it. The only bad thing about that one was for the first month or so, I had extreme pregnancy symptoms, even though I wasn't pregnant. (Sore breasts and nausea were the main things.) But after about a month and a half, I got over that, and I was fine. Now my periods don't even last a whole day, usually, b/c of the medicine that is in the IUD. I have had this one about 2 1/2 years, and I love it. When it is time to have this one taken out and a new one put in, I'll get the same thing again.

Hi R., I had an IUD (Mirena not the copper one) after my first daughter and when my periods came it was unbearable. I decided to take it out and when it came out it felt like my body just let out a sigh of relief. I decided to use the depo-provera and it has been great. Only one injection every 90 days and I haven't had a period since my first injection.

I have the Merina IUD. I have had it a little more than 2 years now. I don't have a period at all. Mine stopped about 6 months after I got it. I spot every so often but it is usually when I am on antibiotics or something. I have experienced some pain during sex but the doc said it didn't have anything to do with the IUD. I hope your doc can find out what is wrong and you get to feeling better.

I have had the Mirena for almost 3yrs and LOVE it. No heavy periods(sometimes none at all, just spotting), no pain, some fatigue(but I think that is from other things)no weight gain. NO PREGNANCY. I Love it and highly recommend it to ALL my friends. I know everyone reacts differently to different things but I had 2 nurses in the Dr's office tell me they loved the Mirena also and both had,had it in for more than a year or two. Good luck.

I have had an IUD for about 2 years now. I never had problems with cysts until I had the IUD put in and I never had any pain with intercorse until then. I am really considering having it removed. I do believe in birth control but I look at it as if the Lord wants you to have a child you are going to get pregnant reguardless of birth control.

I have had mine for about 18 months or so and I barely have a period either. I think you should see you GYN about that. It says , even on the information packet, it should lessen or eliminate your period. Anyway you go, you need to talk to your docotr soon.

Hi R., I used to work in reproductive healthcare and the previous posts all ring true. If you have a copper IUD having heavier periods is normal but not the norm. If there's a possibility you could try a Mirena. I would highly recommend it from personal use after both of my girls. Each time I have not even experienced periods, but they claim that only happens in 10% of cases. Good luck. K.
