Cheapest Grocery Store

OK, I am doing my own little survey. My husband and I are trying to get back on track and our house payment caught back up from missing two. This means I am on a very tight budget. I have started using coupons. Even though it always seems the coupons are ones I don't need. I'm not one to drive from store to store to get things either. I was wondering what grocery store in general you think has the best everyday deals. I am trying to check the weekly fliers for sales. But in general, who offers the best deals. I have been going to Wal-Mart but was wondering if Sack -n- Save may be any cheaper. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went to Kroger yesterday with some coupons in hand. They are having a big sale. Bought what I could of store brand and used coupons for the rest. The double and triple daily. Came home with 5 bags full and only spent $18. That included a 32 load size of tide.

Overall cheaper is WalMart...with the benefit of taking the sales
ads with you from the other stores, because they will price match.

I have found sack and save to be cheaper but they don't have the selection, if you can purchase bulk items sams is cheaper than walmart usually and you save a lot of money on bulk, but it may be a little pricier at time of purchase.

hope this helps

Wal-Mart will honor other stores sale prices. If you just take in the ads--go through it ahead of time and know what you need--then just show them the ads and they will lower the price. I sometimes just take a sticky notepad with me, and when I pick up an item that is in another store ad, I write the store and the price. Usually the cashiers don't even want to see the ad, they just take my word for it. That gets you all the sale prices without going store to store.

Just FYI: Walmart will price match the ads from other grocery stores. You just have to ask them to. I personally shop at Walmart because they are cheaper. I usually go during the week, so that it is not so busy.

I was in the same situation as you a few months ago and had to find the cheapest store to shop at. Here is what I learned. Yes Sack-n-save is cheaper then any other store I have found. However if you get the weekly fliers circle what you want to buy and take them to Walmart they will honor those ads. Yes it can be a pain pointing out every little thing to the cashier but in the long run it saves a ton of money and time not having to drive to all those different stores. One thing to keep in mind is that Walmart does not honor buy one get one frees. What I did most of the time was check the weekly ads and compare the price to Sack-n-Save if it was better to shop the ads that week we went to Walmart or if it was better to go to Sack-n-Save we went there.

I am usually a Wal-Mart shopper b/c of their cheap prices. However, I am usually unhappy with their produce and meat quality/selections. I went to Kroger the other day and I noticed that Kroger's produce quality was superior to Wal-Marts AND some of the prices were cheaper than Wal-Mart! i.e. Canteloupe at Wal-Mart was $2.34 and at Kroger it was $2.00 and the quality was better. Also, if you have a Kroger card you can save on groceries. I tired coupons, but as you stated, the coupons were usually not for things I needed and I refused to buy something just because I had a coupon for it. AND there are some items that I do not mind buying "store brand" such as spaghetti. Usually the "store brand" is manufactured by a name brand and is cheaper than the name brand even with a coupon. Happy shopping!

I personally an a Wal-mart person myself and yes they do match the prices in other ads, but they do not take double coupons. So I shop wal-mart when wal-mart is truely cheaper, but with the weekly flier I go to Kroger for double coupons. I find Albertson's and Tom Thumb on average higher, except on various specials and rarely go there unless it is truely convienent. Minyard, sack n save, and carnival, all owned by the same family may have smaller choices on meat, but excellent quality. The produce at Carnival and Fiesta cannot be beat in freshness and usually price also.

Just my 2 cents worth.

If you have a Minyard's close by they usually have decent prices. The selection on meat isn't all that great though. One thing I've found that helps is to plan out a week or two (I can only ever manage a week) of meals. This way you can use recipes that have some the same ingredients so you aren't buying a ton of stuff (especially fresh veggies) that will go bad because you don't use it all. Another thing I do is try to go to the grocery after my son is asleep while my husband is watching him; this way it doesn't take as long because I'm by myself & I don't want to stay there for a long time because I want to go home & get to bed! One more thing: make a list & stick very close to it!!!! This has really helped me, sure I still grab some things if they are on sale but for the most part having a list has helped me cut down on impulse buys. Good luck & happy shopping!

I actually use coupons to the fullest extent where you can get groceries for free. I am not a Wal-Mart shopper or Sack 'n' Save. I actually use Albertson's, Kroger and Tom Thumb because they double and triple coupons. I usually pick one store per week to go to depending on sales and my savings on my receipt are at least 50-70% per trip. I am a working mother of two soon to be three so I know what it is to be on a budget! If you would like to learn more, let me know! I learned this partially through one of those paying sites (www.iwantfreegroceries.com) but am not affiliated with and have started my own FREE yahoo group for moms who want to save money in the Keller area!

I never found Sack N Save to save any money in the long run. Kroger doubles & triples coupons, but you have to watch out for that, too. I always found the best deals at Wal Mart, even though I detest shopping there for personal reasons. Wal Mart takes coupons, but only at face value.
Here's what will work best, but only if you commit to spending time and effort into research. Check your weekly flyers that come in the mail for the local stores. Compare what their specials are that week against your list to see who has the best deals ON WHAT YOU NEED that week. Then, check your coupons for WHAT YOU NEED. You will save a lot of money, but it consumes a lot of time and energy.

Like Jennifer said, Walmart has price matching. I look through the ad s and attach a post it to them with all the stuff that's in them that I need so the cashier isn't annoyed and I'm not so flustered when checking out.
