Cheap Art Stuff?

Hey mommies!

I've been drawing my whole life and it keeps me sane haha. We have an extra bedroom that we have been using as a guest room. My b/f suggested I turn it into my Art room. Best Idea ever imo.
BUt I don't have a table, or anythign like that. I would LOVE a drafting table or something similar.
Eventually I would love to have a table, light table, art cabinets, the WHOLE shabang...
Do any of you know where I could find a good drafting/drawing table that isn't going to cost me my 1st born?

Denise: I've been looking, but so far nothing :(
@ Kate: Oh that sounds so amazing!! but yeesh $200, I wish I had that money.

What can I do next?

Call the facilities department at a local college that has an engineering program. See if they are trying to get rid of any of their drafting tables for new ones.

I was going to say Craigslist also. Try different words in your search. Sometimes people don't know they have a drafting table or an easel. They may just put "table" and "poster holder".....

Depends on what you want to spend. My daughter is an artist. We went to KIEA and she found components to amke a desk that appealed to her Art needs and her teenage girl sensibilities.

She got these Sawhorse looking trestle legs

And this glass etched top (ok hers has words all over it...but this was her second choice)
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30115537#/3011...

Then my hubby put a metal channel piece at the bottom (to catch pens and pencils) as hers is angled. Above the desk she has this, with the plastic cups for her colored pencils and drawing things, paint brushes, cutting tools and other art stuffs...Shoot..can't find it. But its from IKEA...a metal rod, looks like a not-as-sturdy-as-a-towel-rod rod...a few feet long, and these plastic cups hook onto it (they are made for it). The whole thing with 4 or 5 cups was about $20 tops and perfect for the wall over the desk to hold all these things that are "stick like"..pencils, pens and brushes.

Under the sawhorse legs and under the desk, since its so deep back to the wall, she has one of those rolling organizer drawer units for paper and miscl things like a glue gun and such (she draws and does all sorts of 3D mixed media art). Its really a great creative space in a big corner of her room!

We love IKEA!

I got an amazing drafting table at Ikea for around $200. The sides have a peg system so you can make it as slanted as you want, or as flat. The only bummer with mine is that I opted for a sleek top, so if I am using it slanted things would slide off. I put on rubber bumpers to catch sketch pads, and have a couple little trays with rubber on the bottom to hold my tools. It's awesome.

have you looked on Craigslist?

craiglist, ebay, garage sales, arts and crafts stores when they are having a sale. there is a website, i think it is equip.bid.com, I have heard commercials for it on the radio and they have tons of different kinds of stuff on there, usually big machinery from closed down restaurants, but sometimes from closed schools or lots of other things, it is worth a shot!

Ikea has fairly inexpensive furniture and lamps.

I was just looking on Craigslist yesterday for a new desk and there were so many drafting tables listed. No clue if your area is the same as mine with lots of drafting tables - but don't forget to check Craigslist in the furniture section!
