Hi Moms,
I'm looking for some suggestions for great chapter books for my daughter. She's in first grade, reading at second grade level. She's already polished off the Mercy Watson/Romona & Beezus/Amelia Bedelia series books. We just started in on our first Nancy Drew book that we read together at night, but we're looking for new ideas for her to read on her own.

Thanks!

Roald Dahl books are pretty good too. BFG (my favorite), Fantastic Mr Fox, James and Giant Peach,.... There are a lot of good books out there, but I know it's will get harder to find books that are at the right reading level but age-appropriate content. Good luck and happy reading!

I homeschool and one of my favorite kids reading resources is the curriculum company www.sonlight.com
They are really big on using great reading books as part of every curriculum. You can actually go on their website and look at the lists of books they use for different reading levels. We have never been disappointed with any book we have read that they use. I have bought several curriculum packages from them, but I also sometimes just look at the book lists if I am looking for a book for one of my kids that is based on a certain topic, or on a particular reading level. And then I order it online thru the public library or try to find it used. Many of the books are Newberry award winners so they are not that hard to find used.

I noticed it says you are from Mission Viejo. I know this is not super close, but it's not ridiculously far away either. There are two used book stores owned by the same guy, they are called Piccolo. One is at the Howard Hughes Center, just north of LAX. The other is at the Pike in downtown Long Beach (next to the convention center). They are well worth your drive. They have a million used books it seems, and every book is $1, that's it. I have taken my children's book lists in there, and found lots of the books for $1, instead of paying a premium to buy them new.

Another good book resource is a book called Honey for a child's heart by Gladys Hunt. I know it seems strange to read a book about good books, but the book lists in there are invaluable, and it also talks about why we should be reading these good books to our kids, because they are honey for a child's heart :)

Lastly, my kids loved the Bobbsey Twins books. They are very family friendly mystery books from the 1950's I believe. My mom read them, I read them, and I'm so thankful I saved them for my kids to read. I don't think you can buy them new, but I have looked on the Los Angeles public library system, and you can order the ones they have on interlibrary loan. I can't say enough good things about the Bobbsey Twin books, all kids love them! Make sure you are getting the original hardcover series and not the newer paperback series that they tried making in the 1980's as easy readers. Totally not the same.

YES, my son is in the same situation...I am trying to get him to read on his own and our new find is the Cam Jansen books by David Adler, the main character Cam is a young girl with a photographic memory and she uses it to solve mysteries. There are about 20 of those books, also, the entire Magic Tree House series of books he loves. Also about 2 kids that find a tree house that takes them on adventures...He also asked me to check out "Flat Stanley" books for him...Flat Stanley goes on adventures ~ hope this helps.
Blessings,
M.

Yay for young readers!

My son's favorites, by far, have been Magic Tree House (Mary Pope Osborne) and Secrets of Droon (Tony Abbott). He's also enjoyed the Ralph/Motorcycle (Beverly Clearly), Oliver Moon, and Franny K. Stein series (don't recall the authors of the last 2 offhand).

These all might be one drop easier than what your daughter has been reading: She might also enjoy the Little House books (Laura Ingalls Wilder), E.B. White's books, the Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis), and Pippi Longstocking (Astrid Lindgren).

My daughter sounds just like yours. We have started reading the Rainbow Fairy series. Barnes and Noble has them. The first ones in the series are: Ruby the Rainbow Fairy, Amber, etc. doing all of the colors. Then there are also series within that series - Athletic Fairies, Jewel Fairies, etc. We read at least 1 chapter a night (4-10 pages). I still have to help her with a word here and there, but she can read or sound out most of it. That tells me it's just right for her.

Magic Tree House, A-Z Mysteries, Little House on the Prairie, Pippi Longstocking. I also would ask her teacher because she's the one that is working with her, and she probably has a lending library of age appropriate books.

Good luck and enjoy!
