Chapped Lips - La Mesa,CA

My two year old has severely chapped lips. It is really only the bottom one but it spreads almost all the way down to his chin. It is really red and it has started cracking and bleeding. He rubs it all the time and sucks on it so it makes it so much worse. I have tried keeping chapstick on it but he rubs it off most of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to help it go away?

What can I do next?

Try using ABREVA. I know that it supposed to be used for cold sores but I use it on my son's lip and it works great, within a few days of getting it, it started healing right a way. And the good thing is, that once you put it on, rub it into the skin, he can't rub it off. It's a little more expensive down here, but it's worth it!
**Good luck, M.E.

My son licks his bottom lip and a little below and it gets really red and dry. A doctor suggested we use hydrocortisone cream on it (Aveeno makes one) daily for a few days to a week (but no longer than a week). It went away. Whenever it comes back we just do it again. Hope that helps.

My son had the same problem last summer. He kept licking them and it got worse and worse. I tried the chapstick thing too and he'd wipe it off, causing more friction and more chapping. I would wait till he was sound asleep and I'd cover his lips with aquaphor. It works better and stays on longer. Eventually they will get better.

You already got some great ideas, but for my son I went to the Clinique counter and got "all about Lips" I use it for myself. It's amazing. I would put something like Aquaphor over that. I use the Blistex Moisture (the blue tube) as well. Don't get any of the other Blistex ones. They don't work.

T.,
The key is to put the moisturizer on when he's not aware of it - that means - when he's asleep! Don't even try the stuff when he's awake - it feels heavy on their skin and it's natural for them to want it off. The best thing that you can put on there is a cortizone creme with a heavy moisturizer over it. Like Eucerin creme, or Aquaphore. Even vaseline will help keep the moisture in. The cortizone will help heal the skin, but you don't want him licking that off, so that's why you do it at night, while he's asleep. Good luck.

I don't know where they carry this stuff but I found out about it in Sacramento. It's called bag balm. It comes in a square green container. It was originally made for chapped cow teat. I had tried everything including prescription creams for my newborn infants rash but nothing let it heal. This stuff works practically overnight. It kind of looks like vaseline but it I don't think it is. Hope this might help. Oh I also read below about the allergy thing. My husband had some symtoms like that and it turned out it was the sodium whatever in toothpaste. He used Tom's natural toothpaste after that. Wierd.

Hi,
One of my sons gets this because when his lips are chapped, he rubs them. It makes a circle of red all around his mouth (he looks like the Joker). I took him to the pediatrician and he told me 2 things. Rubbing and licking them makes it worse and second he gave told me that my son was most likely allergic to 2 products ofter used in lip balm (palm oil and another thing I cant remember), so he told me to get one from LaRoche Posay called Ceraclip (these are French products, I live in France). He also gave me a local cortisone cream that he uses just once a day when he gets chapped lips. This makes them heal really quickly and then he uses the special lip balm just to keep them from getting too chapped.
Hope this helps.

Hello T.-
If this is a constant issue you struggle with, I suggest you have your Pediatrician check to make sure it isn't Hepres Simplex. My oldest son had this and there are both prescription & over the counter remedies. It name sounds soooo much worse than it really is. I at 1st refused to believe an 18 month old could have such a thing. Then my Doctor asked me "Do you think kids his age have Chicken Pox"?...I said "YES"...well guess what it is related to Chicken Pox it is a strain of the virus. My son has (now in early his 20's) breakouts on occasion but usually it stems from extreme heat/cold or if he is dealing with stress. This is controllable, it just takes patience. Don't forget lip balm with sun screen is a must whenever your child is outdoors.
Best o Luck.

Does your son drink enough water? That could be helpful.
Petroleum or balms with mineral oil sometimes can make it worse for my little girl.
She has the same problem in the winter time, since she tends to drink less water this time of year.

Hi T.:

You may want to explore the reason his lip is chapped. Often times dry, cracked skin is an outward sign of contact with an allergen. You may want to visit NAET.com, order and read the book "Say Good-Bye to Children's Allergies." This will help you understand how the body perceives allergens and what you can do to help your son.

If you decide your son does have allergies, you can find an NAET certified doctor through the website. I (and 2 of my grand children) go to Dr. David Karaba in Fullerton and absolutely love him. His phone number is ###-###-####.

One of the wonderful things about NAET is that for children or the infirm, they can be treated through a surrogate, i.e., you. Here is the description paragraph from the book information.

Hi T..
It's hard to keep lips moist in this really dry weather. My son had the same problem - and then we started to use Mary Kay Lip Balm. It is not a chapstick. Chapstick is made with a wax that seals the lip but never penetrates the lip to heal from within. This lip balm works in a few hours and will clear his lip up right away. I use it in the morning when we are running errands and in the evening after bath. I don't battle with his chapped lips any more.
Let me know if you would like me to send you some.

I keep it on her, but since she doesnt like the tingle (peppermint) feeling I try and put it on at night either as she lies down or after she is asleep. It really works well.

believe it or not, but try lansinoh cream (the breastfeeding cream). it is a skin protectant. try to keep a layer of it on throughout the day. especially when going outside. putting it on at night is helpful so that he is less likely to lick it off. you should see it start to clear up in just a day and eventually be healed. if you notice it starting to get red again, put the cream on in the early stage.

My son had the same problem, he was 3 tho. First I explained it to him, that the licking made it worse and if he wanted to get better he had to stop. I showed it to him in the mirror. Everytime I caught him doing it I reminded him. Then at night I put aquaphor on him, just after bathtime. You may have to wait unitl your little guy is sound asleep before applying it as he may mess with it and rub it off. It does stain bedding, so be aware. If you dont have aquaphor, I find regular vasaline works too. The humidity may be really low in your house, especially in winter with the heater on. Winter is the worst for dry sensitive skin. Research ways to raise the humidity in you house/his room. Good luck!

We use A&D ointment (commonly used on bottoms) for under chapped noses and it's amazing. In one night, it is remarkably better. Also for that lower lip, my son finally let us use cherry flavored chapstick. He is now 3 and puts it on his own lips. We have a stick in the car, by his bed, in my purse...We have also used vit. E oil (without fragrance) on chapped skin/excema. It doesn't sting. And to apply, you have to rub it in a bit, so all the rubbing in the world won't get ALL of it off. Good luck.

Hi! My son used to get chapped all around his mouth in the winter too (although not as bad as your son). What I did was put Aquaphor (available at Target, CVS, Rite Aid, etc.) on the whole area and kept reapplying as much as possible during the day. Then at night after he fell asleep, I would put a real thick layer on the area and it always looked better in the morning.

He is now 5, so he better understands why it's important to keep the area dry. I don't need to use the Aquaphor anymore, but I still keep moisturizing his whole face in the winter with a great balm I found called "Sweet Cheeks" made by Dimplekins (available online). That has worked wonderfully, and it's chemical free.

Good luck!

I know of some wonderful products that you may want to look in to. And they have a skin care line specifically for babies (I use for my kids). Arbonne products are completely natural and safe and work several layers deep into the skin to repair. Most of the store brands contain petroleum which actually seals off the skin and doesn't allow anything to absorb. With that said, if you need quick releif today, I have used Auqaphor (found at any grocer store or drug store). I realize this is a petroleum/vaseline based product, but it works great overnight because it does seal off the skin from licking and allows the skin to do some healing while they sleep. I wouldn't use it on a regular basis because it doesn't truly help the skin, it just protects it by sealing off moisture. I would use it as an emergency remedy to get some of the chapped redness and irritation cleared up.

Give him some flaxseed oil. Add just a little bit in a healthy smoothy. I don't prefer the fish oil because the taste can linger all day. But the flaxseed oil will help. Make a smoothy of milk, yogurt, froz berries, a tbsp of oats and a little flaxseed oil. Yumm. Also, Arbonne has a wonderful lipbalm that has sunscreen in it. It's only $8 and it works wonders on my 4-yr-old who also has very dry & chapped lips. (www.youlookgr8.myarbonne.com) The Vaseline is petroleum based and does not get absorbed into the skin. It just sits on the skin like saran wrap.

I would look at the environment (Are you in a dry climate?), treating it topically, helping redirect him to another habit, and internal causes (food or contact sensitivities). Maybe run a humidifier in the house or keep a pot of water simmering. Give him something else to chew on or fiddle with. Start giving him more essential fatty acides (omega 3s) which are fish oil. There are many chewable capsules for kids, flavored liquid that you can put in a shot of orange juice, even flavored packets that kids just eat. Coromega makes the packets that supposedly taste like orange slushy, and I believe it's Nordic Naturals that makes the chewable capsules. My oldest son gets chapped, cracked, bleeding knuckles during dry winter unless he takes his cod liver oil (a tsp of the liquid in a little glass of OJ). He loves it! As you treat the symptoms, watch and see if it correlates to any foods. "Is This Your Child?" is a great comprehensive book on food insensitivities.

Stay away from products that have mineral oil (petrolatum) as it will not penetrate his skin. Mineral Oil acts as an occlusive barrier and is made with petroleum. We also have a chapstick that has spf 15 and my kids get really chapped lips if I do not use this chapstick on them. Something really soothing like aloe vera juice might help too. Calendula is great for healing skin, so is beeswax and maybe he won't be able to suck it off as easily. There is a wonder skin healer called Tamanu oil that you can get at Jimbos, Whole Foods and other health food stores. More vitamin E might help as well.

Please beware of synthetic treatments like carmex and vasoline that contain petroleum as well as other remedies containing toxic drugs. They are much too harsh for children, much less adults. If it turns out to be a bacterial infection then there are natural ways to clear that up too. Tea tree oil, for instance.

Hope it clears up soon!

In Canada as a child, during the winter our feet and hands would crack and bleed. Lanolin was the only stuff that worked. I'd put it on at bedtime. We would cover the area with plastic wrap, then put on socks or gloves. Clearly, that's not an option with the lips and chin, but it still should work.

When he goes to sleep try putting Bag Balm (Cow Utter Cream)on the chapped area if he rubs it off when awake. You can buy it at CVS, Wallgreens, etc. It used to come in a green square can. I don't know if the packaging is the same now or not. A can lasts a very long time. This cures bed sores and I used it on my son when he was little and he chapped really bad around the mouth but he didn't rub it off because it hurt too much to rub it off. Good Luck.

Try Aquaphor it is made by Eucerine and it works on everything. I have 4 kids and i use it on chapped lips, diaper rashes, that red chin that teething babies get, even little scratches. It really helps and it is available over the counter at any drugstore or even Target. Good luck!

Aquaphor by Eucerin. It's the only thing I have found that heals overnight. My son's lips bleed too. And this stuff is the absolute best!! Target or CVS with the moisturizers.

My daughter did that when she was younger. The doctor recommended the Eucerin Aquaphor cream. It is really thick so hard to rub off. It worked great. You can get it at any drug store.

Check out www.greencradle.com It is a website for an INCREDIBLE organic pharmacy that is on Ventura in Studio City. Better Yet- go in an talk to them. They are SOOOOO knowledgable and incredibly nice. I use something called eczasalve on my daughter's face, but I don't know if it could go on her lips. It is amazing stuff! It's organic but I would certainly do my research first!

Good Luck,

I have been using a medicine off and on since I was a little girl. I had severely chapped lips before using it and haven't ever since. This medicine clears it up within a few days and it's not very strong, so it's not harmful. It's called "alclometasone dipropionate ointment .05%". Ask your doc to write you a perscription.

Hi, T. -

I would suggest something softer for his chin. My favorite lotion is Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. It's pricey, but well worth it for anyone with sensitive skin. It will penetrate immediately and heal the skin better than ChapStick. Burt's Bees Lip Balm for his lips might work well, too.

Best of luck!

Hi T.,

My daughter and I have very sensitive skin. She's 9mo old and has had a difficult time adjusting to the change in temp. Her skin has been breaking out pretty bad and she'll have these breaks in her skin around the mouth and her eyes from all the rubbing she does. I've put Aquaphor on her face at night right after her bath. It is a simple and easy way to heal the skin in children as well as in adults. Just put a little on your fingers and put it on your babies face. He'll be shiny at first but it absorbs into the skin rather quickly. My pediatrician recommended it when she first started having her breakouts when she was 3 months old. I had the flu about a month ago and ran a temp for 2 days when all was said and done my nose and my lips were raw! My lips were bleeding from being soo dry and my nose was just raw from all of the tissue action. I used the aquaphor for 2 days and saw immediate relief! Try it and let me know how it goes. Good Luck.

Hi! My daughter had really chapped lips and had the redness (no cracking/bleeding) while on the mainland over the holidays. I would put vaseline or Eucerine creme on it at night after tucking her in, or around 10pm when I checked on her. She would always lick it off too, so I decided the treatment time would be at night while she slept. It took about 2 weeks or so for it to go away completely. Hope this helps!

What your son is experiencing may be an allergy. Before trying anything you may want to have him tested. The least invasive technique is NAET which many chiropractors and acupuncturists do. If it turns out to be only chapped lips try using a natural lip balm as chapstick has petroleum in it which ends up drying the lips out even more.

Take him to a dermatologist. When my on was 6 and 7 he suffered from this. Known as "lip lickers dermatitis". Vicious cycle. He keeps sucking and locking because it is itchy and irritated which makes it worse. She prescribed a topical steroid cream which cleared it up like magic. I was sorry he suffered for a year before taking more serious action.

Poor little guy. It sounds like skin irritation thats is worsen because of the skin barrier is already broken and unable to heal well. I say lather on aquaphor generously. He might need an ointment (vs. cream) of Hydrocortisone to help with itching an inflammation too--the ointment is stickier but will keep the skin from loosing water--causing more drying. Talk to your Provider to get a prescription of hydrocortisone and some "anti-itch" medication. If you are consistent with the aquaphor and hydrocortisone--it should heal in about 2 weeks. My daughter has the same thing but on her arms. Its so sad to see little ones digging away at the site that causing so much itching!

Hi T., I recently read that severely chapped lips can be caused by dehydration as the lips are one of the first areas to show the effects of not taking in enough fluids. This may not be the cause of your sons chapped lips but I figure it doesn't hurt to pass the information along. Hope you and your son gets some relief from this soon.

He could be allergic to the chapstick that you're using making it worse.
I recommend trying Carmex and see if it improves anything. Keep the area clean with water a few times a day and then apply the Carmex.
I am allergic to most lip balms on the market and what's happening to your son is what happens to me. It just makes things worse. I can only use Carmex and Burt's Bees.
You might also let him chew on a wet wash cloth to keep it moist and to give him something to chew on besides his lip and chin.

Hi,
I see you already have quite a lot of responses to your request, but I have used something called Renew lotion on all of my children, and it works so well! It's not greasy like vaseline and bag balm, it's got no harmful ingredients that the baby might swallow. I'm very picky about what I use on my children, and after lots of product testing (as I called it), Renew is the best thing I've ever used. I believe it was developed to compete with Eucerin, a lotion for people with excema and other skin problems. It's very gentle, and I use it on diaper rashes, as a baby lotion, and on my own skin. I don't know where you can get it in a store, I purchase it through my friend who has a bunch of other wonderful products. Her name is Sarah and her e-mail address is ____@____.com if you would like to try it.

My gets a rash around his mouth when he has a cold because he keeps licking his lips. I use Arbonne baby procucts and the Before Sun lip balm with spf30 on him. These are pediatrician approved and don't contain mineral oil which is a barrier and doesn't allow the good ingredients to penetrate. Take a look at my website, T..myarbonne.com. You can see the ingredients there.

Try putting neosporin in his lips when he is asleep. It will help to moisturize as well as heal the dry skin. If he is asleep, then he likely won't rub it off.

When this has happened with my son (who HATES any kind of lotions or oils), I have diligently slathered him up while he's sleeping. I know it isn't ideal, but it works. Little by little we're working on getting him to tolerate that stuff, but when he's so chapped like that I feel like I just have to do what works.

You also might want to take note of what you're using on him because certain lip balms (like Chap Stick and Carmex) actually make the problem worse (so you'll use more!). Calendula oil is really great, as is Vitamin E oil, and vitamin E oil doesn't rub off so easily and tastes TERRIBLE! ;)

hi, i have a 6 year old daughter that always has a chapped lip on the bottom also, i have been told by the doctor that when a child licks there lips a lot it usually means they are dehydrated, needless to say we drink a lot of fluids and use a lot of carmex (it doesn't taste too good so she's less apt to lick it) it really seems to work the best, but the winter season really kicks out bootie no matter what we do. good luck

Dear T.,
I have used the lanolin(for cracked nipples when breast feeding). It works well because it sticks. The brand I have is Lansinoh and is in the baby bottle/nursing pad section of the store. Neither I nor my kids have had a problem with it, but my little sister is sensitive to lanolin so try on a small section first.

Hi T.,

I have two things in mind that can and should help your little one.

1. Buy the Vitamin E Capsules, cut one open and put some Vitamin E on his cracked lip(s).

2. Get the Satin Lip Balm from Mary Kay and apply this a few times a day. I have those in stock, so could ship immediately. You can order it over my secure web site.

Let me know which one worked better.

I wouldn't use chapstick or Vaseline, as they contain petroleum, which can cause cancer. The lip balm doesn't have any of those ingredients, hence, is safe!

Wishing you and your little one speedy healing.

Lovingly,
D.

My son has been having severe chapped lips since I started him on the Pulmicort. I've been using vaseline on his lips when he goes to bed and throughout the day. Put Neosporin on at night after he goes to sleep and any time he goes down for a nap. The Neosporin will help heal the chapped skin but you will still need to keep some sort of chapstick on during the day...Neosporin tastes bad, so if he won't fight you, try putting it on during the day also.
Good Luck!

try to keep neosporin on it which is more effective than chapstick for healing the lips and skin because it has antibacterial properties. the mouth area is loaded w/ bacteria, so that's probably why it's spread down to his chin. since neosporin does not taste good, like chapstick does, maybe he won't lick it all the way off because it's sorta bitter tasting. if it turns out he still either licks it or wipes it off, then best you can do is coat it on him after he falls asleep (during naps & at bedtime). at night you can apply several coatings. you will see dramatic healing by morning time.
